US prosecutors say they won't enforce strict abortion laws

A group of American prosecutors pledged on Friday not to enforce strict abortion laws in response to attempts to tighten access to the procedure in parts of the United States. The 42 elected prosecutors -- some of whom come from states that have restricted access, others from where the procedure remains easily available -- wrote that the new laws would "violate constitutional rights that have been the law of the land for nearly 50 years." The lawyers added that "many of the laws are so vaguely written" anyone involved in the abortion process could be prosecuted. The attorneys who signed the pledge come from 24 states and the US capital Washington, with 12 being statewide attorneys general and the rest being local elected prosecutors who can make their own charging decisions. Access to abortion in the United States is governed by the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe vs Wade decision, which allows for conditions to be placed on the procedure only after the first trimester of pregnancy. Alwar gang-rape: Rajasthan govt directs DGP to book SHO, 7 others

Rajasthan government's Additional Chief Secretary to the Home Department has directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to register a case against the Station House Officer (SHO) of Thanagazi police station Sardar Singh and other police personnel for negligence of duty in connection with the Alwar gang-rape case.A case under Section 166 A (c) and Section 4 (1) / (2) (b) and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 has been registered against Singh.Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Jagmohan Sharma has been asked to move out of the district, while Deputy Inspector Babulal, Assistant Sub-Inspector Ruparnarayan, and few constables were asked to be transferred outside the Jaipur range.Apart from this, officials have been asked to replace the remaining staff of the police station present at the time of the incident.In addition, the government has ordered to file a 16 CCA charge sheet against DSP Sharma, SHO Singh and constable Mahesh. 21-year-old attacked by in-laws in Hyderabad

Objectionable video of doctor and patient goes viral in J-K, SIT to probe case

Police registered a case on Friday after an objectionable video of a doctor and his patient from Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district went viral on social media, officials said. The case was lodged after the woman in the video registered a complaint saying that the clip was forged and edited, which was aimed at outraging her modesty, Senior Superintendent of Police Yougal Manhas said. She stated in the complaint that the video was filmed long back when she visited a doctor of Rajouri District Hospital for checkup, the officer said. A special investigation team with Deputy Superintendent of Police (Operations) Rajouri, Pranav Mahajan, as its head has been constituted to probe the matter. During initial investigation, it was ascertained that the video has been filmed inside the clinic of the doctor in Rajouri district, the officer said, adding that involvement of an insider in filming the video is suspected. Man held over teen's rape in J&K's Reasi

A self-proclaimed 'peer' was arrested on Friday for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district, police said on Friday. The accused, Qasim, 50, was evading arrest since he was booked on the charge of raping the teenager several times and impregnating her. Ex-cop sentenced to 12.5 years for killing of Australian woman

A former Minneapolis police officer was sentenced Friday to 12 years and six months in prison for the fatal shooting of an unarmed Australian woman who had been trying to report a crime. Mohamed Noor, 33, was convicted in April of second-degree manslaughter and third-degree murder in the 2017 death of Justine Damond, in a case that shocked the Midwestern city and sparked outrage in the victim's home country. Two arrested after brief gun battle in Delhi

Two men, said to be members of the notorious Nasir gang, were arrested on Friday after a brief gun fight with sleuths of the Delhi Police's Special Cell in the city's Mukhmailpur area, officials said. Salman (24) and Nazim (23), both residents of New Seelampur, were wanted in two separate cases of murder, police said, adding that they were carrying rewards of Rs 1 lakh and Rs 50,000, respectively. Police said they received information that the brothers would visit Pusta Road in Mukhmailpur in the wee hours to meet one of their contacts. "When the accused brothers reached Pusta Road T-point, they were signalled to stop. Instead, they whipped out their pistols and started firing at police following which a shootout took place," said PS Kushwah, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell). Around eight rounds were fired by the duo while the police fired six rounds, overpowering them, the officer said. During the shootout, Salman sustained a bullet injury on his right leg and was rushed .

Body found with throat slit in Delhi

The body of a 50-year-old man was found in a servants' quarter in Delhi's South Avenue area, which houses residences of several members of Parliament, police said on Friday. Police received information around 12.55 am on Thursday night about the incident. After reaching the spot, the man's body was found lying with his throat slit, New Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Madhur Verma said. The deceased has been identified as Suresh Tyagi. He was the husband of a servant who lives in the servants' quarter at South Avenue. His wife was not there at the time of the incident, a senior officer said. Preliminary probe suggests that Tyagi had recently lost money in gambling. Two suspects have been identified from the CCTV footage. Three persons have been detained for questioning, the officer said. All angles, including personal enmity, are being probed. The body was sent for post-mortem and a murder case has been registered, the police said.

Couple found dead, suicide suspected

A man and a woman were found dead in Girgaum area of South Mumbai Friday with police suspecting that it is a case of suicide by a couple. The two were found in unconscious state near Mafatlal Bath swimming pool Friday morning. Alerted by locals, police took them to a hospital where they were declared brought dead. Preliminary investigation revealed that they had consumed a pesticide, said an official of Marine Drive police station. There were no external injuries on both the bodies, he said, adding that the bodies have been sent for autopsy. Police were trying to ascertain the couple's identity, he added.

Man arrested for making lewd gestures at woman on Delhi Metro

A man has been arrested for allegedly making lewd gestures at a woman on a Delhi Metro train, police said Friday. A woman from south Delhi complained to the Gurgaon Police that a man made objectionable gestures at her while she was travelling on the metro on Thursday. The incident happened when the train was between Iffco Chowk and Huda City Centre metro stations, police said. The man was identified through CCTV footage from inside the train and was arrested following a tip off, Gurgaon Police Public Relations Officer Subhash Bokan said. He has been identified as Nitin, a resident of Charkhi Dadri district in Haryana, Bokan added. During interrogation, he has confessed of a similar incident previously as well, the officer said.
