Facing prison, Manafort asks for leniency in Mueller case

Paul Manafort, the longtime political consultant who once led Donald Trump's presidential campaign, asked a federal judge for leniency Monday as he faces the potential of spending the rest of his life in prison in criminal cases stemming from the Russia investigation. In a new court filing , Manafort's attorneys described the 69-year-old as a victim of circumstance, prosecuted by special counsel Robert Mueller only because the government couldn't make the case that he colluded with the Kremlin's interference in the 2016 presidential election. They also dismissed prosecutors' characterisation of Manafort as a hardened criminal, saying he was merely a wealthy consultant who committed "garden variety" crimes by illegally lobbying for Ukrainian interests and hiding millions from the IRS. Madhya Pradesh: Mutilated body of 15-year-old boy found in Dindori

A 15-year-old boy who went missing was found dead on Sunday near Rajul Colony in Dindori district. The body of the minor was recovered in pieces.ML Solanki, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dindori said, "The boy went out on February 20 to buy something. Newly-constituted bench of SC to hear Ayodhya case today

A newly-constituted five-judge bench of the Supreme Court will hear the title suit of the Ayodhya case on Tuesday. The hearing was earlier delayed as Justice SA Bobde, who is a part of the five-judge Constitution bench, was on leave.The apex court, on January 25, constituted a five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and comprising Justice Ashok Bhushan, Justice Abdul Nazeer, Justice SA Bobde and Justice DY Chandrachud to hear the Ayodhya case. The top court was scheduled to hear the case on January 29.However, hearing was cancelled due to the unavailability of Justice Bobde. Delhi court issues production warrant against Gautam Khaitan in AgustaWestland case

A Delhi court Tuesday issued a production warrant against lawyer Gautam Khaitan, who is an accused in the Rs 3,600-crore AgustaWestland VVIP chopper case. Special Judge Arvind Kumar issued his production warrant and posted the matter for hearing on May 9. Khaitan had been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the CBI a few years ago in connection with their probe but was granted bail in the case.

SC commences hearing on Ram-Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute case

The Supreme Court Tuesday commenced hearing on the politically sensitive Ram-Janmabhoomi Babri Masjid land dispute matter. A five-judge constitution bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices S A Bobde, D Y Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and S Abdul Nazeer is hearing the matter. Fourteen appeals have been filed in the apex court against the 2010 Allahabad High Court judgment, delivered in four civil suits, that the 2.77-acre land in Ayodhya be partitioned equally among the three parties -- the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla.

Decide on Charles Sobhraj's jail waiver in three months: Nepal SC tells govt

Nepal's Supreme Court has directed its government to decide on the jail waiver for notorious 'Bikini killer' Charles Sobhraj, who is currently serving a life sentence in the Himalayan nation since 2003 on account of murder.A bench of Justices Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada and Bam Kumar Shrestha, on Sunday, directed the government to take the decision within three months responding to the writ filed by murder convict Sobhraj last November.In Sobhraj's petition, the serial killer, who's now 74 years old, has demanded a 75 per cent waiver on his jail term.The Senior Citizen Act of Nepal has a provision of waiver on sentence for senior citizens. However, the act says that senior citizens, who are 70 years old but are yet to turn 75 years old, can get clemency not exceeding 50 per cent of their jail sentence.Another provision states that a court may, after factoring in the gravity of offence, choose to send a jail inmate having completed the age of 75 years to a care center. Cardinal George Pell, the third-ranking official in the Vatican, has been found guilty of child sex crimes in Australia, becoming the most senior Catholic cleric ever convicted for child sexual abuse, court officials reported Tuesday. Pell, 77, was found guilty by a trial jury in December of sexually assaulting two choirboys in the sacristy of Melbourne's Saint Patrick's Cathedral in the 1990s. The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested Detective Inspector of Hayatnagar police station in Rachakonda Commissionerate allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 30, 000.The Detective Inspector, who has been identified as Jitender Reddy, was caught by the ACB on Monday afternoon while accepting a bribe from one Rekha Sagar to settle an issue with respect to the complaint lodged against Rekha's brother-in-law, Nagaraju.The bribe was recovered from the possession of the accused officer. Teenager held for raping minor girl

A three-year-old girl was allegedly raped Monday by a 15-year-old youth at Barondha village in Madhya Pradesh's Satna district, police said. The incident occurred this morning when the accused, a student of class 8, allegedly lured the victim under some pretext to an agriculture field and raped her, a police officer said. The girl later narrated the incident to her mother, said Barondha police station sub-inspector Anandilal Shukla. He said efforts were made by the local panchayat to settle the matter between the families of the accused and the victim. However, police were informed, following which the girl was admitted in a government hospital, he said. The accused teenager was detained on the charges of rape and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from the Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), the official said, adding that he will be produced before a competent court Tuesday.

2 arrested for reporting false cases in Gr Noida

Two persons were arrested in Greater Noida on Monday for allegedly reporting false cases of car robbery and kidnapping at the emergency 100 number of police, officials said. The accused, Pankaj, on February 23 informed police about a car robbery, but on probe it turned out that he had lied about the incident, a police said. In the other incident, the accused, Ajay Kumar, on February 24 gave a tip-off to police about kidnapping, but his claim too turned out to be false, the official said. "Both the accused were arrested on Monday for reporting false cases on emergency number 100," he said.

Kodanad: HC reserves order in plea against cancelling bail

The Madras High Court on Monday reserved its verdict on a plea by two key accused in the Kodanad heist case, seeking quashing of a lower court's order cancelling their bail. Justice G K Ilanthiraiyan reserved order after hearing arguments. Nilgiris District Judge P Vadamalai, on February 8, cancelled the bail of the two prime accused - K V Sayan and K C Manoj - after the prosecution petitioned that the duo made public statements about the case and were hampering investigation and intimidating witnesses. Aggrieved, the two men moved the high court seeking quashing of the strict judge's order. At the Kodanad estate in Nilgiris district, which was used by former chief minister J Jayalalithaa for both official and residential purposes, a guard was found dead on April 23, 2017 in an alleged robbery attempt. Later, police arrested 10 people, including Sayan and Manoj. In January this year, Manoj and Sayan alleged the involvement of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami in the heist case

Man befriends woman on Facebook, rapes her: police

A 28-year-old man befriended a 45-year-old woman on Facebook by posing as an occultist and allegedly raped her in Shahdara's Farsh Bazar, a police official said Monday. According to the official, the woman and the man became friends on the social networking site in June 2018. The woman told him she had personal issues and the man claimed he was an occultist. He told her he will help her find a solution to her problems through witchcraft, a official said. Later the man became friends with her husband started visiting their home, the official said. After nine months, the woman filed a case of rape against the man. She alleged the man raped her on his second visit to the residence. The man has been absconding, the officer said.

HC declines to discharge DMK MLA from extortion case

The Madras High Court on Monday declined to discharge DMK legislator J Anbazhagan from an extortion case registered by police. Dismissing a plea moved by Anbazhagan, Justice P Velmurugan directed the MLA to contest the case before the trial court. According to Anbazhagan, on July 28, 2011, the Tirupur CB-CID police had registered an FIR against him and seven others for alleged extortion and attempt to grab a land owned by a Tirupur-based businessman by forging property documents. The FIR was registered under various Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections, including 342 (wrongful confinement), 387 (extortion), 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating). The petitioner had submitted that the offence was allegedly committed in 2008, whereas the complaint was lodged only in 2011, after a delay of three years.
