US judge to climb Statue of Liberty before sentencing protester

A US federal judge has received permission to climb the Statue of Liberty before sentencing the protester who illegally scrambled up the iconic monument last year. US Judge Gabriel Gorenstein is handling the case of Therese Patricia Okoumou, who was found guilty in December of misdemeanor charges for climbing up to the base of the iconic statue to protest US immigration policies on July 4 -- US independence day -- 2018. Okoumou, a New York resident of Congolese descent, said she was moved by the separation of families on the US-Mexico border, and climbed the monument following a protest calling for the disbanding of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) law enforcement agency. Okoumou's action made headline news, with news helicopters hovering for hours as New York city cops and US Park Police struggled to pull her down. Ganja worth Rs 2.71 crore seized

A total of 1,813 kg of ganja, worth about Rs 2.71 crore, has been seized by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials from a van here The van driver has been taken into custody, the DRI said in a release here. The agency said that DRI officials here, acting on specific intelligence that narcotic drugs were being illegally transported, interecepted the van on the Chennai-Kolkotta Highway and seized the ganja. The ganja was found packed in 361 brown packets, each weighing about 5 kg, the DRI said in a release. The contraband was reportedly brought from the Agency area and was destined for Raipur in Chattisgarh. The vehicle used to transport the contraband was also seized, the DRI said.

Man kills 6-yr-old son in Rohini due to financial trouble

A man allegedly strangulated his six-year-old son to death at his rented accommodation in Rohini on Saturday and claimed that he did it due to financial trouble, police said. The accused, Vinod (46), used to work as a salesman for a dairy product distributor and had lost his job after the shop shut down. His wife died of cancer in 2017, they said. On Saturday morning, Vinod rushed to his landlord residing on the ground floor of the building and informed him that he has strangulated his son to death since he was unable to meet the expenses owing to financial constraints, a senior police officer said. After informing the landlord he rushed back to his room on the second floor and locked himself, he said. The landlord informed the neighbours and Vijay Vihar police station officials at 11.10 am, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) S D Mishra said. 12 kg morphine seized, 2 held

Two men were arrested and a large quantity of morphine worth about Rs 40 crore in the international market was seized from their possession in the Safdarganj area here Saturday, police said. Nafees and Furkan were nabbed from Zaidpur-Safdarganj road in Sai Kayasthana village after 12 kilograms of morphine were seized from them, Superintendent of Police Satish Kumar said. The duo told police that they used to smuggle narcotics, he said. A hunt has been launched to nab others involved in the smuggling of narcotics with them, Kumar said.

Delhi court to take up bail pleas of corporate lobbyist Deepak Talwar on March 2

A Delhi court Saturday said that it will take up on March 2 the hearing on all bail applications of corporate lobbyist Deepak Talwar, arrested in a money laundering case. Special Judge Santosh Snehi Mann adjourned the hearing, saying Saturday's hearing was not to decide the merits of the case but whether to pass an order on the pleas, given the matter is pending before the Delhi High Court. The court fixed the matter for March 2, saying that in the meantime, the high court could pronounce its order. "I will take it up on March 2. Let me have the time. In the meantime, there will be some order from the high court. He is already in custody. He is not running away," the judge said. "Today was not the day for deciding any application on merit. Courier man assaults two women after Hindi-Marathi spat: Cops

A 28-year-old man working with a courier firm was arrested for allegedly assaulting two sisters with a ballpoint pen in Dadar after they reportedly asked him to speak in Marathi, police said Saturday. According to police, the incident took place in Shivaji Park area of Dadar on Friday when the accused, Ibrahim Shaikh, had gone to their home to deliver a parcel. When one of the victims opened the door, she enquired about the parcel in Marathi and Shaikh replied in Hindi, police said. An altercation ensued after one of the sisters asked Shaikh to speak in Marathi, an official said. Shaikh then allegedly abused the sisters and assaulted one of them with a ballpoint pen and punched the other on the head, the official said. Robert Vadra moves application in Delhi court seeking copy of documents with ED

Robert Vadra, facing Enforcement Directorate (ED) probe in cases of alleged money laundering, moved an application in a Delhi court Saturday, seeking a copy of documents seized by the agency in a raid conducted at his offices last year. Special Judge Arvind Kumar posted the matter for February 25. The application which was moved through senior advocate KTS Tulsi sought a copy of the documents seized by the agency from Vadra's office. Vadra, who is the brother-in-law of Congress president Rahul Gandhi, said in his application that the ED has been interrogating him based on the seized documents and therefore their copies should be provided to him. On December 7 last year, the agency had carried out raids at Vadra's offices at Delhi. Vadra has appeared before the ED for questioning on multiple occasions in Delhi and Jaipur. Man carrying pistol in Delhi Metro arrested in Noida

A 28-year-old man was arrested here on Saturday after he was found carrying a country-made pistol inside a metro station on the Blue Line of the Delhi Metro, police said. The accused was held by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officials when the firearm was detected in his bag by a scanning machine at the Noida Sector 15 metro station, a police official said. He has been identified as Ankit Kumar Singh, 28, a resident of Palam village in Delhi. Singh told investigators that he is a final year engineering student at a college in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, police said. Girl thrown off terrace for resisting rape bid

A 15-year-old girl was allegedly thrown off the terrace of her house when she resisted a rape bid by a youth in Bijlipura area here on Saturday morning. The girl, a student of Class 10, was sleeping on the terrace when a youth from her neighbourhood tried to rape her, SP City Dinesh Tripathi said. When the girl raised an alarm, the accused pushed her off the terrace, she said. She suffered serious injuries and was admitted to the district hospital. Delhi court defers hearing on separatist leader Satish Shah's bail plea till April 2

A Delhi court on Saturday deferred the hearing till April 2 on a bail plea of separatist leader Shabir Shah, arrested in a decade-old money laundering case. Shah's bail plea came up for hearing before Additional Sessions Judge Satish Kumar Arora. The court had on February 18 sought response from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Shah's bail plea. The application was moved before the court on the grounds of parity after the Delhi High Court recently granted bail to co-accused and alleged hawala dealer Mohammad Aslam Wani in the case. The application claimed that Shah was wrongly and falsely implicated in the case, which was registered in 2007 for the alleged offence committed in 2005. Shah, who is in judicial custody and lodged in Tihar Central Jail, had said in his application that Wani has already been granted bail and that there was lack of evidence against him. CBI team probing Rs 126-cr land scam attacked, chased away by accused's relatives in Gr Noida

A team of CBI officials, including a woman constable, was allegedly attacked and chased away by relatives of an accused, also a CBI official, in a 2014 land fraud case from his village in Greater Noida on Saturday, officials said. A few CBI officials were injured during the scuffle with the relatives, who forced the sleuths inside a private property in Sonpura village and beat them up with sticks and bare hands to help the accused escape, the agency said in a statement issued in Delhi. It also alleged that mobile phones, ID cards of some members were burnt by the attackers. The agency said it filed a complaint with the local police, following which an FIR was registered. Mob assaults youth taking him as child-lifter

A youth was beaten up by a mob in Phoolbagan area of North Kolkata suspecting him as a child -lifter, police said Saturday. A police officer was also heckled when he tried to rescue the youth late Friday evening. A total of 17 persons were arrested in connection with the incident, police said. After being informed, personnel from Phoolbagan police station reached Dom Para locality and rescued the victim. He was admitted to a hospital with head injury. Locals alleged that the youth was roaming in the area wearing a burqa and was "trying" to lift children from behind a shopping mall. "We are investigating the matter. We are trying to collect CCTV footages recorded by cameras installed at the shopping mall," a senior officer of Kolkata Police said. A case was registered in this connection and a police picket was posted in the locality, he said. "The youth is a resident of Narkeldanga area. He is undergoing treatment and is at the moment stable," he said.

Decomposed tooth of Lalu removed

A decomposed tooth, which discomforted jailed RJD chief Lalu Prasad, has been removed at the dental ward of the RIIMS, a senior doctor said Saturday. Dr Umesh Prasad, head of the attending team of doctors on Prasad, said that the tooth was extracted Friday and two stitches were required to seal the place to prevent deposit of food particles. He said his tooth ache has reduced. The extraction of tooth took place after the former Bihar chief minister complained of tooth ache. The RJD supremo is serving prison sentence since December, 2017 after being convicted in the multi-crore fodder scam cases. He has been convicted in four fodder scam cases by different CBI courts in Ranchi. He is facing trial in a fifth fodder scam case in Ranchi, pertaining to Doranda Treasury case. The fodder scam relates to fradulent withdrawal of money from government treasuries in early 90s in combined Bihar when RJD was in power and Prasad the chief minister.

UK drops corruption probe against Rolls-Royce in India, other countries

The UK has announced the closure of its probe into corruption charges against senior executives of British aerospace and defence major Rolls-Royce in India and six other countries. Serious Fraud Office (SFO), the UK government's investigation authority, which also closed a long-running probe against pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline, said in a statement on Friday that the cases had little chance of a successful prosecution and were being closed after nearly six years. Rolls-Royce had become embroiled in allegations of bribery and corruption to win business in seven countries, including India, Indonesia, Thailand, Russia, Nigeria, China and Malaysia.
