Police Friday caned a group of jobless teachers who tried to force their way to the state education minister's residence to press for employment, injuring four of them. The protesters wanted to submit a memorandum to Education Minister O P Soni for their appointment in government schools, he said. The official said at least 300 unemployed teachers who had cleared the Punjab government's Teacher Eligibility Test were stopped a few yards away from the residence of the minister. The situation turned ugly, when the protesters refused to listen to the police which wanted to prevent them from reaching the minister's residence. But the teachers began removing police barricades blocking their way to the minister's house, he said. During lathi-charge, four teachers were injured, one of them a woman, the protesters said. Police said one of their men too was injured in the melee.

The West Bengal government Friday suspended for 60 days the two nursing students who were accused of killing 16 puppies in the compound of a state-run hospital, virtually ending their dreams to become nurses. "The two students have been suspended for 60 days on grounds of moral ethics and grave indiscipline," a senior official of the health department told PTI. During the period of 60 days, there would be several inquires to be held against the two students - Moutusi Mondal and Soma Burman, he said. The HRD Ministry is considering a proposal to extend the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009 up to class 12, according to senior officials. The RTE Act currently applies to children between six and 14 years studying from Class 1 to 8. It requires all private schools, except for minority institutions, to reserve 25 per cent of seats for underprivileged children. A sub-committee of the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE), in a report submitted in 2012, when UPA was in power, recommended the extension of the RTE Act. "A proposal regarding extension of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009, is under consideration of the ministry. Any decision in this regard would be intimated, once it is examined thoroughly," a senior HRD Ministry official said in a letter to education activist Ashok Agarwal. There was a day-long ruckus at Delhi University's Satyawati College (Evening) Thursday after the office of the college principal was sealed by the governing body, which also ordered the constitution of a fact-finding committee against the principal over alleged irregularities. The Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) has written to HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar demanding an ordinance on reservation roster for teaching positions in higher education institutions (HEIs). The University Grants Commission (UGC) had announced in March last that an individual department should be considered as the base unit to calculate the number of teaching posts to be reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates following an order by the Allahabad High Court in April 2017. The HRD Ministry had filed a special leave petition against the court order which was rejected by the Supreme Court order. The sit-in by a section of students of Presidency University was withdrawn Thursday evening after the authorities revoked suspension order of three students, issued for locking the main gate of the institute on September 10.
