A senior police officer today said only 1.30 per cent of the candidates who appeared in the recruitment test of Punjab police tested positive for drugs.

Additional Director General (ADG) Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota, who is also the Chairman of Central Recruitment Board, said a total of 6,23,507 candidates were found eligible for the 7,416 posts for which applications were invited.

He said till August 10, 1,67,781 candidates had undergone the Substance Abuse Test (SAT) and the process was going on.

"The response is most encouraging and indicative of the general health and stamina of Punjabis. A total of 1,64,424 (98 per cent) candidates have cleared SAT," he added.

Sahota said a mere 1.30 per cent (2,185) of the candidates tested positive for drugs with another 0.65 per cent (1,090) testing positive for performance enhancing drugs.

He said the number of candidates disqualified on the basis of SAT results was only 3,275 (1.95 per cent). Of them, 1,090 had tested positive for amphetamine, a performance enhancing drug which did not belong to the 'serious' or 'life-threatening' category.

"Candidates found to have been under the influence of amphetamine, a performance enhancing drug, are permitted to reappear in the recruitment test after a gap of seven days," said Sahota.
