Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers & Chemicals Ltd (GNFC) on Friday reported a 62 per cent increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 211 crore for the March quarter. Its net profit stood at Rs 130 crore in the year-ago period. Total income fell to Rs 2,177 crore during the fourth quarter of the last fiscal year from Rs 2,218 crore in the corresponding period of the preceding year. During the 2024-25 fiscal year, GNFC's net profit increased to Rs 597 crore from Rs 497 crore in the preceding year. Total income declined to Rs 8,393 crore last fiscal year from Rs 8,399 crore in the 2023-24 financial year. The estimated population of Asiatic lions in Gujarat has increased to 891 against 674 five years ago as per the census conducted this month, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel announced on Wednesday. In the previous census conducted in June 2020, the big cat population in the state was estimated at 674. "Estimated population of Asiatic lions has increased to 891," Patel told reporters here. The 16th Asiatic lion census, a four-day exercise, was conducted from May 10 to 13 in two phases, covering an area of 35,000 square kilometres across 11 districts. While a preliminary census was conducted on May 10 and 11, the final population count was done on May 12 and 13 with the help of 3,000 volunteers including regional, zonal and sub-zonal officers, enumerators, assistant enumerators and inspectors, said an official release. A sessions court in Ahmedabad on Friday granted 15-day interim bail to Bahubali Shah, one of the owners of leading Gujarati newspaper 'Gujarat Samachar', on health grounds. The Enforcement Directorate had arrested Shah a day before following raids at the newspaper's premises. Principal District and Sessions Judge K M Sojitra ordered Shah's release on bail till May 31 on furnishing surety and personal bond of Rs 10,000. The investigating official must be apprised of his health status every alternate day and Shah must cooperate with the agency, the court said. Shah had approached the court seeking bail on the grounds of "serious medical/health condition".

A total blackout for more than 7 hours was enforced in several parts of the border districts of Kutch and Banaskantha in Gujarat on Thursday night amid escalating tension between India and Pakistan, officials have said. Both Kutch and Banaskantha districts share a border with Pakistan. Officials confirmed that several parts of Kutch, including Bhuj, Nalia, Nakhatrana and Gandhidham towns, were put under total blackout as a precautionary measure to deter any offensive gesture by Pakistan. At least 14 persons have died in rain-related incidents as thunderstorms, along with strong winds and dust storms, battered several parts of Gujarat, officials said on Tuesday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds of up to 50-60 kmph across the state for the next few days. As many as 168 out of 253 talukas in the state received unseasonal rains in the last 24 hours, with Kheda, Gandhinagar, Mehsana and Vadodara districts getting 25 to 40 mm rains, the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) said in its update. Officials said strong winds uprooted trees, hoardings, and pillars, and parts of houses collapsed in several districts, leaving many injured. The Supreme Court on Monday told the Gujarat government that a compound wall, being constructed to prevent encroachment at a demotion site near Gir's Somnath Temple, should be five to six feet height. The observations came from a bench of Justices B R Gavai and Augustine George Masih which was informed by the state that they were constructing a compound wall to prevent encroachment. Contesting the petitioner's claims on the height of the compound wall, solicitor general Tushar Mehta, representing Gujarat, said the authorities could always protect a government land by constructing a compound wall. "Don't have a 12 feet wall. If you are protecting it, five feet, six feet is enough," Justice Gavai observed. Zydus Lifesciences on Saturday said the US health regulator has issued six observations after inspecting its Gujarat-based API manufacturing unit. "We wish to inform that the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) conducted a surveillance inspection at the group's API (active pharmaceutical ingredient) unit located at Dabhasa in Gujarat," the drug firm said in a regulatory filing. The inspection was conducted from April 21-25, 2025. "The inspection concluded with 6 observations and none of them were related to data integrity," Zydus Lifesciences said.
