Several traffic diversions were imposed on borders of the national capital from Monday in view of Independence Day celebration with heavy vehicles prohibited from entering the city, according to an advisory. According to the police advisory, elaborate law and order and traffic arrangements have been made for the celebrations on August 15. No heavy transport vehicle (HTV) will be allowed to enter the city on Monday at 10 pm to Tuesday 12 pm and similarly from Wednesday 10 pm to Thursday 12 pm, the advisory stated. In view of the restrictions, the police urged essential service providers to keep sufficient essential commodities such as oxygen cylinders, among others in advance so that they may not face any difficulty during this period, it said. General public and motorists are advised to keep patience, observe traffic rules and road discipline and follow direction of traffic personnel deployed at all intersections, the advisory added. Ahead of Independence Day, the DMRC on Sunday advised people not to fly kites in the vicinity of elevated metro lines passing through residential areas for their safety and to prevent disruption of metro services. "As kite flying gathers pace around August 15, there is a likelihood of kite strings getting entangled in the OHE (overhead equipment) wires or getting stuck in the pantograph (which draws power from OHE) of a moving train if kites are flown in the area of elevated metro lines," Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Principal Executive Director Anuj Dayal said in an advisory. "Such incidents have the potential to not only disrupt the metro services by damaging/tripping the OHE or pantograph but may also prove fatal to those flying kites with metallic maanjha," he said. Myanmar's military government on Thursday pardoned nearly 10,000 prisoners to mark the 76th anniversary of gaining independence from Britain, but it wasn't immediately clear if any of those released included the thousands of political detainees jailed for opposing army rule. The head of Myanmar 's military council, Senior Gen Min Aung Hlaing, pardoned 9,652 prisoners to mark the holiday, state-run MRTV television reported.
