IND vs ENG 1st Test: Tom Hartley didn't find a lot of help from the wicket

Left-arm spinner Tom Hartley said Sunday the strip used for the first Test against India didn't offer much to the tweakers and he had to "keep a cool head" to make his debut memorable with a seven-wicket haul in a famous England victory. Hartley's 7/62 fashioned England's memorable 28-run win on the fourth day of the Test here. India's chase of 231 went horribly south once Hartley spun into the home team top-order, igniting a rot that saw them getting bowled out for 202 in the final over of the day. "It's unbelievable, will not sink in for a while to be honest. I don't think there was a lot of help, I had to keep a cool head," Hartley told the broadcaster after the win. "It was a tough one (on the first innings bowling effort), it didn't spin as much as I thought, and I had a chat with Stokes, McCullum and the team management." He said said Ben Stokes had asked him to bowl into the surface. "The dressing room has great vibes, it's a fantastic dressing room, one of the best. It's

Kohli never been to NCA for fitness issues: Rohit lauds Virat's work ethic

Virat Kohli has hardly ever set foot at the Bengaluru-based National Cricket Academy for any fitness-related rehabilitation work, said Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, who wants aspiring cricketers to follow the ace batter's exemplary work-ethic. "Virat Kohli has never been to NCA in his entire career. I would say that all the younger players should look up to the passion that he has," Rohit told former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik on JioCinema. "Leave alone how he plays the cover drive, flick, cut but first things first you have to understand what is the quality of the players that makes him where he is today." Kohli has opted out of the first two Tests of the ongoing five-match series against England for "personal reasons". "I have watched Kohli enough. He can easily be satisfied with what he has achieved. He can say that I will take it easy in these 2-3 series, I will come later, but he is always there for the team," said Rohit. Staying hungry ============ The Indian skipper

IND vs ENG 1st Test: 231 was gettable, we didn't bat well enough - Rohit

India skipper Rohit Sharma lamented his top batmen's failure in the opening Test of the five-match series against England here on Sunday, saying they lacked the fight and character showed by the team's lower-order batters after being set a "gettable" 231-run target. India were all out for 202 to lose the match by 28 runs, completing a remarkable turnaround a day after conceding a huge first-innings lead of 190 runs. Ollie laid the foundation for a famous English win with a monumental knock of 196 before debutant left-arm spinner Tom Hartley finished with excellent figures of 7/62 in the second innings. "Hard to pinpoint where it went wrong. With a lead of 190 we were in control but exceptional batting - probably one of the best I've seen in Indian conditions by an overseas player, well played Ollie Pope," Rohit said at the post-match presentation ceremony. "I thought 230 was gettable but it wasn't to be. Thought we bowled in the right areas, we analysed what went well and what didn

IND vs ENG 1st Test: Not putting pressure by setting target says Mhambrey

India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey said on Saturday that the team is not worried over the size of target despite England establishing a handy second innings lead on the third day of the first Test here. After conceding a hefty 190-run first innings lead, England redeemed themselves in the second dig making 316 for six to move ahead by 126 runs riding on Ollie Pope's unbeaten hundred. "We are not looking at any particular target (to chase) as I said the objective is to come tomorrow morning and get early wickets and limit their total. "We are not putting any pressure on ourselves by setting any target. We just want to bowl in the right areas to extract turn and bounce from the wicket," Mhambrey said in his post-day press meet. Mhambrey based his confidence on the fact that the turn on the pitch is easy to negate as it is not of the sharp kind. "If you look at the way the game has progressed over the last few days from the first session, the amount of turn the ball has taken, I thin

IND vs ENG 1st Test: English spin coach Patel concedes tough day with ball

England assistant coach Jeetan Patel on Friday admitted that it was a tough day in office for his bowlers against a set of Indian batters who are adept in putting the opposition consistently under the pump. After getting shot out for 246 in their first innings, England bowlers failed to drag their team back to the match as India piled up 421 for seven for a lead of 175 runs. It was a tough day. Playing against India in India is tough as they create a lot of pressure. The way we created chances, some may have gone a little bit our way, then it would have been different. But that's cricket, said Patel during his post-day press conference. "But it's another opportunity to play Test cricket in India, to take Test wickets, another opportunity to learn." Patel lauded Joe Root for supporting the three main spinners with a fine spell. We saw a typical Joe Root. He created opportunities. He is going to get hit for boundaries. He is going to bowl attacking deliveries and ask attacking ...

IND vs ENG Tests 2024: Anil Kumble predicts India to win series 4-1

The legendary Anil Kumble has termed England's bowling attack for the opening Test against India, starting in Hyderabad on Thursday as "highly inexperienced", while predicting a comfortable 4-1 win for the hosts in the five-match series. England announced a three-pronged spin attack on the eve of the Hyderabad Test with uncapped spinner Tom Hartley and one-Test old Rehan Ahmed teaming up with Jack Leach, with Mark Wood being the lone fast bowler. With Ben Stokes ruling himself out from sharing bowling workload throughout the five-Test series, England skipper may face some troubles finding the right mix but Kumble said it will be interesting to see how the visitors approach the rubber. "It will all depend on how Jack Leach leads the spin attack. Three spinners, of course the English management obviously have had a look at the pitch and they believe that it's going to take turn," Kumble replied to a PTI query during an interaction organised by Jio Cinema. "In that sense, just with on

Rajat Patidar: Fine blend of domestic cricket grind and IPL temperament

There is very little chance that Rajat Patidar will make it to the playing eleven during India's opening Test against England unless the hosts decide on going a bowler short. The 30-year-old Patidar's maiden entry into the Indian Test team is, however, a testament to the country's superb domestic structure that produces battle-hardened professionals and rewards them for the consistency and temperament. Whether earning plaudits from the country's most successful domestic coach Chandrakant Pandit while playing Ranji Trophy for Madhya Pradesh or looking the part while having Virat Kohli at the other end in pressure IPL games, Patidar has proved at every level and unlikely to disappoint when it matters the most. So, what makes Patidar special as compared to some of his other domestic contemporaries who were also in contention? Vijay Dahiya, who has seen enough of Indian domestic talent as first-class and IPL coach as well as a broadcaster, explains it in simple terms. "Rajat knows how

IND-ENG Playing 11: Axar or Kuldeep? Rohit's big headache ahead of 1st Test

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma on Wednesday admitted that the team management had a tough time making the third spinner choice between Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav for the opening Test against England but hinted that the former might just have made the final cut. Behind Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, India are primed to pick a third spinner for the first Test against England, starting here from Thursday. "If the wicket has bounce or if it doesn't have bounce, he (Kuldeep) still is a factor in those types of conditions because he's got superb variations. Obviously, he is a very mature bowler now from what he was a few years back," Rohit said in the pre-match press conference. "He's not played a lot of Test cricket in India because of Ashwin and Jadeja. We've seen it in the past as well. With our middle-order (batting), in the past, a lot of us (batters) got an opportunity pretty late. "But that's the reality of it, you can't hide away from it. But yes, he's a very tempting ..
