US launches new air strikes on ISIS militants in Iraq

ANI London

The United States military has reportedly admitted to launching four air strikes on the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants in northern Iraq to defend civilians.

Washington said in a statement that jet fighters and drones had destroyed armoured carriers and a truck that was attacking civilians from the Yazidi sect, reported the BBC.

Thousands of civilians have been displaced ever since the ISIS seized control of the town of Sinjar a week ago.

This is the first time that the U.S. has involved itself directly in a military operation in Iraq since the withdrawal of its forces from the state in late 2011.

This was the third round of US drone attacks on Iraq after they were authorized by President Barack Obama.
