Hockey World Cup: Important to start with a good win, says Harmanpreet

India captain Harmanpreet Singh on Saturday expressed satisfaction on his side's 3-1 victory over Wales in the men's Hockey World Cup opener here, saying that it was important to win the first match by a good margin and get full three points. "We played very well. Our aim was to create chances and score goals match after match. It doesn't matter who is the man of the match or who is scoring the goals. We just need to score goals. We played with that mindset," Harmanpreet, who scored a brace in the team's win, said after the match. "It was important to begin with a good win. We won 3-1 and took three points, which is a good result," he added. Wales scored in the final minutes to deny India a clean sheet, but Harmanpreet said his team would learn from their mistakes in future matches. "We tried our best, but they also played well. This was only the first match, and we will try not to make mistakes in future matches." said the ace drag-flicker. India scored all three goals from penal

FIH World Cup: PAK hand head coach role to goalkeeping coach Bob Veldhof

In what appears to be a setback for Pakistan ahead of the FIH World Cup, the national federation has elevated its goalkeeping coach Bob Johan Veldhof to the position of head coach, after Herman Kruis returned to the Netherlands to continue with his existing assignment. Just hours before the Pakistan squad departed for the World Cup, the Pakistan Hockey Federation announced that veteran Dutch coach Kruis, who had been originally named head coach, would instead serve as an adviser to the federation, while Veldhof would take charge of the national team. The PHF had roped in the Dutch duo of Kruis and Veldhof along with Christopher Bowen following the FIH Pro League in Europe in June-July, appointing them as head coach, goalkeeping coach and assistant coach respectively as part of a coaching shakeup. A reliable source said Kruis had informed the PHF that he would only be able to take up a full-time coaching assignment with the Pakistan team after the World Cup. "He had left for the ...

India's Hockey World Cup journey: From 1971 bronze to 2023 campaign

India's men's hockey team has had a roller-coaster journey in the World Cup, from winning the inaugural bronze in 1971 to lifting the title in 1975 and then enduring a long wait for another podium finish. The eight-time Olympic champions' only World Cup triumph came in Kuala Lumpur in 1975, when Ajit Pal Singh's side defeated arch-rivals Pakistan 2-1 in the final. Pakistan remain the most successful team in the tournament with four titles, while the Netherlands, Australia and Germany have won it three times each. Belgium are the other champions. Here is a look at India's World Cup journey through the 2023 edition: 1971 Barcelona ============= The World Cup was conceived after India and Pakistan jointly proposed a hockey tournament on the lines of football's World Cup at the FIH Council meeting in 1969. Pakistan were initially awarded the hosting rights, but political tensions between the two countries forced the inaugural edition to be shifted to Barcelona. India topped Pool A a

India out to make history at Hockey World Cup, says coach Craig Fulton

Fully aware of the legacy he is chasing, Indian men's hockey team chief coach Craig Fulton is determined to break the 51-year-old medal jinx at the World Cup, and said the Harmanpreet Singh-led is eyeing to "write its own piece of history" in the upcoming showpiece. Fulton, who guided India to their second consecutive bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, very well knows that consistency will be key if India are to win a drought ending medal at the upcoming World Cup in The Netherlands and Belgium from August 15 to 30. Eight-time Olympic gold medallist, India boast of only three World Cup medals, the last of which -- a gold -- came way back in the 1975 edition in Kuala Lumpur under Ajit Pal Singh's captaincy. "1975 was the last time India won it and what's important is to get consistency in the tournament and bring that consistency into the Asian Games and we win the Asian Games as a priority as well," the 51-year-old South African told PTI. "We are excited about the opportunity. ...

India thrash Chile 6-0 to enter FIH Hockey Women's Nations Cup final

India produced another dominant performance to outclass Chile 6-0 and storm into the final of the FIH Hockey Women's Nations Cup here on Saturday. Navneet Kaur (6th, 13th) and Deepika (14th, 18th) struck two goals apiece, while Neha (32nd) and Rutuja Dadaso Pisal (39th) also found the target as India notched their fourth successive win in the tournament. Captain Salima Tete, who was named player of the match, had a key role in India's emphatic win with her all-round display. India will face the winners of the second semifinal between the USA and hosts New Zealand in the title clash. India controlled possession from the start and took the lead through Navneet, who converted the team's first penalty corner with a crisp strike into the corner. The lead doubled after Salima made a surging run down the left flank before sending in a precise cross for an unmarked Navneet to deflect home in front of goal. India struck again almost immediately as dragflicker Deepika converted a penalty c

Fulton promises detailed plan ahead of Men's Hockey World Cup campaign

Indian men's hockey coach Craig Fulton has promised a "tailored and detailed" plan for each one of the tricky opponents that await his team in the World Cup later this year and backed the currently faltering side to peak at the right time. India have managed just one win this season, a penalty shootout triumph over Australia in an FIH Pro League match in Hobart. The team is drawn to play top-seeded England, traditional rivals Pakistan, and a determined Wales side in Pool D of the World Cup starting August 15 in the Netherlands and Belgium. All group-stage matches will be held at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands. "We'll be working hard on our structure, our press, and our finishing - the fine margins that decide games at this level. Every opponent in this pool has different strengths, so our preparation will be tailored and detailed. The next few months are about peaking at exactly the right moment," Fulton was quoted as saying in a Hockey India press ...

Discontent grows as Pakistan appoint Junaid interim coach for WC qualifiers

An unhappy Pakistan hockey team has flown to Egypt for a crucial World Cup qualifier tournament under the supervision of a interim head coach Khawaja Junaid who was banned for life in 2023 by an inquiry committee of the national federation. "Junaid will supervise the team and the interim president Muhuyuddin Wani brought him on board because of the short time available before the World Cup qualifiers," a spokesperson of Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) said. A reliable source in the PHF said the players were not happy with the appointment of Junaid, an Olympian, as they had asked the federation to hire Dutch coach Roelant Oltmans at least for the qualifying tournament. "Captain Ammad Butt also tried to contact the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Mohsin Naqvi but he was unsucessful," the source said. He said Junaid was not a popular choice of the players because of his past record as head coach of the senior and junior teams. In 2023, an independent inquiry committee of the
