Amid a spate of rape incidents involving minors reported from Uttar Pradesh recently, the state police Monday said it was dealing with such cases with "full sensitivity" and "acting promptly". "There are two factors in these recent incidents. Firstly, they have taken place in rural areas, and secondly, the crime was committed by those who were known to the victims," Uttar Pradesh DGP O P Singh told reporters here. His remarks come against the backdrop of recent reports of alleged rape of minors in Aligarh, Kushinagar, Hamirpur, Kanpur and Meerut. An administrative inquiry has confirmed allegations against a newly elected BJD MLA that he "manhandled" and "insulted" a junior PWD engineer, a senior official said on Monday. The inquiry was launched after a video showing Patnagarh MLA Saroj Kumar Meher forcing the engineer to do sit-ups in public in Bolangir district went viral last week. The district collector had sought a report on the incident. Patnagarh sub-collector had been tasked with probing the incident. "I have received a report from Patnagarh sub-collector confirming the incident and allegations of manhandling and insult of the junior engineer," Bolangir District Collector Arindam Dakua said. The district administration will send the report to the state government and recommend action against all those involved in the incident, he said. A village-level revenue officer was Monday arrested for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 5,000 in Rajasthan's Dausa district, an anti-corruption bureau spokesperson said. The accused, Naresh Bairwa, posted at Dausa's Lalsot area, had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 from the complainant, Mukesh Meena, for land mutation, he said. After verifying the complaint, the bureau arrested Bairwa while he was accepting Rs 5,000, the first installment of the total bribe demanded, from Meena, the spokesperson said. A case has been registered against Bairwa under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and further investigation is underway, he added.

The National Commission for Women has welcomed a Pathankot court decision convicting six persons in the horrific gangrape-and-murder case of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua, and sought harshest punishment for them. NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma said, "I welcome the decision of the court and request them to give harshest punishment and hang them to set example for others because cases against minors are increasing and it would set an example." The girl was kidnapped on January 10 last year and was allegedly gangraped in captivity in a small village temple in Kathua after having been kept sedated for four days. She was later bludgeoned to death. The incident led to a country-wide outcry and the trial was held on day-to-day basis at the district and sessions court in Pathankot.

A 55-year-old man was electrocuted after he came in contact with a live wire in a tubewell in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district, police said Monday. The incident took place in Nayagaon village of the district on Sunday, they said. Suraj Singh, who was a farmer, had gone to the tubewell to drink water when he came in contact with the wire, the police said. He was rushed to hospital and was declared dead on arrival, they said.
A man has been arrested by Customs officials at the Delhi airport for allegedly trying to smuggle mobile phones, including iPhones, worth Rs 63 lakh into the country. The accused was intercepted after his arrival from Guangzhou in China on Tuesday. His flight was via Colombo. His baggage and personal search resulted in the recovery of 204 illegally imported mobile phones of different brands such as iPhones of Apple, Samsung, Sony, BlackBerry, a statement issued Monday by Customs department said. The market value of the items comes to Rs 63.01 lakh, it said, adding that the passenger was arrested.
At least three people were killed while four others were injured after a high-speed car rammed into another four-wheeler and a bike on the Yamuna Expressway here on Monday.The incident happened on the Noida-Agra stretch when a high-speed car hit a motorcycle and another car, which had taken a halt, officials said.The four injured persons include a woman. After rushing to the spot, cops shifted all of them to a nearby hospital for medical assistance and care.The police have arrested the driver of the high-speed car along with three other people.Further investigation in the matter is underway.

Hyderabad Police on Monday arrested three persons and seized 33 kg of silver in the form of bars from their possession."The vehicle was on it's way to Nellore. A man has been arrested for allegedly raping and killing an eight-year old girl in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Bala Bachchan said Monday. The girl went missing after she came out of her house in Kamla Nagar area of Bhopal on Saturday evening to buy something. Her body was found near a drain in the area Sunday morning.
