Last week's videotaped encounter at the Lincoln Memorial left many wondering about the state of reasoned political discourse in the country, or if it exists at all in a hyperpartisan era of red "Make America Great Again" hats versus pink women's march caps. In a video from January 18, a group of boys from Kentucky's Covington Catholic High School, a Native American activist and a cluster of Black Hebrew Israelites faced off in an uncomfortable confrontation that spread online and in the media. It has prompted national debate about both civility in politics, the seeming lack of tolerance for those of differing political beliefs and how both are influencing the nation's youth. That debate sounded all-too-familiar to Ohio social studies teacher Judy Galasso, who has taught a class on political radicalism for three decades now. "If someone's yelling things at you, if you're presented with groups that you disagree with, my hope is that we train our kids well enough that they're not going ..
The Delhi High Court has taken the authorities to task for assigning duties to schoolteachers which are "not remotely" connected to imparting education. The high court held that principals and teachers cannot be asked by municipal corporations to perform duties outside the purview of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act and rules under it. Justice C Hari Shankar set aside several notifications issued by the corporations requiring the principals and teachers to conduct household survey and participate in preparation of the Ward Education Register. The court, however, clarified that authorities are justified in seeking assistance of principals and teachers to aid in opening bank accounts of children in the school and linking them with Aadhaar cards, but the requirement cannot be treated as "mandatory" and cannot be made a basis for proceeding against them for non-rendering adequate assistance. "This court is constrained to take judicial notice of the fact ...

The sound of music fills the halls at a school in Yemen's Taez, where little Nazira al-Jaafari sits at a keyboard as a teacher takes her through the notes. "I love music," said Jaafari, a pupil at the Al-Nawras school where tutors are trying to help students temporarily forget the ongoing war. "Whenever I feel sad or uncomfortable, I play music." She has built up an eclectic repertoire, including happy birthday and cult songs by Arab icons Fairuz and Umm Kalthoum. "I just hope that Yemen will win this war," she said before exhaling deeply, then smiling and adding: "And that we can live a new life." Officials of a school in Palghar in Maharashtra have been booked for allegedly threatening a student to give positive feedback about the institution, police said Sunday. Rajya Sabha MP and Delhi University professor Manoj Jha has written to HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar urging him to bring an ordinance on reservation roster for teaching positions in higher education institutions (HEIs) during the upcoming Budget session. The UGC had announced in March that an individual department should be considered as the base unit to calculate the number of teaching posts to be reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates following an order by the Allahabad High Court in April in 2017. The HRD Ministry had filed a special leave petition against the court order which was rejected by the Supreme Court. It is clear as daylight that this formula (the new formula) is intended to steal the reservation benefits from the SC/ST/OBC teachers, Jha said in the letter written on Saturday. "If recruitments are held using this mischievous new formula it will force out SC/ST/OBC ad-hoc, temporary and contractual teachers currently teaching against these
