Vizag Test: Bumrah's double strike leaves England at 155 for four at tea

Jasprit Bumrah's twin strikes in a searing spell gave India much needed momentum after Zak Crawley attacked the home team spinners to ensure England reached 155 for four at tea on day two of the second Test here on Saturday. Skipper Ben Stokes (5 batting) and Jonny Bairstow (24 batting) were in the middle at the break with England still trailing India by 241 runs. The visitors collected runs 123 runs in27 overs in the afternoon session. Kuldeep Yadav had Ben Duckett (21 off 17) caught at silly point shortly after the lunch break. Crawley however maintained the offensive with a belligerent knock including 11 fours and two sixes. Going with the 'Bazball' template, England were scoring at five an over before Bumrah wrested the initiative with crucial wickets of Joe Root (5 off 10) and in-form Ollie Pope (23 off 55) in an impactful four over spell. Bumrah got the reverse swing going and put Root in his two minds by mixing the in and away swinger, leading to his downfall. Root was ...

IND-ENG 2nd Test: Jaiswal makes memorable double ton; India all out for 396

Yashasvi Jaiswal carried the load of Indian batting on his young shoulders with a remarkable double hundred as the hosts ended with 396 in their first innings on day two of the second Test against England. Resuming at an overnight 336 for six, India added 60 runs to their total before getting all out in 112 overs with little over 30 minutes left for lunch. As was the case on day one, India had to rely on Jaiswal (209 off 290) to get the majority of the runs. In response, Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett had taken England to 32 for no loss in six overs at lunch. Duckett targeted pacer Mukesh Kumar, who leaked 22 runs in his two overs. After sweeping Shoaib Bashir for a six and four, Jaiswal became third youngest Indian to make a double hundred after Vinod Kambli and the great Sunil Gavaskar. The celebrations were euphoric for a dedicated cricketer who slept in tents at Azad Maidan in Mumbai in his growing up days, having come to the metropolis from a nondescript village in Uttar ...

Ashwin engages in animated chat with umpire Erasmus at close on Day 1

Veteran India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin attracted a lot of attention in the social media space when he rushed to have a chat with on-field umpire Marais Erasmus at stumps on day one of the second Test against England here on Friday. Ashwin, who was batting alongside centurion Yashasvi Jaiswal at close, was quite animated during the conversation with Erasmus. Apparently, the experienced Zimbabwean umpire was trying to remind Ashwin, who was trying to have an extended chat with Jaiswal, about the time as the day's proceedings was getting to a close. India scored 336 for six at stumps with Jaiswal making an unbeaten 179. With four England spinners in operation, 93 overs were bowled on the day. Debutant Rajat Patidar was asked about Ashwin's conversation with the umpire in the post-day media interaction but the debutant did not know what transpired between the two. I don't know what the conversation was about, said Patidar, who made 32 off 72 balls.

IND vs ENG 2nd Test: Vizag wicket is really good to bat on - Patidar

Years of toil on the domestic circuit made Rajat Patidar fully equipped for his red-ball India debut and day one of the second Test against England was just another "normal" day in the life of the 30-year-old late bloomer. Patidar, who made his first-class debut with Madhya Pradesh way back in 2015, knew that he was going to be part of the playing eleven a day before the game. Having recently scored back-to-back hundreds against England Lions for India A, Patidar went into the big game high on confidence. He looked assured in his 72-ball 32 and one of his three boundaries came via a reverse sweep. He could not convert the start as he played on while going for a forward-defensive shot against leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed. "It was a dream come true moment for me. Representing the country is a dream for every player. Going into the middle, there was no pressure as I have played lot of games in domestic cricket. I slept well last night. It was normal for me," Patidar said after close of ...

IND vs ENG 2nd Test: Jaiswal was focused on playing every session

Young India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal struck a career-best unbeaten 179 on the opening day of the second Test against England here on Friday and the left-hander said his focus was on batting sessions, while dispatching bad balls. The 22-year-old's magnificent knock, his second century in six Tests, took India to 336 for 6 from 93 overs when the stumps were drawn. "I wanted to play it session by session. When they were bowling well, I just wanted to get through that spell. However, I wanted to convert the loose balls, and play till the end," Jaiswal said after the day's play. "Rahul (Dravid) sir and Rohit (Sharma) bhai kept giving me the confidence and told me to convert this into a big innings, and stay till the end," said the youngster who decorated his innings with 17 fours and five sixes off 257 balls. He made 171 on his Test debut against the West Indies last year. Unlike the series opener in Hyderabad where Jaiswal made 80, here he ensured that he converted his strong start int

IND vs ENG 2nd Test: 'Always knew...' - Shoaib Bashir opens up on visa row

The "slight hassle" caused by a visa delay for the India tour is very much a thing of the past for 20-year-old England debutant Shoaib Bashir, who is chuffed about Rohit Sharma being his first Test wicket. Bashir, who is of Pakistan heritage, could not travel with the England squad to Hyderabad from Abu Dhabi for the series opener due to a visa delay. He joined the team in the middle of the Hyderabad Test before witnessing a special win. On Friday, the 6'4 tall off-spinner showed what he was capable of and why skipper Ben Stokes picked him in the squad after watching a video clip of his bowling on social media. Bashir, who played only six first class games before getting his big break, was England's best spinner on the opening day, returned figures of two for 100 in 28 overs. He also bowled the most number of overs on the day. "It's been a very special, special day. For all that I've been through in the last two to three years, it made it even more special. IND vs ENG 2nd Test Jaiswal's stroke-filled ton takes India to 225/3 at Tea

Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal struck a high-quality hundred to push India to 225 for three at tea on day one of the second Test against England here on Friday. Jaiswal (125 batting off 185 balls) changed the tempo of the innings with his attractive strokeplay in the second session in which India collected 122 runs in 32 overs. Shreyas Iyer (27 off 59) was the lone batter to be dismissed in the afternoon. The southpaw, who took 89 balls to reach his half-century in the morning, took another 62 deliveries to complete his second Test century. The 22-year-old had made 171 on his Test debut in the Caribbean last year. Jaiswal and debutant Rajat Patidar (25 batting off 47) were at the crease at tea. The standout feature of Jaiswal's innings was his ability to hit the ground and aerial shots with equal ease. His fearless approach was best summed when he stepped out to smash let-arm spinner Tom Hartley for a six over long on to get to three figures. He raised his arms in celebration with

IND vs ENG 2nd Test: Sarfaraz Khan hopes to join Richards, Kohli, Miandad

The mountain of runs that he scored in domestic circuit might have opened the doors of Indian cricket to him, but for Sarfaraz Khan the learning never stops as he aspires to join the league of legends like Virat Kohli, Viv Richards and Javed Miandad. Sarfaraz has been recently drafted into the India squad for the second Test against England starting here from Friday after KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja were ruled out due to injuries. The prolific Mumbai batter turned into a fan-boy while discussing his learning process. "I like to watch Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Sir Vivian Richards, and even Javed Miandad because my dad has told me that I play like him. I watch Joe Root's batting also. "Anyone who is succeeding, I am watching them to see how they are doing it so I can learn and apply it. I want to continue doing this, whether it's in the Ranji Trophy or playing for India in the future," Sarfaraz told JioCinema. But then there is a real-life hero for Sarfaraz -- his father Naushad

IND vs ENG: Stokes keeps his promise with Root, makes 'a bowler' out of him

Ben Stokes had promised Joe Root to make a bowler out of him and the maverick England skipper is glad that he has succeeded in his mission, evidence of which were the five wickets the top batter picked in a famous win. England's best batter Root was also their best bowler in the first innings of the Hyderabad Test against India and ended with five wickets in the game. He picked up the key wicket of K L Rahul in the second innings, following his four wickets in the first, to play a major part in England's sensational comeback win. Root got the ball to turn at good pace and his straighter one also troubled the Indian batters. With Jack Leach out of second Test, Root will be expected to shoulder more responsibility in an experienced spin department. He bowled a total of 48 overs in the series opener. "I did always say to Joe I thought he under-bowled himself as captain, and when he walked off with four-fer I did say to him, 'see, I told ya I'd make a bowler out of ya'. "Having someo

IND vs ENG 2nd Test: KS Bharat unveils India's plan to counter England

There is no panic in the injury-hit Indian camp, declared wicketkeeper K S Bharat on Thursday, asserting that the home side has made fresh plans to deal with England's attacking approach, including employing the sweep shot as and when required in the second Test here. Bharat, who will be playing in front of his home crowd, said the team has worked on its shortcomings in the series-opener in which England staged a sensational comeback to win the game by 28 runs. Led by Ollie Pope, England batters threw the Indian spinners off their plans with a barrage of sweeps and reverse sweeps. They are set to maintain that intensity in the Test beginning here on Friday. "They really played very well. Credit to them. Ollie Pope really played good shots," Bharat said in the pre-match press conference. India would be without star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and top batter K L Rahul due to injuries. "In our team meetings we spoke about the things we could have done better and yes, we certainly hav

Expected to make his India debut against England in the second Test here, prolific middle-order batter Rajat Patidar says he prides himself in being a good learner and has been trying to upgrade his skills by observing the iconic Virat Kohli. The injury-forced absence of KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja is set to finally open a window of opportunity for the 30-year-old, who has scored tons of runs for Madhya Pradesh in the domestic circuit. "I always observe his (Kohli) batting from back of the nets, especially his footwork and body movement while batting. I try to learn and add these things into my batting," Patidar told BCCI.TV referring to the time spent with Kohli in their IPL team Royal Challengers Bangalore. Kohli has opted out of the first two Tests owing to personal reasons. "It is not easy but I am relentlessly after it," Patidar said about his pursuit of excellence. The right-hander from Indore also revealed that sharing the dressing room with chief coach Rahul Dravid and ..
