6 arrested for copper wire theft at All India Radio's facility in Delhi

Six persons were arrested on Friday in north Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar area for allegedly stealing copper wire from a government-owned facility, police said. Three persons -- Shan Mohamad (24), Shahzad (26) and Abhishek (22) -- were arrested while attempting to steal copper wire at All India Radio High Power Transmission Aerial Field, which is spread over 300 acres, they said. Total 200 kilogram of copper wire was recovered from their possession, police said. Aas Mohamadd (26), a scrap dealer who allegedly bought the stolen wires, was also arrested from east Delhi's GTB Enclave and bundles of copper wires were recovered from him. Two others -- Umed (33) and Akshay (22) -- were later arrested from Hapur after police conducted several raids. Interrogation revealed Umed, a scrap hawker, had found potential in stealing huge amount of copper wires from the facility and earn money, a senior police officer said. JeI ban: UAPT to hold sittings from June 19

The Unlawful Activities Prevention Tribunal (UAPT), constituted by the Centre to decide whether there is sufficient evidence for declaring Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) as an unlawful association, will hold sittings here for three days from June 19. The UAPT will hold sittings at the High Court Complex in Srinagar on June 19, 20 and 21, an official spokesman said here. He said the tribunal is being presided over by Justice Chander Shekhar of the Delhi High Court. Accordingly, all those interested in giving evidence may file their affidavit (in duplicate) with the registrar of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal, Delhi High Court building in New Delhi and shall remain present in person on the aforementioned dates for cross-examination, if any, before the tribunal, the spokesman said. 5 shot dead in Delhi; Kejriwal urges LG, Home Min to look into law and order situation

Five people were shot dead in four different incidents here since Thursday evening, following which Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal raised concern over the city's law and order situation, and urged Lt Governor Anil Baijal and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to look into the issue. Sarpanch arrested taking bribe

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) here Friday arrested the sarpanch of Kela Ka Bas gram panchayat in Jamwa Ramgarh for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 20,000, an official said. The accused, Rohitash Kumar, had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 30,000 from the complainant to recommend his name for the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, an ACB spokesperson said. After verification, a trap was laid and the sarpanch was arrested while taking a bribe of Rs 20,000, the spokesperson said.

Septuagenarian held on molestation charge

A septuagenarian was here arrested for allegedly molesting a five-year-old girl, police said Friday. On the complaint of the girl's father, a case has been registered against accused Netrapal (76) under Section 354 of the IPC and the POCSO Act. SP (City) Shlok Kumar said the accused lured the girl on the pretext of giving her a toffee and allegedly molested her. In the meantime, the girl's father saw it and freed the child from his grip, police said.

Seven arrested for suspected cattle smuggling in J-K; 48 animals rescued

Seven suspected bovine smugglers were arrested and 48 animals rescued from Rajouri and Udhampur districts of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, police said. Three trucks and a pickup vehicle were intercepted at Daber-Nowshera, Thanamandi and Kote behrote areas of Rajouri district and 21 bovines were rescued, they said. Cases were registered against three men, identified as Mohmmad Shabir, Arslan Mustafa and Mohmmad Junaid, in this connection, the officials added. In Udhampur district, a police team intercepted two trucks at the Jakhani area and rescued 27 bovines from these, they said. Four people, identified as Mohmmad Mushtaq, Jamal Din, Hamid Miyan and Mohmmad Haroon, were arrested and separate cases registered against them, the officials said. Body of minor girl, believed to be Indian, found near US-Mexico border

The body of a seven-year-old girl, believed to be Indian, has been found near a remote and deserted US-Mexico border area with authorities in Arizona saying she was a victim of human smuggling. The Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials said on Thursday the girl was part of a group trying to get into the US after human smugglers dropped them off near the Mexico border. Temperatures in the rugged wilderness where agents found her remains Wednesday hovered around 108 degrees. The girl was found dead 27 kilometres west of Lukeville in Arizona state by the US border patrol agents. "Our sympathies are with this little girl and her family. CM orders probe into blackmailing charges against former PCC chief's brother

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has ordered a probe into a complaint that state's senior Congress leader Kishore Upadhaya's younger brother Sachin has duped and threatened his business partner. Rawat ordered the probe by a special investigative team after Sachin's business partner Mukesh Joshi, owning joint venture firm SM Hospitality Pvt Ltd, lodged a complaint with the chief minister. In his complaint, Joshi alleged that the Congress leader's brother has transferred his 50 per cent share in the firm to himself and his wife by forging his signature. Indian arrested in Nepal for possessing narcotic drugs

An Indian national was arrested and 54 kg narcotic drugs recovered from his possession in central Nepal on Friday, police said here. The incident took place at Hetauda city. The 44-year-old man was identified as Sanjaya Mahato, a resident of Bihar's Raxaul district. He was arrested along with his Nepalese accomplice, identified as 28-year-old Rohit Shrestha, police said, adding that 54 kg hemp was recovered from their possession. In a similar incident, police arrested a US national from Tribhuvan International Airport for carrying hashish. The man identified as 46-year-old William Heron was arrested during a security check while he was boarding a Bangkok-bound flight of the Nepal Airlines. Two sisters commit suicide in Odisha's Ganjam district

Two sisters, aged 16 and 12, have allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison in Ganjam district, a police officer said. The girls, Deepa (16) and Lija (12), were daughters of Padmanav Bhuyan, a labourer at Gudiali village in Kabisurya Nagar police station of the district, he said. Lija died on her way to hospital, while Deepa breathed her last at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, Inspector in-Charge Tapan Kumar Pati said. "The police did not find any poisonous substance from the Bhuyan household, but the doctors who conducted a post- mortem suspect that the death was due to consumption of poison," he said. The Odisha police on Friday booked a newly elected BJD MP and his family members on the charge of assaulting and sexually harassing a woman journalist who had gone to his residence to complaint against his brother for passing lewd remarks at her. A cellphone, mobile charger, wire and few tobacco packets were recovered from former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala's prison cell during a surprise check, the Tihar jail authorities said on Friday.The cell houses two more inmates - Surender alias Kaira and Ramesh Sharma alias Dudhiya."In a surprise inspection yesterday at Tihar jail, a cellphone, mobile charger, wire and few tobacco packets were recovered from Chautala's cell," jail officials said.The prison authorities have initiated a probe to ascertain whether the phone was being used by Chautala."During the preliminary enquiry, Ramesh Sharma has stated that the phone and other articles belonged to him. Five police personnel were shot dead by Maoists on Friday while they were patrolling the area here, officials said. Pak lawyers hold nationwide protests as proceedings against senior judges begin in SC

Pakistan's Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) on Friday began examining a government request for the removal of two senior judges for concealing assets abroad amid a nationwide protest by lawyers, who say the duo were being victimised for being "independent-minded". Pakistan President Arif Alvi moved the SJC last month, asking it to take action against Supreme Court Judge Justice Qazi Faez Isa and Justice Karim Khan Agha of the Sindh High Court for allegedly hiding information of their properties in the UK. The SJC is a constitutional body and deals with cases of misconduct against judges of higher courts. Only the SJC can remove a Supreme Court or a High Court judge. The five-member SJC is headed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The other members are four seniormost judges -- two from the apex court and as many from the high courts.
