Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday said the commissioning of three frontline naval combatants will strengthen India's efforts towards being a global leader in defence and augment its quest towards self-reliance. Modi will dedicate the three combatants -- INS Surat, INS Nilgiri and INS Vaghsheer -- to the nation on their commissioning at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on Wednesday. "Tomorrow, 15th January, is going to be a special day as far as our naval capacities are concerned," he said on X. L&T launches second multi-purpose vessel for Navy from Kattupalli shipyard

Infrastructure major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has launched the second multi-purpose vessel for the Indian Navy from its Kattupalli Shipyard near Chennai. The launch of the vessel, christened INS Utkarsh, comes within three months of the launch of the first MPV INS Samarthak. The first vessel is being readied for undergoing tests and trials prior to its delivery to the Indian Navy, L&T said in a statement on Tuesday. The multi-purpose vessels (MPVs) are highly specialised and play multiple roles, including serving as trial platforms, for the development of next generation weapons and sensors. They will perform maritime surveillance, humanitarian assistance, combat sea pollution, besides taking up launch and recovery of surface and aerial assets, etc. The design engineering of the MPVs has been undertaken at L&T's in-house warship design centre at Chennai and the construction is accomplished at the company's Katupalli Shipyard. 2025 to be year of reforms, aim is to boost modernisation: Defence ministry

The Defence Ministry on Wednesday declared 2025 as the year of reforms and that the aim will be to facilitate establishment of integrated theatre commands to bolster jointness among the three services. The reform measures would be rolled out to transform the armed forces into a technologically-advanced combat-ready force capable of multi-domain integrated operations, it said. The ministry said the focus in 2025 will be on new domains such as cyber and space, emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, hypersonic and robotics. "'Year of Reforms' will be a momentous step in the modernisation journey of the armed forces," Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said. Navy to commission 2 indigenous frontline warships, 1 submarine on Jan 15

The Indian Navy will commission two indigenously constructed frontline warships and a diesel-electric submarine on January 15 that is expected to significantly enhance the force's overall combat prowess. All the three platforms -- guided-missile destroyer Surat, stealth frigate Nilgiri and submarine Vagsheer -- are equipped with the latest weapons and sensors, officials said on Wednesday. The warships and submarine will be commissioned at a ceremony at the naval dockyard in Mumbai. The two warships also include specific accommodations to support a sizeable complement of women officers and sailors, aligning with the Indian Navy's steps toward gender inclusion in frontline combat roles. "This historic event will provide a significant boost to the Indian Navy's combat potential while underscoring the country's pre-eminent status in indigenous shipbuilding," an official readout said. MDL delivers stealth frigate INS Nilgiri, warship INS Surat to Indian Navy

The Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) on Friday delivered the first stealth frigate of Project 17A class and the fourth stealth destroyer of Project 15B Class to the Indian Navy. As per an official statement, the stealth frigate will be named INS Nilgiri, and the missile destroyer will be called INS Surat after commissioning. The warships will now undergo sea trials. The Navy's Warship Design Bureau designed the warships, built by the MDL and overseen by the Warship Overseeing Team, Mumbai. The MDL said Nilgiri, the first of class (FoC) ship of Project 17A, features cutting-edge advanced technology and is comparable to the finest ships of similar class anywhere in the world.
