Hitting out at the government, the Congress on Friday said concerns on inflation continue to be serious and claimed that crores of families were facing "true hardships" from "unabated increase" in prices of essential commodities. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh's attack on the government came after the Reserve Bank of India on Friday decided to keep the policy rate unchanged for the fourth time in a row. In a post on X, Ramesh said, "The RBI has maintained the Repo Rate the interest rate it charges for borrowings by commercial banks from it at 6.5%. This simply means that concerns on inflation continue to be serious." "For 47 months, the Consumer Price Index(CPI) has remained well over the RBI's own medium-term target of 4%. In August 2023, the CPI stood at 6.83%," the Congress general secretary in-charge communications said. "This of course masks the true hardships being faced by crores upon crores of families from unabated increase in prices of essential commodities,"

Congress' top decision making body CWC will meet on October 9 here to deliberate on the current political situation, caste census and further firm up the strategy for the upcoming assembly elections in five states. The party is seeking to retain power in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, while hoping to wrest power from the BJP in Madhya Pradesh, BRS in Telangana and the Mizo National Front (MNF) in Mizoram. The meeting is likely to have a discussion on the caste census. The Congress has made a strong pitch for the caste census and has raised the demand for giving rights on the basis of population with emphasis on other backward classes (OBCs). Congress' top decision making body CWC will meet on October 9 here to deliberate on the current political situation and further firm up the strategy for the upcoming round of state polls, sources said on Thursday. The meeting comes just over three weeks after the first meeting of the reconstituted Congress Working Committee (CWC) was held in Hyderabad on September 16 to evolve a strategy for the upcoming assembly polls in five states -- Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram -- and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Cong cites RBI data to claim most Indians facing extreme financial distress

The Congress on Thursday alleged that a vast majority of Indian families are facing "extreme levels of Modi-made economic distress" with rise in inflation and debt and a decline in household savings. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh shared an article on X which claimed that the Reserve Bank of India's recently released data on household financial assets and liabilities "paints a disquieting picture of a contraction in savings, in the context of a slowdown in incomes." In his post, Ramesh said, "Some fresh and concerning analysis coming out of the RBI's data: In addition to household savings rates now at historic lows, income growth adjusted for inflation over the past four years is the slowest in the past 40 years!"
