Kathua gangrape: 3 get life imprisonment, 3 others 5 years' jail term
A court here on Monday sentenced to life imprisonment the three main accused in the gangrape-and-murder of an eight-year-old nomadic girl in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua, while awarding five years in jail to three others for destruction of evidence, lawyers said. After nearly a year-long trial, the court held the six guilty in the case that sparked nation-wide outrage, while acquitted another accused Vishal Jangotra, son of mastermind Sanji Ram, giving him the 'benefit of doubt', according to Mubeen Farooqi, who represented the victim's family in the court. Pak's former president Zardari arrested in fake bank accounts case
Pakistan's former president Asif Ali Zardari was arrested on Monday from his residence here in the fake bank accounts case by the country's top anti-corruption body, officials said. A National Accountability Bureau (NAB) team accompanied by police, including female officials, entered the PPP co-chairman's house in F-8 sector here after the Islamabad High Court rejected an application seeking extension in the pre-arrest bails of Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur in the case. However, his sister Faryal was so far not arrested. The arrest warrants were issued on Sunday by the NAB, the anti-corruption watchdog, which is probing them in the fake bank accounts case. The case pertains to the use of alleged fake bank accounts to keep money and transferring it out of Pakistan. According to the NAB officials, the duo made transactions of Rs 150 million through alleged fake bank accounts. Youth held for posting inappropriate pictures with sculptures
A 22-year old man has been arrested here for allegedly taking pictures of himself by posing 'inappropriately' with sculptures at the famous Big Temple in Thanjavur and posting them on social media, police said. Police said they arrested Mujibbur Rahman of Othakadai near Madurai Sunday on a complaint by a resident here who said he was 'shocked' to see the pictures in the social media and sought action. A case had been registered against him for behaving in "obscene and inappropriate manner" in public apart from posting the images on social media, police said. Investigations were on to find out why the man chose to visit temple, where non-Hindus are not allowed, they said. The Supreme Court Monday agreed to hear tomorrow the plea challenging the arrest of journalist Prashant Kanojia, accused of making objectionable comments against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on social media. A vacation bench comprising justices Indira Banerjee and Ajay Rastogi took note of the submission of lawyer Nitya Ramakrishnan, appearing for Kanojia's wife Jagisha Arora, that the plea needed urgent hearing as the arrest was "illegal" and "unconstitutional". Arora has filed a habeas corpus petition (bring the person) challenging the arrest of Kanojia and sought a direction to Uttar Pradesh police to set him free without any delay. Aligarh minor's killing: DCW chief writes to PM demanding death sentence for guilty
Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding death sentence for those who killed a toddler in Aligarh's Tappal township. In her letter to the prime minister, Maliwal rued that after promulgating an ordinance that introduced death penalty for rape of girls aged 12 or below, "no new steps" have been taken to prevent incidents of sexual assaults on minor girls despite promises by the government. The body of the girl was found in a garbage dump on June 2, three days after she was reported missing. The girl's father has alleged that she was killed because he failed to repay a Rs 10,000 loan from the accused. According to police, four people have been arrested in the case so far. Journalists, activists hold march to protest arrest of Kanojia, two others
A group of journalists and activists held a protest here on Monday over the arrest of scribe Prashant Kanojia and the editor and the head of a Noida-based TV channel by the Uttar Pradesh police, alleging that it is an attack on the freedom of expression. They demanded the immediate release of Kanojia, Ishita Singh, who is the editor of Noida-based TV channel Nation Live, and its head Anuj Shukla, who have faced police action over release of alleged objectionable content against Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The journalists, many wearing black arm bands and holding placards, held a symbolic march from the Press Club of India in central Delhi towards the Rail Bhawan circle and back in the scorching heat and raised slogans against the Yogi government. Delhi govt appoints panel of 69 lawyers for district courts
The Delhi government has appointed a panel of 69 advocates to conduct cases on its behalf before the district courts of the national capital. The department of law, justice and legislative affairs has issued a notification constituting the lawyers' panel, following the approval of Delhi Law Minister Kailash Gahlot. There are seven district court complexes in Delhi. According to the notification, lawyers such as Neeraj Aggarwal, Bindiya Savara, Pratyaksh Gupta, Mridul Jain, Ajay Sharma, Dheeraj Kumar Singh, Rohit Bansal, Apoorv Gupta, Mukesh Anand and Firdouse Qutb Wani are part of the panel. "These appointments shall be subject to such terms and conditions as may be prescribed from time to time. "This notification shall come into force with immediate effect and shall remain in force till further orders," it stated. Man shot in leg following quarrel over his jailed brother
A 21-year-old youth was shot by some persons after a quarrel over the victim's jailed brother in east Delhi's Kalyanpuri, police said Monday. Karan, who is a courier delivery boy, suffered injuries in his leg in the Sunday night incident and was admitted to a hospital where he was stated to be out of danger. He was returning home from a nearby market when a group of three-four persons taunted him over his brother Rahul, who is serving sentence in Mandoli jail, leading to a heated argument, they said.
