Russia probe head Mueller to make statement Wednesday

Long-silent Special Counsel Robert Mueller will deliver his first public statement on the Russia meddling investigation on Wednesday, as he faces pressure to testify in Congress on his explosive findings. Mueller, whose probe implicated President Donald Trump in acts of obstruction of justice, will make the statement at the Justice Department at 11 am (1500 GMT) but take no questions, the department said.

Ballia: Cops, officials injured as villagers clashed with police

Enraged by construction on government land, a group of villagers clashed with police and resorted to stone-pelting in Ballia, injuring several cops and officials."One group was engaged in construction on the government land while the other group was opposing it. Police tried to dissuade the group from construction but the group started pelting stones," said Ashwani Srivastav, Sub Divisional Magistrate of Ballia.Several officials, including Tehsildar, inspectors and constables, got severely injured in the incident.The situation was brought under control after cops lathi-charged and fired in the air to disperse the crowd.No arrests have been made so far.

Saradha scam case: CBI questions Kolkata Police officer Arnab Ghosh

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday began questioning senior Kolkata Police officer Arnab Ghosh in connection with Saradha chit fund scam case.The agency had summoned Ghosh, then Deputy Commissioner (Detective Department) of Bidhannagar Commissionerate, and another senior police official Dilip Hazra late Tuesday evening for questioning at its Kolkata office today.Hazra did not appear before the CBI.The agency had said on Tuesday that no second notice has been issued to former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar, who is accused of tampering with evidence in the case.Kumar, who had failed to appear before the CBI on Monday, had written a letter to the agency saying he is on leave.The agency will take the next course of action accordingly, CBI sources had said.The multi-crore scam had caused the collapse of a Ponzi scheme run by the Saradha group. The scandal allegedly involved several leaders from the Trinamool Congress.

Lawyer's arrest conspiracy to defame Hindus: Right-wing bodies

Denouncing the arrest of a lawyer representing some of the accused in the rationalist Narendra Dabholkar murder case, right-wing organisations Wednesday alleged that there was a "sinister conspiracy" to defame Hindus. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had Saturday arrested lawyer Sanjeev Punalekar along with Vikram Bhave, a member of the right-wing organisation Sanatan Sanstha. Representatives of various Hindutva organisations, including the Sanatan Sanstha and the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, Wednesday held a press conference here to express their solidarity with the arrested accused. Pakistani businessman freed on 15mn pound bail in UK

A Pakistani businessman fighting his extradition to the US from London on fraud charges has been released on a 15-million pound bail bond, the largest of its kind ordered by a UK court. Arif Naqvi, who had been lodged at Wandsworth prison in south-west London the same prison as fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi, was released on bail after Westminster Magistrates' Court sent a release letter to the prison authorities on Tuesday. "All conditions set for the bail have been met," a court official confirmed on Wednesday. Naqvi, the founder of Dubai-based private equity firm Abraaj Group, had been granted conditional bail on May 3 but was released only this week as his legal team assembled the required security bond. Bovine smuggling bid foiled in J-K, 21 animals rescued

An suspected bovine smuggler was arrested Wednesday as police foiled separate attempts of cattle smuggling and rescued 21 animals in Samba and Kathua districts of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. Makhan Din, a resident of Balole Khad village, was arrested at Bari Brahmana in Samba district when his load carrier was intercepted and four bovines, which were tied with ropes in a "very cruel manner and transported without any permission", were rescued, a police official said. He said 17 bovine animals were rescued from two trucks which were intercepted at Sanjhi Morh in Kathua district. However, the drivers fled after abandoning the vehicles, the official said. He said separate cases under relevant sections of the law were registered in all the three cases and further investigation is on.

UP hooch tragedy: Toll rises to 15; main accused arrested

The toll in the Barabanki hooch tragedy in Uttar Pradesh rose to 15 Wednesday, even as the main accused who ran the licensed liquor shop was arrested, officials said. The latest death was reported from the trauma centre of King George Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, they said. The incident had prompted the Yogi Adityanath government to order a high-level probe into all the angles, including the possibility of a "political conspiracy". KGMU trauma centre in-charge Sandeep Tiwari told PTI in Lucknow, "Late on Tuesday night, one patient Maniram (50) died." So far, 47 patients have been brought to the trauma centre and three of them, including Maniram, have died. Cop beats up woman in MP; clip goes viral

A 45-year-old woman was allegedly dragged and beaten up by a lower-rung police officer for 'opposing' a road construction work in Madhya Pradesh's Damoh district. After video of the incident went viral on social media, the district superintendent of police has ordered a probe into the incident allegedly involving a woman sub-inspector (SI) of police. "I have asked Tendukheda area Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Ashok Chourasia to inquire into the incident. Action would be taken accordingly as per a probe report," said district SP Vivek Kumar Singh. Delhi court allows Tharoor to travel abroad

A Delhi court Wednesday allowed Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, accused in a case related to his wife Sunanda Pushkar's death, to travel abroad. Special Judge Arun Bhardwaj granted permission to Tharoor to go to the United Kingdom and France from June 2 to July 1. In his application, Tharoor claimed he has to attend and speak at different events there. "The applicant has to travel to United Kingdom and France as he has been invited to speak at different events, scheduled to be held from June 2 to July 1. SC extends tenure of NCDRC's judicial member by one year

The Supreme Court Wednesday extended the tenure of Justice V K Jain, a judicial member of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC), which was expiring today. A vacation bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Aniruddha Bose said the extension of tenure would be for one year or till the process of fresh appointment is completed. "On due consideration, we grant extension of time by one year or till the process of fresh appointment is completed, whichever is earlier," the bench said in its order. The bench was dealing with an application seeking extension of Justice Jain's tenure which is expiring today. Justice Jain was appointed as a judicial member of the NCDRC on May 30, 2014. He had joined the Delhi Judicial Service on May 20, 1977 and was later appointed as a judge of the Delhi High Court on May 14, 2009. He had demitted the office on May 14, 2014 after which he was appointed as a judicial member of the NCDRC.

SC agrees to examine power of tax authorities to arrest individuals for GST evasion

The Supreme Court agreed Wednesday to examine the powers of tax authorities to arrest an individual for GST evasion saying that different high courts have taken divergent views on the issue and it was necessary to clarify the position in law. A vacation bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Aniruddha Bose issued notice on the Centre's plea against the Bombay High Court verdict which had granted protection from arrest to certain individuals in the Goods and Services Tax evasion cases. "Issue notice returnable in four weeks. As different High Courts of the country have taken divergent views in the matter, we are of the view that the position in law should be clarified by this court. Hence, the notice," the bench said. Man involved in several robbery cases arrested after an exchange of fire in northeast Delhi

A man involved allegedly in several dacoity and robbery cases was arrested after an exchange of fire near the Khajuri flyover in northeast Delhi, police said Wednesday. The accused has been identified as Rohtash Chauhan - a resident of Mukund Vihar in Karawal Nagar. According to the police, among others, the accused was involved in 2011 dacoity at Muthoot Finance and another case of robbery at Sunlight Colony.
