The trading volume of renewable energy certificates jumped to more than 2.57 lakh this month on increased purchases by power distribution companies on the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX).
The volume in December was a steep rise from 1,04,726 registered on the exchange in November.
At this month's session held on December 26, a total of 2,57,615 renewable energy certificates (RECs) were traded, with 2,50,722 non-solar and 6,893 solar RECs.

"The total trade volume increased by about 146 per cent as compared to last month owing to the increased buying by the distribution companies," the IEX said in a statement.
The certificates are used as instruments to help entities meet the Renewable Purchase Obligation set by states. One REC is equivalent to 1 MWh of energy generated from renewable sources.
According to the exchange, there were buy bids for 6,893 RECs in the solar segment compared with 77,180 sell bids. These certificates were cleared at a price of Rs 9,300 each.
In the non-solar segment, there were buy bids for 2,50,722 RECs compared with 27,12,444 sell bids and these were sold at Rs 1,500 apiece.
There were 696 participants in the latest trading session, with 563 in the non-solar segment and the remainder in the solar segment.
