Woman's kin booked for threatening her over inter-caste affair

A case has been registered against three relatives of a 19-year-old female law student, who had approached the Bombay High Court alleging threat to life due to her relationship with a man belonging to another caste, an official said on Friday. The Talegaon MIDC police registered a case on Thursday, two days after the high court directed the police to look into the complaint of Priyanka Shete and take appropriate steps to ensure her safety. According to the police, a case against her paternal uncle Dattatray Bandu Shete, and two cousins- Ravi Nivrutti Shete and Sampat Dnyaneshwar Shete- was registered under IPC sections 344 (wrongful confinement), 352 (assault or criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 507 (criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication). Shete, a second year law student, had stated in her petition that while she belonged to the Maratha community, she was in love with her .

Official sentenced to 4 years RI for misappropriation of funds

A CBI court here sentenced a state-owned insurance company official to four years rigorous imprisonment for misappropriation of funds. CBI Special Judge Imtiaz Ali also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on Debabrata Ray, who was working as an administrative officer in the insurer's Hojai branch. The CBI's anti-corruption Branch, Guwahati, had registered a criminal case against Ray in April 2015 following allegations of preparing false and fabricated vouchers, and misappropriating funds to the tune of over Rs 3.30 lakh.

SC reserves judgment on contempt petition against Rahul Gandhi

The Supreme Court on Friday reserved its judgment on the contempt petition filed by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi against Congress president Rahul Gandhi for attributing his 'Chowkidar chor hai' comment to the apex court.Gandhi on Wednesday tendered an unconditional apology to the Supreme Court for wrongly attributing his "chowkidar chor hai" remark to the apex court and sought closure of the contempt proceedings against him.In a three-page affidavit, Gandhi said he holds the court in "highest esteem and respect" and "has never sought or intended to, directly or indirectly, commit any act that interferes with the process of administration of justice".The Congress chief pleaded that the court may "accept the instant affidavit and close the present contempt proceedings".On April 30, a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi was categorical that Gandhi had to either offer a clear-cut apology or face criminal contempt for attributing the remark "chowkidar chor hai", targeting Prime Minister ..

SC stays disqualification proceedings against third AIADMK MLA

The Supreme Court on Friday stayed disqualification proceedings against an AIADMK MLA who was served notices by the Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker for allegedly indulging in "anti-party" activities, days after it gave similar relief to two other party legislators. A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjiv Khanna o issued notice on a petition filed by MLA A Prabhu and posted the matter for further hearing on July 12. "There shall be stay of further proceedings in notice.... dated April 29, 2019 on the petition for disqualification filed under the Tenth Schedule initiated by respondent no. one (Assembly speaker) against the petitioner (Prabhu)," the bench said in its order. Man shot dead while trying to rob toll plaza cash van

A 22-year-old man died on Friday in southeast Delhi's Pul Pehlad Pur after being shot while allegedly trying to rob a cash van containing money collected from MCD toll plazas, police said. Chimoy Biswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast), said, "Police received information regarding firing at a signal in Pul Pehlad Pur area on Friday at around 10.50 am". After reaching the spot, blood splatter along with chilli powder was found on the road. A cash van was also found there, police said. During initial investigation, Rao Saheb Ramesh, cashier of MEP infra Developers, told police that he had collected around Rs 14 lakh from Badarpur Border toll plaza and kept it in the van and departed for the head office at Vasant Kunj, Biswal said. In the meantime, at around 10.45 am near Pul Pehlad Pur traffic signal, an unidentified person entered into the van from the rear by opening the door and tried to rob the cash bag, he said. SC refers to larger bench issue of summoning additional accused after pronouncing verdict

The Supreme Court Friday referred to a larger bench the issue of whether a lower court has the power to summon additional accused even after having decided a criminal case against the others involved. A bench of Justices N V Ramana and Mohan M Shantanagoudar framed three questions of law on the scope and ambit of section 319 (power to proceed against other persons appearing to be guilty of offence) of CrPC and referred the matter to the registry to place it before the Chief Justice of India for constituting a larger bench to adjudicate these issues. The three issued framed by the bench include, whether the trial court has the power under section 319 of CrPC for summoning additional accused when trial with respect to other co-accused has ended and the verdict of conviction rendered on the same date before pronouncing the summoning order. Worker died after falling in rice mill tank in Gadchiroli

A rice mill worker Friday died after he fell into a tank in Nainpur village of Gadchiroli district, police said. API Rupali Bawankur of Desaiganj police station identified the deceased as Vinod Meshra (35), a resident of Hardoli Brahmapuri in Chandrapur district. "The incident happened at 2:15pm in the Tirupati Rice Mill in Nainpur. Meshram fell into a paddy tank and died. We have registered an accidental death case," the API said.

NGT asks UPPCB to fine private company Rs 30 lakhs for illegal plant

National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Friday directed the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) to recover 30 lakhs from Envirad Private Limited for illegally operating a common biomedical treatment plant in Bareilly city of Uttar Pradesh.Chairman of NGT Justice RS Rathore, while posting the matter to May 24, directed the Central Pollution Control Board and Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board to form a team to conduct a joint inspection in the plant.Petition in this regard was filed by Sanjay Kumar, through advocate Gaurav Kumar Bansal.On April 12, NGT had issued a notice to the UPPCB directing it to report to the tribunal on its actions taken against the Common Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Plant (CBMWTP) operating illegally in the state.On January 30, NGT had directed the state pollution control board to take action against the CBMWTP if it was still running without permission.Advocate Bansal had then told the court that CBMWTP has to take No Objection Certificate (NOC) from ...

BJP raising Monserratte's criminal cases fearing defeat:

Goa Congress chief Girish Chodankar Friday said the BJP was raising the issue of criminal cases against his party colleague and Panaji Assembly bypoll candidate Atanasio Monserratte as the ruling party could sense poll defeat. Monserratte was booked for raping a girl in 2016 and also has other criminal cases registered against his name. The Panaji bypoll is slated for May 19 and Monserratte is pitted against BJP's Siddharth Kunkolienkar. "We had asked questions on the corruption in smart city project and also failure of the BJP to govern the constituency for last 25 years. But those questions are not being answered," Chodankar said. AG sought external members in SC probe panel in CJI case

CBI is unlikely to oppose the plea of Indrani Mukerjea to turn an approver in the INX media case against accused Karthi Chidambaram, agency sources indicated on Friday.Last year, Mukerjea, the former head of INX media, gave her confessional statement in a Delhi court in connection with the INX Media case and later sent an informal letter willing to turn an approver in the matter.The matter is slated to be heard on May 23.Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram and son Karti are accused in the INX Media case.The Enforcement Directorate (ED) and CBI are probing how Karti managed to obtain clearance to the tune of Rs 305 crore from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) in 2007 when his father was the finance minister.The ED had registered a PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) case based on FIR by the CBI and alleged that irregularities took place in the FIPB clearance to INX Media for receiving overseas funds to the tune of Rs 305 crore in 2007 when Chidambaram was the Union .

Gold worth Rs 38.4 lakh seized from air passengers

: Nearly 1.17 kg of gold worth Rs 38.4 lakh smuggled into the country by air passengers in multiple cases has been seized, Customs officials said Friday. In the first incident Friday, 313 gm of the precious metal valued at Rs 10.29 lakh was recovered from a 23-year-old passenger who arrived here from Kuala Lumpur. He had concealed the gold in his rectum, an official press release said. In the second incident May 9, two passengers who arrived from Kuala Lumpur were checked and three cylindrical gold rods were found concealed in their rectums. The gold weighed 618 gm worth Rs 20.30 lakh, the release said. Two women passengers, hailing from Tiruchirappalli and arriving here from Colombo, were intercepted on suspicion and were found to be carrying 238 gm valued at Rs 7.81 lakh in their rectum, it said. Totally, 1.17 gm of gold worth Rs 38.4 lakh was seized under the provisions of Customs Act, 1962 and further investigation was on, it added.

Madrassa teacher who thrashed minor girl with belt arrested

A religious teacher, who was booked for allegedly thrashing a six-year-old girl with a belt at a madrassa here for not being able to learn her lessons, was arrested Friday, police said. A complaint was lodged at the sector 49 police station here against maulvi Mohammad Nawaz by the minor girl's father a couple of days ago, they said. "Nawaz, who taught at the madrassa in Sector 115, had gone absconding since police began the probe. He had come to the madrassa this afternoon where we nabbed him after a tip-off," SHO Ajay Aggarwal said. "The teacher told police that he has always been careful while dealing with the students but the child seemed not to be learning her lessons and that irked him to the extent that he thrashed her with a belt," he said. Govt staff among 64 land jobs with fake marksheets: Plaint

A police case has been registered against 64 people, including some government officials, for landinggovernment jobs allegedly on the basis of fake marksheets of the Industrial Training and Employment Department (ITED). The case was registered under various sections of the IPC pertaining to creating bogus documents, cheating and collusion, based on a complaint by ITED joint director B L Chandrashekara. In his complaint, the joint director said various departments had sent the marksheets and pass certificates to the ITED to verify their authenticity. Accordingly, the department formed a committee to look into the issue and a report. It stated that while many of them had undertaken training at the Industrial Training Institutes (ITI), some others allegedly created fake marks card to show they'd passed the exam. Defamation complaint filed against Manoj Tiwari for calling slapping of Arvind Kejriwal staged

An AAP volunteer has filed a criminal defamation complaint against BJP's Lok Sabha candidate Manoj Tiwari and spokesperson Harish Khurana for allegedly defaming him as one who assaulted Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal during a poll rally. Doctor gets bail in minor's molestation case

A special court here has granted bail to an elderly doctor from suburban Bandra, accused of molesting his neighbour's 14-year-old daughter. Special POCSO judge S J Gharat recently granted bail to the 63-year-old doctor, Kumar Ram Kanuga, in connection with the incident that took place nearly a month ago. According to the prosecution, the victim had gone to the house of the accused, who has been practising medicine for the last 35 years, to collect the keys to her residence, which her mother had kept with him. When she went to his house, the accused molested her and also passed lewd remarks at her, the prosecution told the court. After the girl returned home, she told her mother about her ordeal. Her mother raised the issue with the housing society and also lodged a complaint at the Khar police station and the accused was subsequently arrested. The defence, however, argued in the court that Kanuga was falsely implicated in the case.

Indrani to appear in Delhi court on May 23 in INX Media case

Indrani Mukerjea, the prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder case, will appear before a Delhi court on May 23 where she has moved a plea to turn approver in the INX Media case. Indrani Mukerjea is currently lodged in the Byculla jail here and facing trial in a CBI court for allegedly killing her daughter Sheena. The CBI on Friday moved an application before Judge J C Jagadale requesting him to issue suitable directions to jail authorities for her production in a Delhi court on May 23. The judge said Indrani Mukerjea is required to be present before the court in Delhi as a production warrant is issued against her.
