ED approaches Delhi HC opposing anticipatory bail to Robert Vadra

The Enforcement Directorate on Friday knocked the doors of the Delhi High Court seeking to set aside a trial court order granting anticipatory bail to businessman Robert Vadra in a money laundering case against him.The petition filed by Public Prosecutor (SPP) DP Singh is likely to be taken up on May 27.The agency, through its plea, is pushing for the custodial interrogation of Vadra, the son-in-law of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. The ED has claimed that Vadra has been evasive during the investigation."...In all likelihood, the respondent (Vadra) is likely to tamper with the evidence and the witness in the case. Special Judge has failed to appreciate that the respondent is a highly influential person. Harvey Weinstein reaches USD 44 million settlement to resolve lawsuits

American film producer Harvey Weinstein has reached a tentative USD 44 million settlement to resolve lawsuits filed by women who accused him of sexual misconduct.According to The New York Times, as cited by The Hollywood Reporter, the lawyers representing Weinstein had agreed a proposed USD 44 million settlement with his accusers. The movie mogul has also reached a tentative deal with creditors of his former studio The Weinstein Co. (TWC) and the New York attorney general.Under the settlement, that is yet to be finalised, USD 30 million would be reserved for the accusers, unsecured creditors, and the former TWC employees. SC dismisses plea of ex-Kolkata CP Rajeev Kumar seeking extension of protection from arrest

The Supreme Court Friday dismissed a plea of former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar seeking extension of protection from arrest in the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam case. Kumar was earlier granted protection from arrest by the apex court for seven days which ends today. A vacation bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra said Kumar can approach the Calcutta High Court or the trial court there for seeking relief. At the outset, the bench told Kumar's counsel that a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi had already passed an order in the matter and later the CJI had also declined urgent listing of an application filed by the IPS officer seeking extension of protection from arrest. "Is it maintainable (the writ petition)? You can go to the high court or the trial court a the courts are functional there," the bench told advocate Sunil Fernandes, who was representing Kumar. 4 new SC judges sworn in, court attains full strength

Four new Supreme Court judges were sworn in on Friday, raising the number of judges to the full sanctioned strength of 31.Justices Aniruddha Bose, AS Bopanna, Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai and Surya Kant were administered the oath of office by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi.With this, the apex court attained its approved total strength of 31 judges.The five-member Collegium, headed by Justice Gogoi, had earlier this month overruled the Centre's objection to the appointment of Justice Bose of the Jharkhand High Court and Justice Bopanna of the Gauhati High Court.The Collegium had recommended the names of Justices Bose and Bopanna on April 12. The Centre had, however, objected to their elevation citing seniority and representation of regions as the reasons.

Juvenile apprehended for killing gym trainer in Delhi's Najafgarh

A juvenile was apprehended in connection with the killing of a 27-year-old gym trainer in Dwarka's Najafgarh earlier this week, police said Friday. The 17-year-old accused, a resident of Najafgarh, was apprehended at around 4:10 pm on Thursday from Dhulsiras Mor near Village Dhulsiras, Dwarka, they said. Mohit More, a resident of Bahadurgarh, was shot dead on Tuesday. He was active on a social-networking app and had lakhs of followers. Police suspect personal enmity to be the reason behind the killing. Three men, of which two were wearing helmets, opened fire at More who had come to a photostat shop to meet a friend. "During interrogation, the juvenile revealed that he was one of the three assailants who shot dead the gym trainer," Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), said. One country-made pistol and two live cartridges were recovered from his possession, the DCP said. Further details are awaited.

Man elopes with woman in UP, her family sets his house on fire

A 26-year-old man eloped with a woman here following which her family members allegedly set his house as well as that of his uncle on fire, police said Friday. The incident took place Thursday and 10 people, including four women, were booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 436 that deals with mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy house, etc, Station House Officer (SHO), Miranpur, Pankaj Tyagi said. One of the accused has also been arrested, he said. Trouble started after the man eloped with the 20-year-old woman from Rasulpur Ghari village in the district three days ago, after being in a relationship for some months. The woman's family members lodged a police complaint after which the couple was tracked. The man's family and his uncle left their houses due to prevailing tension, police said. Australian horse racing industry rocked by drug arrest

Australia's horse racing industry was reeling Friday after a high-profile owner was charged with being part of a syndicate smuggling cocaine on commercial flights from South Africa. Damion Flower, a regular fixture at Sydney's racetracks, was arrested at his home in the city on Wednesday. An airport baggage handler was also arrested. Both have been charged with six counts of importing a commercial quality of drugs. A nother man linked to the plot was seized last month. If convicted, they face life in jail. Four new judges of the Supreme Court were on Friday administered the oath of office by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi. With the swearing in of four judges, the number of judges in the Supreme Court stands at 31, the full sanctioned strength of the top court. Florida executes serial killer, 35 years after crimes

A serial killer was put to death on Thursday in the US state of Florida, 35 years after he raped and killed at least eight young women in the Tampa Bay region. Robert "Bobby" Long, 65, was executed at the Florida State Prison in Raiford, the state's Department of Corrections said. "The execution took place without incident," Michelle Glady, the department's director of communications, said in a statement. He was sentenced to death in September 1985 for killing a woman the year before. A years-long lawsuit between Michael Jackson's estate and one of the superstar's former managers has been settled, ending one of the final legal fights over the King of Pop's assets. The confidential settlement announced Thursday with Tohme R Tohme, Jackson's manager in the last year of his life, was reached after a trial had been underway for five days. It comes a month short of the 10th anniversary of Jackson's death. A journalist was allegedly slapped Thursday by PWP leader and MLC Jayant Patil at an election counting centre in Alibaug in Raigad district of Maharashtra. Patil is the general secretary of the Peasants and Workers Party (PWP), which has a strong base in Raigad district. Bank CEO charged with trying to trade loans for Trump post

Federal prosecutors have charged a banker with trying to buy himself a role in President Donald Trump's administration by making risky loans to former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort. Stephen M Calk was arrested Thursday in New York City on a financial institution bribery charge. He is scheduled to appear in Manhattan federal court in the afternoon. A message seeking comment was left with his attorney. Authorities said Calk committed the crime while serving as CEO of The Federal Savings Bank in Chicago. Lawyer attacks judge in Pakistan, gets 18 years in jail

A Pakistani court, in a first of its kind verdict in the recent history, Thursday sentenced a lawyer to over 18 years in jail for injuring a judge by throwing a chair at him during the hearing of a case in Faislabad. The Faislabad anti-terrorism court sent Advocate Imran Manj in prison for 18-and-a-half-years and also slapped a fine of Rs 25,000 on him for attacking the judge. Manj had on April 25 thrown a chair at Civil Judge Khalid Mahmood Waraiach during the hearing of a case in the Jaranwala district court in Faislabad, about 150 kms from here. The judge suffered injuries in the attack. Following the attack, the judges also boycotted work in protest against the attack and demanded action against the lawyer. The Punjab Bar Council has also cancelled the lawyer's licence.

Four new SC judges to take oath of office on Friday

Four new judges of the Supreme Court will take oath of office on Friday, raising their number to 31, the full sanctioned strength. As per a circular issued by the apex court, Justices B R Gavai, Surya Kant, Aniruddha Bose and A S Bopanna will be administered oath of office by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi at 10.30 am on Friday in court number one of the Supreme Court. The apex court will have its full strength of judges for the first time since 2008 when Parliament had increased the number of judges from 26 to 31. As of now, the apex court is functioning with 27 judges, including the CJI. On Wednesday, President Ram Nath Kovind had issued warrants of appointment of Justices Gavai, Surya Kant, Bose and Bopanna as apex court judges. The names of Justices Bose and Bopanna were earlier returned by the Centre to the Supreme Court collegium citing seniority and representation of regions as the reasons.
