New machine learning algorithm can help search new drugs

Researchers say they have developed a machine learning algorithm for drug discovery which is twice as efficient as the industry standard, and could accelerate the process of developing new treatments for diseases such as Alzheimer's. The team led by researchers at the University of Cambridge in the UK used the algorithm to identify four new molecules that activate a protein thought to be relevant for symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia. A key problem in drug discovery is predicting whether a molecule will activate a particular physiological process, according to the study published in the journal PNAS. It is possible to build a statistical model by searching for chemical patterns shared among molecules known to activate that process, but the data to build these models is limited because experiments are costly and it is unclear which chemical patterns are statistically significant. Machine learning is an application of artificial intelligence (AI) that provides systems ...

Western diet may up severe sepsis risk: Study

A Western diet high in fat and sugar can put a person at increased risk of developing severe sepsis -- one of the most common causes of death worldwide -- a study has found. The research, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, takes a closer look at how the Western diet affects the severity and outcome of sepsis. Sepsis, the body's reaction to fighting an infection, can lead to shock and organ failure, researchers said. It is the 11th most common cause of death worldwide. Researchers from Portland State University (PSU) in the US fed mice Western diet -- characterised as being low in fibre and high in fat and sugar. The mice showed an increase in chronic inflammation, sepsis severity and higher mortality rates than mice that were fed a normal diet. The findings suggest the mice had more severe sepsis and were dying faster because of something in their diet, not because of the weight gain or microbiome, the body's community of bacteria, said Brooke ...

Spinal cord may be 'smarter' than previously thought

Our spinal cord is able to process and control complex body movements, say scientists who suggest that the organ may be 'smarter' than previously thought. Our brains are thought as being at the centre of complex motor function and control. It is well known that the circuits in the spinal cord control seemingly simple things like the pain reflex in humans, and some motor control functions in animals. Research from Western University in Canada has shown that the spinal cord is also able to process and control more complex functions, like the positioning of your hand in external space. "This research has shown that a least one important function is being done at the level of the spinal cord and it opens up a whole new area of investigation to say, 'what else is done at the spinal level and what else have we potentially missed in this domain?'" said Andrew Pruszynski, assistant professor at Western University. This kind of hand control requires sensory inputs from multiple joints -- ...

Higher sodium intake may increase lightheadedness: Study

Higher sodium intake may increase lightheadedness, rather than preventing it, according to a US study that challenges traditional recommendations to treat the condition. Lightheadedness with standing, otherwise known as postural lightheadedness, results from a gravitational drop in blood pressure and is common among adults. While mild in many adults, it has been cited as an important contributing factor in some harmful clinical events, such as falls, according to the study published in the Journal of Clinical Hypertension. As a result, greater sodium intake is widely viewed as an intervention for preventing lightheadedness when moving from seated to standing positions, researchers said. However, contrary to this recommendation, researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in the US found that higher sodium intake, when studied in the context of the DASH-Sodium trial (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), actually increases lightheadedness. These findings challenge ..

Contraceptive pills may impair women's emotion recognition: Study

Women who use birth control pills may have a poor judgement of subtle facial expressions, which could impact their intimate relationships, according to a study. Scientists from the University of Greifswald in Germany challenged women to identify complex emotional expressions like pride or contempt, rather than basic ones like happiness or fear. They revealed subtle changes in emotion recognition associated with oral contraceptive pill (OCP) use. The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Neuroscience, found that OCP users were nearly 10 per cent worse on average than non-users in deciphering the most enigmatic emotional expressions. The finding raises questions over the possible impact of OCPs on social interactions in intimate relationships, researchers said. Women deciding whether to take an oral contraceptive have access to a lot of reliable information about the potential physical effects, they said. Besides birth control, hormonal contraceptives can help control acne, heavy
