HC restrains CPCB from coercive action against DDA over Rs 1 cr fine on it

The Delhi High Court has restrained the Central Pollution Control Board from taking any coercive action against land owning agency DDA pursuant to Rs 1 crore fine imposed on it for alleged non-compliance of the Graded Response Action Plan. The CPCB had in February imposed an environmental compensation of Rs 1 crore on the Delhi Delhi Authority (DDA) by holding it responsible for open burning and dumping of waste, including plastic as well as construction debris, illegal running of plastic industries and lack of regular sweeping of roads in Narela, Bawana, Patparganj and Okhla industrial areas here. Justice Vibhu Bakhru, while restraining the board from taking any coercive steps against the DDA, issued a notice to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and sought its reply on the plea by the land owning agency challenging the imposition of the fine. Punjab CM lays foundation stone for vegetable processing unit in Samrala

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh Thursday laid the foundation stone of a vegetable processing unit here. The Rs 521-crore vegetable processing plant is being jointly set up by IFFCO and Spain's CN Corp. The vegatable processing unit wouldpropel industrial growth and catalyse employment generation in the state, Amarinder said on the occasion. Talking about the state government'snew industrial policy, he said the revival of Mandi Gobindgarh industrial belt has seen 600 existing units restore operations, while 40 new units have also invested in the region. The Punjab government has so far inked 299 MoUs (Memorandum of Understanding) worth Rs 51,969 crore with several companies, he said. About 650 new projects worth Rs 46,902 crore with a proposed employment of 167,309 have come up during his government's tenure, Amarinder said. Tata Power arm TPREL to develop 100-MW solar power project in Gujarat

Tata Power said Thursday its arm Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL) will develop a 100-MW solar power project in Raghanesda Solar Park of Gujarat. "TPREL has received a letter of award (LoA) from Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL) on 28th May 2019 to develop a 100-MW solar project in Raghanesda Solar Park of Gujarat," a statement by Tata Power said. The power generated from the project will be supplied to GUVNL under a power purchase agreement (PPA) valid for 25 years from the scheduled commercial operation date, according to the statement. The company has won this capacity in a bid announced by GUVNL in March 2019. The project has to be commissioned within 15 months from the date of execution of the PPA. Ganga River water unfit for direct drinking, bathing:CPCB

The Ganga River water is absolutely unfit for "direct drinking" and only seven spots from where it passes can be consumed after disinfection, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has said. According to the latest data with the CPCB, most of the Ganga River water in the Uttar Pradesh-West Bengal stretch is unfit for drinking and bathing. A map released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) shows high level of coliform bacteria in the river. Out of 86 live monitoring stations installed in as many locations, only seven areas have been found to be fit for drinking after disinfection process while 78 have been found unfit. The data has been collected by live monitoring stations in the Ganga basin across the country to check the quality of the river water. In the country where scores of people flock to take a dip in the Ganga, which is considered as the lifeline of India, the CPCB says the river water is so polluted that it is unfit for bathing, let alone drinking. Researchers at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras here are developing indigenous processes for efficient recovery of oil from mature offshore wells.In collaboration with research laboratories in Australia, IIT Madras researchers are studying the efficacy of an emerging enhanced oil recovery method called 'Low-Salinity Enhanced Oil Recovery' (LSEOR)."Our research aims to develop indigenous methods for the recovery of crude oil from geological reservoirs, which is a complex process. There is still much that needs to be understood in the use of LSEOR methods. North Bengal poised for giant leap: BCC&I

Steps to eliminate locusts that attack crops in Rajasthan may be endangering the Great Indian Bustard, an expert says. Rajasthan's Chief Wildlife Warden Arindam Tomar has written to the Agriculture Department at the Centre to stop use of chemical pesticides to deal with the biggest swarms the state has seen in the last two decades. The locusts have spread to Jaisalmer's Pokaran, Ramdeora and adjoining areas in past one week after entering from Pakistan, and have become a huge threat to crops and vegetation, Locust Control Organisation Deputy Director K L Gurjar said. Delhi government sets plantation target to fight air pollution

DJB to create lake behind Raj Ghat for groundwater rejuvenation, museum at Kilokri

The Delhi Jal Board Wednesday said it will build a 40-acre lake at the existing depressions behind Raj Ghat for groundwater rejuvenation and a water museum at Kilokri in northeast Delhi. The board has approved Rs 36.51 crore for the creation of the lake and Rs 12 crore for the museum. Water for the lake, which will be created near the Raj Ghat bus depot, will be sourced from the Delhi Gate sewage treatment plant (STP) which can treat 15 million gallons of waste water per day. Currently, the STP discharges the treated water into the Yamuna. Provision of landscaping has also been included in the proposal for development of the lake, a DJB statement said. The site identified for the lake used to be an ash pond for the Raj Ghat power plant. It has not been utilised since the closure of the plant.
