A 40-year-old woman, who was earlier a bootlegger, was shot by a man for not selling beer to him and his two associates in northwest Delhi's Jahangirpuri, following which the trio have been arrested, police said Tuesday. The victim was taken to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital by her family and doctors stated that she was out of danger, they said. The accused, identified as Vikas Mishra (24), Pankaj (23) and Mintoo (22), were nabbed from Bhalswa village, the police said. The incident occurred on June 7 when the three men went to the house of the woman and asked for beer. The woman told them that she did not have beer. However, a quarrel broke out as they thought that she was lying. The Karnataka government Tuesday decided to strengthen the existing panel to check financial frauds by including some more officials from other government bodies in the wake of recurring incidents in the state. "There already exists a high-level committee. We will include a few more in it after discussons with the chief secretary. We will take steps to ensure financial frauds don't recur," home minister M B Patil said. He said the committee should have representatives from the Reserve Bank of India, Enforcement Directorate and Income Tax department. Patil said there were many challenges to tackle cases of financial fraud, which relate to law, the cooperative and revenue departments, municipal corporations shops and business establishment department and registrars of companies. A judge, who is heading a division bench of the Madras High Court, Tuesday recused himself from hearing a plea moved by Sterlite company challenging a state government order closing its copper unit in Tuticorin district. The hearing into the petition by the Vedanta group firm Sterlite Copper challenging the closure order was stalled, as Justice K K Sasidharan, the seniormost judge in the bench also comprising justices Sasidharan and P T Asha, recused himself. When the plea came up before the bench, Justice Sasidharan said he had decided to recuse from hearing the case since he had passed an order in a connected matter while sitting at the Madurai bench of the high court restraining Sterlite from reopening the plant. A national-level player of martial arts and another man were arrested for allegedly stealing vehicles of an online car renting portal after hiring them in Connaught Place area, police said Tuesday. A woman fell down from a moving car after she was allegedly pushed out by her husband here with the CCTV visual of the incident going viral Tuesday. Police said the woman, however, escaped with minor injuries in the May 9 incident while a case has been registered against her husband. In the video of the incident that occurred on a road in a residential area in Thudiyalur, the woman is seen falling off the car even as some bystanders look at her. A case has been registered against the man under various sections of Indian Penal Code, including 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt and 506(1) (punishment for criminal intimidation), the police said. The Madras High Court Tuesday quashed the charge memo issued to IPS officer G Sampath Kumar for his alleged involvement in the 2013 Indian Premier League (IPL) betting and match-fixing scam. The Home Secretary, the Government of Tamil Nadu, had issued the memo on September 11, 2015. A division bench of justices K K Sasidharan and P T Asha allowed Kumar's petition seeking quashing of the order of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), upholding the charge memo, primarily on the ground that the competent authorities had failed to obtain prior sanction from the state home ministry, which is mandatory. Three persons, including an advocate, were arrested for allegedly duping people of crores of rupees on the pretext of providing household products at cheaper rates in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said Tuesday. While main accused Tariq Mehmood was arrested on May 22, two others including his wife and the advocate were arrested Tuesday, they said. A complaint was lodged at the Mendhar police station by some of the victimised people after which an FIR was was registered. The case was later transferred to the crime branch, the officials said. A special NIA court here Tuesday awarded life imprisonment to a Mumbai-based businessman and imposed a fine of Rs 5 crore on him for leaving a hijack threat note on a Jet Airways plane in October 2017. The court of special NIA judge K M Dave said the fine amount submitted by the convict, businessman Birju Salla, will be distributed among the crew members and passengers on board the affected plane. Salla was accused of creating a hijack scare by planting a threat note written in English and Urdu in the tissue paper box of the aircraft's toilet on October 30. The pilot and co-pilot of the flight will be given Rs 1 lakh each, the air hostesses will be given Rs 50,000 each, and 116 passengers on the flight will be given Rs 25,000 each from the fine collected from Salla, the court said. The Madras High Court Tuesday dismissed the bail petition of a male nurse arrested in connection with a racket allegedly involved in sale of newborns from a government hospital in Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu. Justice G K Ilanthiraiyan held that the petitioner was charged with a serious offence and the investigation was in the initial stage. He said the prosecution case was that petitioner Arulsamy, along with the other accused, working as nurses in the government hospital were allegedly involved in sale of newborns. They had also forged birth certificates of the babies.
