Axar Patel: From journeyman to India's Man Friday in white-ball formats

Kane Williamson stood between India and an all-win record in the Champions Trophy group stage, keeping New Zealand's chase of 250 flickering with a polished 81. Till then batting judiciously, Williamson gave a full-hearted charge against Axar Patel and the slightly slanted delivery evaded his downcoming bat for KL Rahul to complete the stumping. It was the last ball of Axar's spell that read 10-0-32-1, and stood out for its accuracy and the cunningness to maximise his ability in favourable conditions. But the effort understandably went unnoticed in the din surrounding fellow spinner Varun Chakravarthy's five-wicket haul. But it is nothing new for Axar, as he once was labelled mercilessly as poor man's Jadeja' for the similarity in his skills a left-arm spin bowler and a left-handed batter. However, it was true that Axar was struggling to break free from the shadow of his illustrious senior teammate. The only way Axar could have cut open a path for himself was to improve his batt

IND vs NZ final: Love for batting keeps everything else in place - Kohli

Architect of India's win over Australia in the Champions Trophy semifinal, Virat Kohli said that as long as his love for the game remains and he continues working for the team, he has no doubt that success will follow. Kohli once again showcased his big-match temperament with a knock of 84 off 98 balls against Australia in the semifinal, guiding India to a clinical 4-wicket win, chasing down the 265-run target in challenging conditions on Tuesday. He had struck a century against arch-rivals Pakistan in the group stage. "I just love playing this game, I just love batting. As long as love for the game and batting is alive, all other things can take care of themselves," Kohli said in a video posted on BCCI.TV. "You are not going to a desperate situation and put your head down, thank God. Just keep working towards what the team wants, you will have results like these more often than not." Kohli's knock included some quick singles and doubles, with only five boundaries in his ...

India's stance on cricket with Pakistan is clear and categorical: Shukla

BCCI vice president Rajeev Shukla on Wednesday said it is very categorical and clear that resumption of bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan is subjected to Indian government's clearance. The senior BCCI official, who is here on the invitation of the Pakistan Cricket Board to watch the Champions Trophy semifinal between New Zealand and South Africa, also said India team doesn't depend on favourable pitches to excel. As far as you are asking about (cricket) between the two countries, it is very categorical and clear that it is the (Indian) government's decision. Whatever the government of India says, we will go as per them," Shukla told the Pakistan media on Wednesday. Pakistan is hosting an international tournament after a long time and it is a good thing. They have organised it well, he added. While Shukla agreed the fans from both countries want bilateral ties to be resumed, he did not sound positive on the idea of playing at a neutral venue. It is true that fans from bo

ICC rankings: Kohli moves up to No 4 in ODI rankings; Axar, Shami climb up

India batting superstar Virat Kohli on Wednesday moved up a spot to reach fourth place in the ICC ODI rankings for batters after his match-winning 84 against Australia in Champions Trophy semifinal. Kohli's rise, however, coincided with skipper Rohit Sharma dropping down two positions to fifth as South Africa's Heinrich Klaasen also moved up one spot to take the third. India vice-captain and opener Shubman Gill continues to hold the top spot followed by Pakistan's Babar Azam at second. Among other Indians, spin bowling all-rounder Axar Patel and pacer Mohammed Shami also moved up in the rankings for all-rounders and bowlers respectively. Patel moved up to 13th spot with career-high 194 rating points in the latest release as per the ICC among all-rounders, which saw Afghanistan's Azmatullah Omarzai replacing compatriot Mohammad Nabi in the process. Omarzai now has a total of 296 rating points and moved up two positions to claimed the No 1 ranking. With eight wickets so far in the

IND vs AUS: Strike rotation was key to my innings - Kohli on his 56 singles

India's batting mainstay Virat Kohli on Tuesday likened his match-winning effort in the Champions Trophy semifinal against Australia to the unbeaten hundred against Pakistan and singled out strike rotation as the most important aspect to succeed in the prevailing conditions here. Kohli was not able to close the chase against Australia but his 84 off 98 balls went a long way in India comfortably overhauling the 265-run in challenging batting conditions. Just like the game against Pakistan, quick singles and doubles formed the basis of his innings comprising only five boundaries. "It (his innings) was pretty similar to the other day against Pakistan. It is about understanding the conditions and rotating the strike because partnerships on this pitch are important," said Kohli after receiving the player of the match award. Kohli's fluent effort included 56 singles and four twos, indicating his exemplary fitness level. "It all depends on the conditions and then I play my innings. My ..

India's dominance continues: 5th final appearance in seven ICC tournaments

The Aussies were banking on Dubai's driest pitch, with six spin options packed into their XI. But either the pitch didn't deteriorate as expected, or Kohli's class nullified it-likely, a mix of both.
