A 42-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly supplying illegal arms to criminals in Delhi, police said Wednesday. Mohammad Parvez, a resident of Jasola village, was arrested from south Delhi. Two country-made pistols and 10 live cartridges were seized from him, they said. Police said Parvez was previously convicted in a murder case registered at Kalkaji police station. He is being interrogated to trace the source of illegal weapons seized from him.

A nine-month-old girl died after a man apparently gagged her following an alleged rape bid here on Wednesday, police said. The accused, aged around 28, took the baby in the wee hours while she was asleep alongside her parents on the terrace of their house and sexually assaulted her, a senior police officer told PTI. The man, who stays in the same neighbourhood as that of the victim, seems to have gagged her when she started crying, resulting in her death, the officer said. In the meanwhile, the parents of the girl informed the police that their daughter was missing. The police traced the accused, a labourer, and found the baby with him. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, but was declared "brought dead", the officer said. A forest guard was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 in Rajasthan's Sirohi district, an official said. The accused, Raugram, had allegedly demanded a monthly convenience fee of Rs 11,000 from a tractor-trolley owner, Bhanwarlal Lohar, for allowing him to run his business in Pindwara area, Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) DIG Sawai Singh said. Lohar had agreed to pay Rs 5,000 on Wednesday and the rest amount on a later date, he said. After verification of the complaint against Rugaram, a trap was laid and he was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe, Singh said. A case was registered against the forest guard under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, the official added.
The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Maharashtra government on a petition challenging a Bombay High Court order that refused to consider a plea against 16 per cent quota for Marathas in admission to PG medical and dental courses in the state.A vacation bench comprising Justices Deepak Gupta and Surya Kant posted the matter to June 24.The Nagpur bench of the high court had earlier this month declined to entertain a plea against an Ordinance issued by the state government providing 16 per cent reservation for Marathas under the socially and economically backward classes category in admission to postgraduate medical and dental courses.
A two-year-old girl died Wednesday after she was run over by a reversing car outside her house in Telhara in Akola district of Maharashtra, police said. The incident occurred around 7 AM after the girl, Adhira Tikar, ran out on the road where an SUV driver was reversing the vehicle, Telhara police station inspector Vikas Deore said, adding that Tikar came under the wheels of the SUV. She was rushed to the rural hospital where doctors declared her dead. The driver of the SUV is absconding, the officer said, adding that a case of accidental death has been registered. Further investigation is underway.
The Delhi High Court has agreed to hear a PIL seeking an independent CBI probe into the Mukherjee Nagar incident, where the police allegedly assaulted an autorickshaw driver and his minor son.In the petition, Seema Singhal, through advocate Sangeeta Bharti, has sought an independent probe by the CBI or a similar agency into the "brutal attack" on autorickshaw driver Sarabjeet Singh in northeast Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar.Several videos of an altercation between Singh and policemen went viral on social media on Sunday. Five policemen were suspended after the family of a 25-year old man alleged that he was beaten to death by the security personnel in Bhopal, an official said on Wednesday. The car of the deceased, identified as Shivam Mishra, met with an accident in the wee hours of Wednesday in the bus rapid transit (BRT) corridor in Bairagarh area here, Inspector General, Bhopal Zone, Yogesh Deshmukh told PTI. On getting information about the incident, the police reached the spot and took Mishra and his friend to a hospital where the medical test revealed that he was drunk, he said. They said in 2012 he first joined a local branch of the Free Syria Army and shot two prisoners. In 2014, he joined the Islamic State and participated in the mistreatment of three prisoners in Syria. A 28-year-old woman has been arrested in Thane district of Maharashtra for allegedly possessing mephedrone drug worth over Rs 4 lakh, police said on Wednesday. Acting on a tip-off, a police team on Monday night raided a house in Mumbra township where they caught the woman and seized around 197 gm of the prohibited drug from her possession, senior police inspector Madhukar Kad said. The value of the drug, a synthetic stimulant which is also known as 'meow-meow' and 'MD', is estimated to be around Rs 4.33 lakh, he said. The woman, identified as Sayeeda Shaikh, was arrested and booked under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, he said. The police were trying to find out from where the woman got the contraband and to whom she intended to sell it, he added.

Three children were seriously injured in an explosion in a garbage heap in Purbalyan village here, police said Wednesday. The incident took place when the trio was playing near the garbage heap on Tuesday evening in the village which comes under the jurisdiction of Mansur police station, they said. According to preliminary investigation, some powder used for making firecrackers, which was present in the garbage heap, led to the explosion, police said. An American teenager has been charged with conspiring to murder her "best friend" after a man she met online offered her USD 9 million to commit the crime. According to investigators, Denali Brehmer, an 18-year-old from Alaska, was recruited to kill her friend by a man a few years her elder, 21-year-old Darin Schilmiller of Indiana. The pair had previously hooked up online, with Schilmiller assuming a fake identity and posing as a millionaire named "Tyler." Court documents say that during the course of their online relationship, they discussed a plan to rape and murder someone in Alaska. Schilmiller promised Brehmer USD 9 million or more to send him videos or photographs of the macabre attack. Brehmer then proceeded to recruit four friends and the group settled on Cynthia Hoffman -- described as one of Brehmer's best friends -- as their victim.
