The Bharatiya Janata Party-led Union government is trying to control states ruled by other parties through the Raj Bhawan (governor), which is not in the interest of the country and its democracy, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said on Saturday. He was answering a query on the row between Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit and the Bhagwant Mann government over delay in giving assent to some bills passed in the Assembly in the northern state. "The Chief Justice of India has made a very serious comment (on the Punjab issue). Raj Bhawan has been trying to misuse its powers. Be it Punjab or Tamil Nadu, or even in Chhattisgarh, a dozen bills are stuck at Raj Bhawan," Baghel told reporters. On Friday, the Supreme Court did some tough talking over the governors of Punjab and Tamil Nadu (Purohit and RN Ravi) delaying assent to bills passed by the state legislatures, cautioning the Raj Bhawan occupant in Chandigarh against "playing with fire" and observing his counterpart in ...
The police sub-inspector accused of raping a minor girl in Rajasthan's Dausa district has been arrested and a case registered against him under relevant sections, including POCSO Act and the SC/ST Act, officials said on Saturday. The police officer was detained and suspended on Friday. The opposition BJP attacked the Congress government in the state over law and order after the case surfaced, alleging that while the Centre believes in "beti bachao", the Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot-led dispensation in Rajasthan stands for "rapists bachao". Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra condemned the incident, saying it brings shame to the entire society, and instructed Director General of Police Umesh Mishra to take strict action in the case. The minor was allegedly lured into a room by Sub-Inspector Bhupendra Singh and raped on Friday afternoon, police said, adding that Singh was suspended on Friday itself and a report of his misconduct was sent to the IGP of Jaipur Rural for further action. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh on Saturday said the party is seeking mandate based on the works done by its government in Rajasthan in the last five years, whereas the BJP's issues are polarisation and ED and CBI. He alleged the BJP has no strategy other than this and the prime minister is raising allegations against Rajasthan government out of fear. He termed the allegations "totally baseless". Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his public meeting in Udaipur had accused the Congress government of sympathising with terrorists. "Rajasthan has become a model state in the last five years and the prime minister is afraid and troubled by it. Since the PM is not left with any other issue, ED and CBI is sent. And again and again the PM and their associates speak the language of polarisation," Ramesh told reporters at a press conference in Jaipur. He said that BJP cannot talk about schemes of the Congress government as they are not in a situation to comment on it. "They are afr

Newly appointed Karnataka BJP president B Y Vijayendra on Saturday said his party workers will not back off from agitations against the ruling Congress and will give a befitting response to the ruling party in the state in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. He also said he would strive to strengthen the party right from the booth level. The BJP on Friday had appointed Vijayendra, the younger son of veteran leader and former Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, as its state unit president. He was until now the state vice-president of the party. "There is no example of BJP workers backing off from any struggle or agitation. Campaigning for the saffron party ahead of the November 17 assembly polls, he also accused Congress leaders of forgetting election promises after coming to power. "At present, there is a double engine BJP government in Madhya Pradesh (with BJP ruling in the state and at the Centre), but if the Congress comes to power by a small mistake, the train of development will stop, because the engine of the Narendra Modi government will try to take this train forward on the path of progress, and (Kamal) Nath government's engine will pull it backwards," Fadnavis said at a rally in Indore-3 constituency. . In a post on X, the TMC MP said, "Proud to go down in parliamentary history as 1st person to be unethically expelled by Ethics Comm whose mandate doesn't include expulsion. 1st expel & THEN ask govt to ask CBI to find evidence. Kangaroo court, monkey business from start to finish". "Never Waste a Good Crisis they say... - this just helped me double my 2024 winning margin," Moitra said. The Ethics Committee on Thursday recommended Moitra's expulsion, capping a fortnight of actions that included the deposition of three people over three sittings.
