The newly appointed board of governors of the Medical Council of India has approved a proposal to relax norms for DNB (Diplomate of National Board) degree holders wanting to teach in hospitals like PGI, AIIMS and other state medical colleges, Niti Aayog member V K Paul said on Sunday. DNB doctors, who get their training at private hospitals which do not have medical colleges, obtain their post graduate qualifications from the National Board of Examination (NBE). A notification to give effect to the new norms will be issued shortly, Paul -- who is also chairperson of new board of governors of the Medical Council of India (MCI) -- told PTI. As per the proposal, DNB degree holders working in over 100-bed broad specialties and super-specialties private hospitals will be eligible for faculty positions on completion of one additional year as senior residency at any MCI-recognised institution, he added. Hence, they are not treated at par with doctors who obtain post graduate degrees of MD ...
According to a new research, a chemical that highlights tumour cells can help surgeons spot and safely remove brain cancer cells. The study was presented at the 2018 NCRI Cancer Conference. The research was presented by Dr Kathreena Kurian, an Associate Professor in brain tumour research at the University of Bristol and consultant neuropathologist at North Bristol NHS Trust, UK. The study was led by Colin Watts, Professor of Neurosurgery and chair of the Birmingham brain cancer programme at the University of Birmingham, UK.The research was carried out with patients who had suspected glioma, the most common form of brain cancer. Treatment usually involves surgery to remove as much cancer as possible, but it can be challenging for surgeons to identify all of the cancer cells while avoiding healthy brain tissue.Researchers say that using the fluorescent marker helps surgeons to distinguish the most aggressive cancer cells from other brain tissue and they hope this will ultimately improve .
When we meet new people, our first impressions of their personality may depend, at least in part, on their body shape, according to a new research.
An online intervention programme can help prevent depressive episodes among adolescents who are most at risk, a study has found. Although up to 20 per cent of adolescents experience a depressive episode each year, the medical community has struggled to implement programmes that effectively prevent depression. Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago in the US have worked to fill this gap by conducting clinical trials to evaluate and compare interventions. The study, published in JAMA Network Open, highlights the positive effect of CATCH-IT, a web-based intervention. The multicentre, randomised clinical trial compared the CATCH-IT intervention -- which consisted of depression-specific online learning modules, motivational interviews and coaching -- with a control intervention. The control intervention consisted of general health education and was similarly delivered through online learning modules. More than 350 adolescents ages 13 to 18 from a mix of rural and urban areas .
The US arm of drug firm Lupin is recalling 6,752 bottles of Testosterone Topical solution from the American market on account of defective container, the USFDA said. Lupin Pharmaceuticals Inc is recalling the 6,752 bottles of Testosterone Topical solution in the strength of 30mg/1.5mL manufactured by Lupin at its Pithampur plant, the US health regulator said in an Enforcement Report. The reason for recall is "Defective Container: Repetitive complaints received indicating pump not working," it added. The voluntary ongoing nationwide recall is a class III recall, the report said. As per the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA), a class III recall is initiated in a situation,"in which use of or exposure to a violative product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences.
Certain genetic factors may impact our body in intriguingly paradoxical ways. A team of scientists has identified 14 new genetic variations that were linked with higher Body Mass Index (BMI) but have the potential to lower risk of diabetes, lower blood pressure and lower heart disease risk.
A recent US study claiming that radio-frequency radiation emitted by cell phones causes cancer in rats does not apply to humans, according to experts. There is "clear evidence" that male rats exposed to high levels of radio frequency radiation (RFR) like that used in cell phones developed cancerous heart tumours, the study had concluded. The USD 30 million study by the US National Toxicology Program (NTP) that took 10 years to complete also showed "some evidence" of tumours in the brain and adrenal gland of exposed male rats. Following the report, some NGOs and scientists propose that the WHO's Inter Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) must upgrade the present Group 2B (possible human carcinogen) classification of RF radiation to Group1 (human carcinogen). But specialist agencies have asserted that the finding does not apply to humans. The International Commission on Non Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), the panel whose recommendations are followed by majority of nations and ...
President Ram Nath Kovind Saturday asked young medical graduates of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Rishikesh to become not just competent doctors but also compassionate healers. The three patients diagnosed with Zika infection are minors and they are being treated, he said, without giving more details. The Union Health Ministry had sent a team of experts from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and ...
Analysis of Zika virus strains collected from Jaipur, where there is an outbreak of the disease, has suggested that they do not have the known mutations linked to fetal microcephaly, a serious birth defect in new-borns delivered by infected mothers, according to the Health Ministry. TheICMR-NIV, Pune has sequenced 5 Zika virus strains collected at different time points of the Jaipur outbreak. "Advanced molecular studies of Zika virus strains, carried out through Next Generation Sequencing suggest that the known mutations linked to fetal microcephaly and high transmissibility of Zika virus in Aedes mosquitoes are not present in the current Zika virus strain that has affected Rajasthan," the ministry said Saturday. However, the government has maintained high vigil of the possibility of adverse pregnancy outcomes in women exposed to Zika virus as the strain may mutate in future or some other unknown/host factors may play a role in microcephaly /other birth defects, the statement ...

Increasing the daily amount of protein intake -- known to slow the loss of muscle mass -- can help older adults preserve the ability to perform daily activities as well as prevent their risks of disability, showed a research.
According to a new research, people with Alzheimer's disease who were treated with diabetes drugs showed considerably fewer markers of the disease including abnormal microvasculature and deregulated gene expressions in their brains, compared to patients who were treated using other kinds of drugs. The study was performed by the researchers of Mount Sinai School of Medicine, results of which were published in the journal of 'PLOS One'.This is the first study to examine what happens in the pathways of brain tissues and endothelial cells, the cells lining blood vessels in the brains of Alzheimer's patients treated with diabetes medication. The results of the study will help future Alzheimer's disease studies and potential new therapies targeting specific cells since they suggest that targeting the brain's capillary system could have beneficial effects in Alzheimer's patients. Many elderly people with diabetes have brain changes that are hallmarks of Alzheimer's. Despite this linkage, two ..
Consumption of more protein-based food could contribute to helping older people to delay disability, according to a study published in the Journal of American Geriatrics Society. To live successfully and independently, older adults need to be able to manage two different levels of life skills: basic daily care and basic housekeeping activities. Basic daily care includes feeding yourself, bathing, dressing, and going to the toilet on your own. You also need to handle basic housekeeping activities, such as managing your finances and having the mobility to shop and participate in social activities. If someone has trouble performing these two types of life skills, this may bring on problems that can reduce the quality of life and independence. People aged 85 and above are at higher risk for becoming less able to perform these life skills.Protein is known to slow the loss of muscle mass. Having enough muscle mass can help preserve the ability to perform daily activities and prevent ...
According to a recent study, the presence of common breast cancer mutations are not only indicative of increased breast cancer risk, but certain rare mutations are also indicative of increased risk of interval breast cancers and death. The study was published in Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research."It is not enough just to know which markers can predict an increase in breast cancer risk. We also need to know which biomarkers can identify women with increased risk of aggressive interval cancers that are not usually detected during routine mammography screening," said senior study author Jingmei Li.Interval breast cancers are detected between mammography screenings; these cancers are often aggressive and have a poor prognosis. "About 20 per cent of women who partake in routine mammography screening will be diagnosed with interval breast cancer. More sensitive methods to predict and detect these lethal cancers are sorely needed," explained Li.Li and .
