Blast in Sweden tears through 2 apartment buildings

Swedish police say a blast ripped through two adjacent apartment buildings in a southern city. It isn't immediately clear if there are casualties. The explosion has blown out windows and destroyed balconies in the buildings in central Linkoping, about 175 kilometers (110 miles) southwest of Stockholm. One of the buildings had five stories, while the other had four floors. Police said a bomb squad had been deployed to the area after Friday's blast, which occurred shortly after 0700 GMT (3 a.m. EDT). The cause of the blast wasn't immediately known.

2 killed, 99 injured in Nepal storm

Two persons were killed and at least 99 others injured after a strong wind storm hit several places in Nepal's far-western Sudurpaschim province, according to a media report. The storm hit areas in the two adjoining districts of Kailali and Kanchanpur districts on Thursday, damaging hundreds of houses. Roads were blocked as trees and utility poles were uprooted. Power too was disrupted following the strong winds. The Himalayan Times reported that two of the injured have been referred to India for further treatment. Eighteen people are undergoing treatment at various health facilities in Dhangadhi in Kailali district, while others have been discharged after treatment. According to Superintendent of Police Sudip Giri, the storm lasted for nearly 40 minutes. Most of the houses with zinc sheet roofs have been destroyed, he said. Security personnel from Nepal Police, Army and Armed Police Force have been mobilised for rescue and relief operations.

Two dead, 100 injured as storm hits Nepal's Far-Western region

At least two people lost their lives and a hundred were injured after a storm hit Nepal's Kailali and Kanchanpur districts in the Far-Western Development Region on Thursday evening.While 77 people were wounded due to the storms in Kailali, 23 people have been injured in Kanchanpur, taking the total count up to a hundred."Two people are confirmed dead and over 77 are injured as the storm hit the district on Thursday evening," the Chief District Officer of Kailali district, Yagyaraj Bohara, confirmed to ANI over the phone.The dead were identified as 47-year-old Lahanu Chaudhary and Birbahadur Chaudhary, whose age is yet to be determined."We have already started an assessment of the damage caused by the storm last evening. The search and rescue operation is over now. At least 19 killed due to dust storm, lightning in UP

At least 19 persons were killed and 48 injured due to dust storm and lightning in various parts of Uttar Pradesh, the state Relief commissioner said on Friday. "While six persons died in Mainpuri, three persons each died in Etah and Kasganj and one each in one each in Moradabad, Badaun, Pilibhit, Mathura, Kannauj, Sambhal and Ghaziabad in incidents related to dust storm and lightning," official data released by the UP Relief commissioner said. Different parts of the state witnessed dust storms late on Thursday evening resulting in trees being uprooted and walls collapsing. The maximum 41 people were injured in Mainpuri district. "Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed the officials to take all necessary measures to provide relief to the affected persons. He has directed ministers incharge of concerned districts to oversee relief operations," Principal Secretary Information Awanish Awasthi said. Six killed in AP road accident

Six persons including two women died while four others were injured when their car rammed into a truck near Guravarajupalle, 20 km from here, on Friday, police said. While five people were killed on the spot, another died in the hospital, the police said, adding that the condition of two injured persons remains critical, they said. The mishap occurred at the crack of dawn when the vehicle with ten pilgrims from Rudravaram village of Achampet Mandal in Guntur district on their way to Tirumala, crashed into the stationary truck. Police suspect that the driver of the car might have dozed off behind the wheel resulting in the accident. The injured were admitted to SVRR Government hospital here, police said.

Dubai: 8 Indians killed in bus accident

Eight Indians were killed when a bus they were travelling in met with an accident in Dubai on Thursday evening.Dubai Police said that the bus carrying 31 people "overrun a traffic signal" near the Rashidiya exit on Thursday evening. Seventeen people of different nationalities were killed while five were critically injured, reported Khaleej Times.The Indian consulate in Dubai said that at least eight Indians were among dead."We are sorry to inform that as per local authorities and relatives it is so far confirmed that 8 Indians have passed away in Dubai bus accident. Consulate is in touch with relatives of some of the deceased and awaits further details for others to inform their families," the consulate tweeted.The Indians were identified as Rajagopalan, Feroz Khan Pathan, Reshma Feroz Khan Pathan, Deepak Kumar, Jamaludeen Arakkaveettil, Kiran Johnny, Vasudev and Tilakram Jawahar Thakur.

Aircraft P8I equipped with special radars, sensors airborne to search IAF AN-32

The Indian Navy on Friday pressed its Long Range Maritime Reconnaissance aircraft P8I in the ongoing search operation for the AN-32 aircraft which went missing on June 3 in Arunachal Pradesh.The aircraft P8I is airborne from INS Rajali, Arakonam, Tamil Nadu on Friday morning. Andhra Pradesh: 5 dead, 3 injured in road accident

At least five people died and three others got injured after a car hit a lorry on the highway near Duravarajupalle village in Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor district on Friday, police said.The incident took place at around 5 am.Renigunta urban police station CI, G Sivaramudu said, "A car was going from Guntur district to Tirupati. In the wee hours today, the car hit a lorry that was stopped by the roadside from behind. In the accident, five persons died on the spot. They are Vijaya Bharati (38), Prasanna (14), Chenna Kesava Reddy (12), Driver Prem Raju (35) and Ankayya (40). All belong to Rudravaram village, Achampet mandal, Guntur district. Three more persons are injured."The accident took place when the victims were travelling from Achampet to Tirupati and their car reached Duravarajupalle village, said police."Renigunta Urban police immediately rushed to the spot and admitted the injured in Ruya Hospital, Tirupati. Odisha incurred loss of over Rs 9,000cr due to Cyclone Fani

Cyclonic storm 'Fani', which made landfall in Odisha on May 3, caused a loss worth approximately Rs 9336 crores, a state government official said on Thursday.According to the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC), different departments assessed the loss to public properties to be Rs.6643.63 crore, and an amount of Rs.2692.63 crore is required for relief measures for the affected people."The total loss to the public properties and requirement of fund for relief measures has been estimated as Rs.9336 crores," read a statement issued on Thursday.In this regard, the Odisha government has sought Rs.5227.68 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) in order to meet the expenditure on the ongoing relief and restoration measures.As of now, Rs.1357.14 crore has been released by the state government to various districts and departments towards disaster response, the statement said.A thorough assessment of the situation in 20,367 villages in the aftermath of the cyclone, it was observed .

Firefighters tackle blaze at posh Indian restaurant in London

Scores of firefighters rushed to tackle a massive blaze at a posh Indian restaurant in the heart of London on Thursday evening and declared it had been brought under control a few hours later. Two-year-old falls into 150-foot-deep borewell in Punjab, rescue operation underway

A two-year-old boy fell into an over 150-foot-deep borewell in a field near his house in Punjab's Sangrur district Thursday, officials said. Fatehvir Singh fell into the unused borewell while he was playing near his house at around 4 pm, district administration officials said. The borewell was covered with a cloth and the boy accidentally stepped on it while playing. His mother tried to rescue him, but failed, they said. A National Disaster Response Force team has launched an operation to rescue the child, the officials said. Oxygen is being supplied to the child who appears to be stuck 125-foot-deep into the borewell, they said. Cyclone Fani caused loss of over Rs 9,000 crore to Odisha

Cyclone 'Fani' that ravaged Odisha's coastal districts and killed 64 people last month caused a total loss of Rs 9,336.26 crore, a senior official said Thursday. While the calamity caused a loss of Rs 6,643,63 to public properties, Rs 2,692.63 crore is required for relief measures for the affected people, he said. "The total loss to public properties and requirement of funds for relief measures have been estimated at Rs 9,336.26 crore," Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) B P Sethi said. The final figure was arrived at after village to village assessment was made through various teams constituted by the district collectors following the cyclone, he said. "The state government is seeking an assistance of Rs 5,227.68 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) in order to meet the expenditure on the ongoing relief and restoration measure," the SRC said.
