Cyber fraud cases see spike between 2014-16: Govt

The number of cyber fraud complaints registered in the country has seen an upward trend during 2014-16 with over 6,100 cases being registered by various investigative agencies, the government told Parliament Tuesday. Minister of State for Home Hansram G Ahir informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply that, as per National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, 2,522 cases of cyber fraud were registered in 2016, 2,384 in 2015 and 1,286 in the year 2014. The data pertaining to 2017 and 2018 were "not available" at present, he said. The total cases registered during these three years stands at 6,192. The minister was asked whether cases of frauds/cheating being committed via e-mails and SMSes have increased across the country during each of the last three years despite several measures taken by the government to curb them.

6-year-old boy from TN electrocuted in Hyderabad

: A six-year-old boy was electrocuted while playing in a residential township here, police said Tuesday. On Monday, the first standard student was playing with his friends when he reportedly came into contact with a live wire near a lamp-post and got electrocuted, the police said. A CCTV footage showed the boy collapsing near the lamp-post. He was taken to a hospital where he was declared brought dead, they said. The victim's father is a software professional and the familyhails from Tamil Nadu, the police said. A case under IPC section 304A (causing death by negligence) has been registered, they said.

Clean chit for DU prof Sundar and others in C'garh murder case

Chhattisgarh Police have cleared Delhi University professor Nandini Sundar, Jawaharlal Nehru University professor Archana Prasad and four others of the charges of murdering a tribal in Sukma district in 2016, for lack of "concrete evidence", an officer said Tuesday. Police also gave clean chit to activist Vineet Tiwari, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Sanjay Parate, and Manju Kavasi and Mangla Ram Karma, Sukma superintendent of police Jitendra Shukla told PTI. The tribal, identified as Shamnath Baghel, was allegedly killed by naxals with sharp weapons on the night of November 4, 2016 in Nama village under Tongpal police station limits. As per the complaint lodged by Shamnath's wife Bimla, the ultras had accused her husband of disobeying Sundar and five others who are their "well-wishers", a police officer said. SC reserves verdict on PIL seeking fresh probe into Haren Pandya murder case

The Supreme Court Tuesday reserved its verdict on a PIL seeking court-monitored fresh investigation into the murder of then Gujarat Home Minister Haren Pandya. A bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra reserved the order after senior advocate Shanti Bhushan, appearing for NGO CPIL, and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta concluded their arguments. Bhushan said that several new facts have emerged recently which required fresh investigation into the murder case. The Solicitor General alleged that the PIL jurisdiction was being abused by the NGO for settling political scores. Pandya was a minister of state for home in the then Narendra Modi government in Gujarat. He was shot dead on March 26, 2003, in Ahmedabad near Law Garden area of the city during morning walk.

Mehtab raises issue of alleged money laundering by Jay Panda

BJD MP Bharthari Mehtab Tuesday raised the issue of alleged FEMA violation and money laundering by former MP Baijayant Jay Panda and wanted to know what steps were being taken by the Centre in this regard. Panda was suspended from the BJD last year. He alleged that Jay Panda, an Indian passport holder, along with his wife and family associate had opened an account in tax haven Bahamas in violation of rules. He wanted to know as to what action has been taken by the Centre. "What steps Union government has taken? Is it still at investigation stage? How long will it take to complete the investigation?," he said in the Lok Sabha during Zero Hour. Recently there were reports that the Income Tax Department received a complaint alleging money laundering and violation of Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) by former Biju Janata Dal MP and Odisha industrialist Jay Panda.

Delhi court sends Rajeev Saxena to judicial custody till Feb 18, orders his medical check-up

A Delhi court Tuesday sent Rajeev Saxena, arrested in the Rs 3,600-crore AgustaWestland money laundering case, to judicial custody till February 18. Special Judge Arvind Kumar also directed Saxena's medical check up at AIIMS and sought a report by 2 pm tomorrow. Saxena, whose ED custody ended today had sought to talk to judge Kumar in private, without the presence of his lawyers, after which the court had initiated in-camera proceedings in the case. Last Friday, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had sought his custody from the court, saying the probe is at a crucial stage. Saxena is one of the accused named in the charge sheet filed by ED in the case. Christian Michel, former AgustaWestland and Finmeccanica directors Giuseppe Orsi and Bruno Spagnolini, former Air Force chief SP Tyagi and Saxena's wife Shivani have also been named by the agency in the charge sheet.

Efforts to revive Khalistan-linked terrorism in Punjab: Govt

The NIA has registered seven terror-related cases in Punjab which were aimed at reviving the Khalistan-linked terrorism in the state, the Lok Sabha was informed Tuesday. Union minister of state for home Hansraj Ahir said the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has registered five cases related to murder and two cases related to attempt to murder in Punjab during 2016-17. "The objective of which was to destabilise the law and order situation in Punjab and to revive Khalistan linked terrorism in the state," he said, replying a written question. Ahir said in order to avert terror incidents in the country, there is a close and effective coordination mechanism between intelligence and security agencies at the Centre and the state level.

SC adjourns hearing on Ericsson's contempt plea by a day, orders Ambani, others to be present

The Supreme Court Tuesday adjourned for tomorrow the hearing on a contempt plea filed by Ericsson India against Reliance Communication Ltd (RCom) Chairman Anil Dhirubhai Ambani and others for allegedly not clearing its dues of Rs 550 crore. Ambani, Reliance Telecom Ltd Chairman Satish Seth and Reliance Infratel Ltd Chairperson Chhaya Virani appeared before a bench of Justices R F Nariman and Vineet Saran in pursuance to the contempt notice issued against them. The bench asked the three to be present in the court on Wednesday. The apex court adjourned the matter to tomorrow due to paucity of time and assembling of a special bench in the post-lunch session. During the previous hearing, senior advocate Dushyant Dave, appearing for Ericsson India, had said that there was gross violation of apex court's two earlier orders and RCom had not paid any dues. Ericsson had made it clear before the court that they would not accept Rs 118 crore that was being given by RCom and instead wanted their .

Woman, daughter killed in hit-and-run incident, son hurt

: Two women were killed while a man was injured Tuesday when a vehicle knocked them down near Sathyamangalam in the district and sped away, police said. Parvathy (65), her daughter Bhannari (38) and son Jothy (35) were walking towards their house after getting off a bus when the unidentified vehicle hit the three, the police said. Passersby took the three to hospital, but the women died on the way while the man was under treatment, they said. A case has been registered and investigation begun, they added.

VVIP Chopper case: Delhi Court allows Chirstian Michel to meet his lawyer-friend

A Delhi court Tuesday allowed Christian Michel James, alleged middleman arrested in the graft-tainted AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal, to meet his Italian lawyer-friend Santrolli Rosemary Patrizi Dos Anjos. Special judge Arvind Kumar allowed Rosemary to meet Michel in Tihar jail as a "general visitor" for half an hour from Monday to Friday. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had opposed Michel's plea seeking permission to meet Rosemary, who was present in the court today. Michel, extradited from Dubai, was arrested by the ED on December 22 last year. On January 5, Michel was sent to judicial custody in the ED case. He is also lodged in judicial custody in the CBI case related to the scam. Michel is among the three alleged middlemen being probed in the case by the ED and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The others are Guido Haschke and Carlo Gerosa.

Man held for raping ex-lover at lodge

A 23-year-old man from Boisar in Maharashtra's Palghar district was arrested Monday for allegedly holding his former lover captive in a lodge and raping her overnight, police said Tuesday. The alleged incident occurred on the intervening night of February 10 and 11, a police officer said. The accused, identified as Faisal Saifi, and the 21-year-old victim had been in physical relationship since 2017 until recently before the woman spurned him, he said. Saifi had secretly filmed their intimate moments and used to blackmail the woman into maintaining physical relations with him, the officer said. On Sunday night, he called the woman to the lodge under the pretext of deleting the video clippings, but raped her repeatedly by holding her captive, the officer said. Saifi finally allowed the victim to go on February 12 morning, the officer said. The woman then approached the local police station and lodged a complaint against Saifi. In J-K's Kathua, waiter shot at as guests open fire after fight over food

A waiter at a banquet hall in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district was shot at as a group of alleged drunk guests opened fire after a fight over food, officials said Tuesday. The incident happened at a party in a banquet hall in Logate Morh area on Monday night when some guests, who were apparently drunk, fought over food and fired three-four rounds in which the waiter was injured, police said. The man was taken to a nearby hospital and is said to be out of danger, they added. The accused fled the spot after the incident, police said. SC holds Rao and CBI legal advisor guilty of contempt, imposes fine of Rs 1 lakh on both

The Supreme Court Tuesday convicted and punished then acting CBI Director M Nageswara Rao and agency's legal advisor S Bhasuram by imposing a fine of Rs 1 lakh each and sentenced them to sit in the courtroom till the rising of the court for committing contempt of its orders. The apex court held them guilty of its contempt for wilfully disobeying its order by transferring CBI Joint Director A K Sharma, who was probing the Bihar shelter home sexual assault cases, as additional director general of CRPF on January 17. "In our considered view, it is a case where contempt has been committed by both the then acting CBI Director, M N Rao, and the director prosecution (of the agency)" a bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said. Missing RTI activist found dead; police suspect murder

A 32-year-old RTI activist, who went missing last month, was found dead in Pune district of Maharashtra, a police official said on Tuesday. Police suspect that the deceased, Vinayak Shirsath, was killed by someone, a senior official Bharti Vidyapeeth police station here said. The decomposed body was found near Mutha village on Lavasa road on Monday evening, he said. Shirsath, a resident of Pune city, went missing on January 30 following which his family members had registered a police complaint on January 31. "We later registered a kidnapping case on February 5 after his family raised suspicion that he might have been abducted as he had raised voice under the Right to Information (RTI) Act against illegal constructions in some parts of the city," the official said. Maharashtra's Special Investigation Team (SIT) filed a supplementary charge sheet in Kolhapur court against the four accused in the 2015 murder case of GovindPansare.The accused, namely Amol Arvind Kale, Vasudev Bhagwan Suryvanshi,Bharat Jayant Kurne, and Amit Ramchandra Digvekar, have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).Pansare, a Communist Party of India leader, who was known for his rationalist views, was shot dead in Kolhapur on February 20, 2015. Contempt notice: Nageswara Rao reaches SC

M Nageswara Rao reaches Supreme Court to appear in connection with the contempt notice issued against him by the court for transferring the CBI officer probing the Bihar shelter home cases. The court had issued the notice to Rao for transferring joint director A K Sharma out of CBI. Rao on Monday admitted that as interim chief of the CBI he committed a "mistake" in transferring Sharma and apologised to the top court, saying he had no intention to circumvent its orders. Rao, who filed an affidavit in response to the contempt notice issued to him on February 7, said he was praying for an unconditional and unqualified apology by the court.

5 members of Texas family, including infant, found shot dead

Sheriff's officials say five members of an East Texas family, including a 15-month-old child, have been found dead at the family's home. Polk County sheriff's officials say two men were found dead inside the house while two women and the infant girl were discovered outside the residence. Chief Deputy Byron Lyons identified the deceased as Ashley Delaney and husband Randy Horn, as well as Delaney's grandparents, Carlos and Lynda Delaney. The child's identity hasn't been released, but Lyons says a woman was found safe locked in a bedroom closet. She told investigators that she awoke about 5:30 am. Monday to a disturbance described as popping noises. She called her son, who alerted authorities about 10:30 am. Lyons says a firearm was recovered from the house about 75 miles northeast of Houston and that no suspects were being sought. However, he declined to characterise the incident as a multiple homicide and suicide.
