US: Man punches Sikh clerk believing he's Muslim, arrested

A man was arrested in the US on charges of hate crime after he allegedly punched a Sikh clerk and threw hot coffee on him at a shop in California, believing that the victim was a Muslim.According to the store's CCTV footage, the man dressed in black and identified as John Crain, entered the 7-Eleven convenience store in Marysville at around 2 am on February 13.Moments later, the Sikh clerk emerged and the suspect attacked him near the front door of the shop, punching him on his face and throwing hot coffee on him before fleeing from the spot.The victim suffered injuries on his face and is reported to be recovering.The Sikh clerk later told the officers that the suspect had prepared a cup of coffee and tried to leave without paying, according to a police statement.Later on that day, law enforcement personnel responded to another case of assault in an area and found the suspect walking away from the scene which matched his description from the earlier incident based on the CCTV footage.

Man arrested for sharing objectionable post on Pulwama attack

A man was arrested here on Sunday for allegedly sharing an objectionable post on social media about the Pulwama terror attack, an official said. Based on a complaint received against a local resident sharing the objectionable post on Facebook and WhatsApp, a case was registered against the person, said Sub-Inspector Anil Kumar. Azizpur resident Mazhar Hashmi was arrested and the case was registered against him under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) related to treason, disturbing peace and communal harmony. He was also booked under provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000, the official said.

18-year-old held for posting pro-Pakistan slogan on WhatsApp

An 18-year-old man has been arrested in Chhattisgarh's Durg district for allegedly posting a pro-Pakistan slogan in a WhatsApp group while reacting to the Pulwama terror attack, police said Sunday. The man, identified only as Kaif, a resident of Farid Nagar under Supela police station area, was arrested Friday night based on a complaint filed by one Karan Banjare, a resident of Bhilai, a local police official told PTI. According to the complaint, some members of a group on WhatsApp, a popular messaging app, Friday posted messages paying homage to the CRPF personnel killed in the February 14 sucide bombing in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir. Guj BJP ex-MLA murder: 2 Maha-based shooters held from Dang

Two persons hailing from Maharashtra were arrested in connection with the January 8 killing of ex-Gujarat BJP MLA Jayanti Bhanushali, a senior police official said Sunday. Bhanushali, once a BJP MLA from the state's Abdasa Assembly constituency, was shot dead on board the Bhuj-Dadar Express betweem Bhachau and Samkhiyali stations in Kutch district. Speaking to reporters Sunday, Director General of Police, CID (Crime) Ashish Bhatia identified the two arrested sharpshooters as Sasikant Kamble and Ashraf Sheikh, both residents of Yerawada near Pune in Maharashtra. 23-yr-old sharpshooter of Neeraj Bawana gang arrested

A 23-year-old man suspected to be a sharpshooter of the Neeraj Bawana gang was arrested on Sunday, police said. Taurn alias Tori is a resident of Dariyapur village in the Bawana industrial area, they said. A pistol loaded with a live cartridge was recovered from him, Gaurav Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer north), said. Police said they have been closely monitoring the activities of the gang in the national capital, and following an input zeroed in on Tarun who is a close associate of Neeraj Bawana. Last year, Tarun, along with his associates, had allegedly tried to kill one Gaurav, who is a shooter of rival gangster Rajesh Bawana, outside a court in Rohini but was nabbed by the police, they said. Telangana police 'successful' in crime prevention

Telangana Home Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali Sunday said citizen-friendly policing was being effectively implemented in the state and the public have gained confidence in reporting crime. Teenage boy sexually assaulted by tutor in east Delhi

A 14-year-old boy was allegedly sexually assaulted by his tutor at his home in east Delhi's Anand Vihar following which the accused was arrested, police said Sunday. The incident took place on Friday and the accused man had been teaching him for the last couple of months, they said. According to police, the 35-year-old accused took the boy inside the bathroom and touched him inappropriately during the game of hide and seek. The boy's parents were not at home at the time of incident, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Meghna Yadav said. He narrated the incident to his parents after which they approached Anand Vihar police station, she said. A case was registered under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act on Friday, the DCP said. The accused tutor was arrested on Saturday, police said.

5 arrested with old currency notes worth Rs 10 lakh in Rajasthan

Five people were arrested with old currency notes of Rs 1,000 worth Rs 10 lakh, police said Sunday. Acting on a tip-off, a police team intercepted a car at Daulatpura check post and found 10 bundles of Rs 1,000 old currency notes in a bag. Five people were arrested, Jaipur police commissioner Anand Srivastava said. They were identified as Ayub Mohammad (35), Pradhyumn Singh (37), Rajkumar Jangid (32), Bhanwar Lal Meena (24) and Gokul Meena (25). A case was registered against the accused under sections of the Specified Bank Notes (Cessation of Liablities) Act, 2017. The Income tax department was informed about the seizure of the old currency notes for further investigation, police said.

Woman fatally hits estranged husband, attempts suicide

: A 34-year-old woman fatally attacked her allegedly drunken husband when he attempted to hit her with a liquor bottle, and tried to end her life by consuming poison early Sunday, police here said. The couple separated since the last few months as Baburaj (37) deserted his wife and three girl children, and began living with another woman, the police said. Under the circumstances, Baburaj, working in a printing press, went to Bhagyam's house at 2 am after getting drunk and picked up a quarrel with her, they said. The woman asked him to get out of the house, and he, in a fit of rage, tried to hit her with the bottle he was carrying, the police said. Woman jumps in front of train along with two kids; all die

Upset over a domestic issue, a married woman allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a moving train along with her two minor children in Bharuch district of Gujarat, police said Sunday. A local BJP leader Suprabhat Batyabyal and two others were arrested in West Bengal's Birbhum district on Sunday in connection with the kidnapping of his daughter, a senior police officer said. Batyabyal's daughter, who was kidnapped at gunpoint on Thursday, was "rescued" from neighbouring Uttar Dinajpur district, he said. A Kashmiri student of a private university in Himachal Pradesh's Solan district was "rusticated" and later arrested for allegedly making anti-national remarks on social media, police said Sunday. 2 drug peddlers, 4 bootleggers arrested by Ghaziabad police

Two drug peddlers and four bootleggers have been arrested in Ghaziabad district in separate incidents during the past 24 hours, police said Sunday. A police team from Loni police station area arrested Ibrahim from Chand Masjid of Mustafabad colony with 1.5kg of Alprazolam powder, mainly used to depress central nervous system functions, on Saturday, DIG Upendra Agarwal said. Another drug peddler Rahul was nabbed by police with 170 pouches of ganja from Vijay Nagar area of Ghaziabad city, he said. Life sentence to man for killing accomplice during robbery bid

A local court in Maharashtra has awarded life imprisonment to a 36-year-old man for killing his accomplice during a robbery bid in year 2013. District Judge P P Jadhav, in his order issued earlier this month, also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on the accused, Sanjay Patil, a resident of Borivali in neighbouring Mumbai. The accused was convicted under the Indian Penal Code Section 302 (murder) and relevant sections of the Arms Act. According to the prosecution, Patil and his accomplice Pradeep Bhartiya were on a car while planning to rob bank cash being carried in a vehicle moving ahead of them on September 26, 2013. Patil asked Bhartiya, who was driving the car, to speed up the vehicle. As their car reached near Waraladevi Talao in Bhiwandi town of Thane, Bhartiya slowed down the vehicle due to traffic in the area following which Patil fired at him, injuring him seriously. Speeding truck mows down three

Three people were killed when a speeding truck ran over them here on Sunday, police said. The incident took place near Baretha transport check post, SHO Mania police station Yogendra Singh said. The deceased have been identified as Rajkumar Chaudhary, 40, a transport department employee, Sultan Singh, 50, and Brijendra, 48, he said. Man faces hate crime charge after throwing hot coffee, punching Sikh clerk in US

A man was arrested on hate crime charges in the US state of California after he punched a Sikh clerk and threw hot coffee on him as he believed the victim was a Muslim, according to a media report. The man, identified as John Crain, threw the hot coffee at the clerk then punched him in the face before fleeing just before 2 a.m. on Wednesday in Marysville, the Sacramento Bee reported. The Sikh clerk told officers that Crain had prepared himself a cup of coffee and attempted to leave without paying, according to a Marysville Police Department press release.
