A 40-year-old woman died in a major fire at a building in East Delhi's Shakarpur on Tuesday while 26 people were rescued, officials said here. They said the fire started in its parking area in the early hours of the day and engulfed the entire structure. A woman died in the fire while 26 people, along with two pets, were rescued by the Delhi Fire Service, the officials said, adding that some people jumped off the windows to save themselves. All of them were rushed to a hospital, they said. "We got a fire call at about 1.05 am... We immediately pressed three fire engines to service. Later, five more fire engines were rushed to the spot. The matter was informed to the police immediately," an official of the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) said.

A total of 1,175 people lost their lives in 2023 till October 31 this year in 1,141 accidents that were classified as "fatal," police said on Monday. Fatal accidents in the national capital reduced by more than four per cent this year till October 31 and the number of deaths decreased by more than three per cent as compared to the corresponding period in 2022, police said. According to the data shared by police, a total of 4,646 fatal accidents took place in 2022 till October 31. Out of them, 1,197 were fatal accidents, which took 1,225 lives. This year, there were 4,803 reported accidents, with 1,141 classified as fatal and 1,175 people losing their lives in them. "In 2023, there was a 4.74 per cent reduction in the total number of fatal accidents, accompanied by a 3.27 per cent decrease in the number of persons killed compared to previous year," police said. Delhi recorded its best air quality on Diwali day in eight years on Sunday, though pollution levels may rise due to burning of firecrackers and low night temperatures. Delhiites experienced clear skies and abundant sunshine and the city's 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 218 at 4 pm, the best in at least three weeks. Delhi recorded an AQI of 312 on Diwali last year, 382 in 2021, 414 in 2020, 337 in 2019, 281 in 2018, 319 in 2017 and 431 in 2016, according to Central Pollution Control Board data. An AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', 401 and 450 'severe' and above 450 'severe plus'. Delhi Vigilance Minister Atishi on Saturday initiated an inquiry into a complaint against Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar and summoned all the files on Bamnoli land acquisition for further action, officials said. The complaint alleged that the chief secretary's son was employed by a relative of a landowner, who received an enhanced compensation for land acquired for a road project, official sources said on Friday. Atishi directed the divisional commissioner and vigilance director to provide all the files related to Bamnoli land acquisition to her by 7 pm on Saturday, the officials said. Sources said the Vigilance Directorate, in reply to a note from the minister, has cited various guidelines, including those from the Vigilance Manual of 2021, and pointed out that she has no authority to inquire into the matter, which is already being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, currently in Tihar jail, met his ailing wife on Saturday after permission from a city court. Sisodia, who is in jail in connection with the alleged liquor scam case, was allowed to meet his wife for six hours between 10 am and 4 pm. Accompanied by police personnel, Sisodia reached his home on Mathura Road in a prison van at around 10 am and returned to the jail after the meeting time lapsed. The AIIMS Delhi administration has announced a comprehensive plan to regulate the entry of commercial passenger vehicles into the hospital campus over reports that auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers are exploiting unsuspecting patients and their attendants. The Enforcement Directorate has arrested three people as part of a money laundering investigation against AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan linked to alleged irregularities in recruitment of staff for the Delhi Waqf Board, official sources said Saturday. The agency had last month raided the premises of the 49-year-old legislator who represents the Okhla constituency in the Delhi assembly. Three people have been taken into custody under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the sources said. Their identities were not immediately known. The agency had alleged that Khan acquired "huge proceeds of crime" in cash from illegal recruitment of staff in the Delhi Waqf Board and invested these for purchasing immovable assets in the name of his associates. The Delhi High Court has directed the authorities here to ensure that there are no illegal hawkers or vendors in Connaught Place. In a hearing held on Friday, a bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan directed the Delhi Police and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) to strictly implement its 2021 order which asserted that there has to be zero tolerance towards all unauthorised hawkers. The bench, also comprising Justice Mini Pushkarna, observed that the situation which arose in Nehru Market in 2021 -- when fire tenders could not access a building where a fire broke out -- cannot happen again. With the death of five more people, the toll in a suspected case of poisoning due to the consumption of spurious liquor has climbed to 12 in Haryana, officials said on Friday. While 10 people have died in Yamunanagar district, two deaths were reported from neighbouring Ambala, they added. Opposition Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) have slammed the Manohar Lal Khattar government over the deaths and said it has failed to learn lessons from such incidents in the past. Three more deaths were reported from Yamunanagar on Friday, the officials said. The deaths have so far taken place in Mandebari, Panjeto Ka Majra, Phoosgarh and Saran villages of Yamunanagar. Police said the two men who died in Ambala on Thursday were migrant labourers from Uttar Pradesh. They had consumed the suspected spurious liquor, which was manufactured illegally in Ambala district. The two men were living in a rented house in a village in Ambala and working at a factory here.
President Droupadi Murmu is set to receive a new voter identification card as the process to change her address to Delhi has begun, officials said on Friday. The address in her current voter ID card is of Mayurbhanj, Odisha, a senior official of the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) Office said. CEO P Krishnamurthy on Friday visited the Rashtrapati Bhavan to facilitate her in "changing her voter ID address" to Delhi, the officials said. "In an exemplary display of democratic participation, the Hon'ble president filled out Form-8 to initiate the address update process," the CEO Office said in a statement. The president is "set to receive a new voter ID card, reflecting her updated residential address in Delhi," the statement said. A Delhi court on Friday extended till November 24 the judicial custody of AAP leader Sanjay Singh, arrested in a money laundering case related to the alleged Delhi excise scam. Special Judge M K Nagpal also allowed Singh to sign some documents related to development work as a Member of Parliament. The judge also directed the authorities concerned to produce him before a court in Punjab after it was informed that a production warrant had been received from a court in Amritsar, Punjab, in a case there. The anti-money laundering agency had arrested Singh on October 4. The Union Health Ministry has asked Delhi and its neighbouring states to make necessary healthcare preparations to deal with any rush of patients triggered by poor air quality that may worsen in the upcoming festive season. In a letter to the health departments of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan this week, Director General of Health Services Atul Goel said air pollution not only accounts for acute illnesses but also precipitates exacerbation of chronic illnesses of respiratory, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular systems. "The consequences are graver for vulnerable population such as children, pregnant women, older people, those with pre-existing illnesses, and those exposed due to their occupations such as those involved in traffic policing and municipality work, etc.," Dr Goel said and urged the state authorities for necessary healthcare preparedness.
