A middle-aged woman has been arrested in Delhi for allegedly using forged signatures to withdraw over Rs 3.5 lakh from the account of her namesake, with whom she also shares the same address, police said on Friday. The lady complainant, a resident of Vipin Garden in Dwarka's Uttam Nagar, alleged that someone had withdrawn Rs 3.62 lakh from her bank account. The bank had informed her that the transactions were made by cheques and ATM cards, which she never received, a senior officer said. The woman had applied for a chequebook and an ATM card in February, but she never received any courier from the bank, the police said. During investigation, it was found that the courier boy had mistakenly delivered the chequebook and the ATM card to another woman, who shared the same name and address, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Anto Alphonse said. The Bombay High Court on Friday granted bail to TV actor Karan Oberoi in a rape case filed against him in May this year.Justice Revati Mohite-Dere granted him the bail on a surety of Rs 50,000.Earlier on May 17, the High Court had rejected Oberoi's bail plea.Oberoi was arrested on May 6 by the Mumbai Police and was sent to 14 days of judicial custody by an Andheri court.An FIR was registered against him under Sections 376 (rape) and 384 (extortion) of the Indian Penal Code.According to the FIR, the actor allegedly raped the woman on the pretext of marrying her.The victim's advocate, Ali Kaashif Khan, had alleged that his client's physical consent was taken on a false promise of marriage and hence it amounted to rape, citing a recent Supreme Court judgment.The FIR also stated that Oberoi not only raped the woman and filmed the act but also demanded money from the victim and threatened to release the video if she did not pay the requisite sum.

The lawyer of Iqbal Kaskar, fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim's brother, alleged here Friday that the Thane jail authorities were not giving proper medical treatment to his client despite a court order. Kaskar has been arrested in a case of extortion by Thane police. Advocate Vishal Aghawale told reporters that a Judicial Magistrate (First Class) had ordered on June 1 that Kaskar be taken to a hospital in Mumbai such as the government-run J J Hospital or the St George Hospital. Kaskar has pain in his legs and hands and can not walk without support, the lawyer said. The Madras High Court Friday dismissed a batch of petitions by a consulting firm allegedly linked to Congress MP Karti Chidambaram, the son of former Union minister P Chidambaram, challenging the "freezing" of its bank accounts by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the INX Media money laundering case. Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana rejected the batch of petitions filed by Advantage Strategic Consulting Private Limited, observing that the company cannot approach the high court directly without exhausting other remedies. He said the complaint filed under Section 5(5) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) had been adjudicated upon and the order of the Enforcement Directorate freezing the accounts had been confirmed by the adjudicating authority. "The petitioner has to challenge the order of the adjudicating authority before the Appellate Tribunal in accordance with law and these writ petitions have no merit," the judge said. A former police officer in Minnesota was sentenced Friday to 12 years and six months in prison for the fatal shooting of an unarmed Australian woman who had been trying to report a crime. Mohamed Noor, 33, was convicted in April of second-degree manslaughter and third-degree murder in the 2017 death of Justine Damond. Noor was responding to her report of a possible sexual assault in an alley in Minneapolis. At sentencing Noor told the judge of his horror over learning he had shot an innocent woman. "That mistake is my hardship to bear," Noor told the judge, his voice breaking.
A 35-year-old jeweller was allegedly shot dead on Friday by unidentified persons in Outer Delhi's Ranhola area, police said. "We received information at around 2.00 pm. After reaching the spot, it was learnt that unidentified persons had come to Ram Avtar Singh's shop and fired at him several times," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Seju Kuruvilla said. Singh, a resident of Vikas Nagar in Ranhola, used to manage a jewellery shop near his home. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared brought dead, officials said. A licensed revolver and two empty cartridges were recovered from the spot. Police have sent the body for post-mortem and a case has been registered. Investigation is on to nab the culprits, they said.

A woman dentist, feeling ignored by the family, allegedly killed her brother and his 14-month-old daughter through poisoning within the span of 25 days, Patan police in Gujarat said Friday. Following a complaint by her father, Kinnari Patel (28) was arrested from Ahmedabad Thursday, said inspector R G Chaudhari of Patan police. Kinnari's brother Jigar Patel (32) had died on May 5 while his 14-month-old daughter Mahi had died on May 30. Narendra Patel, the accused woman's father, told police that his son Jigar had started complaining of symptoms of illness including seizures some six months ago. "Patel family lives in Ahmedabad. When they were visiting Patan in May, Jigar suddenly collapsed. He was declared brought dead at a hospital on May 5," said Chaudhari. The apex child rights body has issued an advisory to media houses to ensure that the identity of the girl killed in Aligarh is not revealed by them. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) said identifying the victim is a punishable offence under Section 23 of the POSCO Act, 2012, and Section 74 of the JJ Act, 2015. "The administration and police are taking due action in this regard. The media houses are advised to take utmost care while reporting so as to ensure that the identity of the child is not revealed as it is a punishable offence," the advisory said. Amid outrage over the murder of a toddler here, authorities on Friday suspended five policemen for negligence and began proceedings to invoke the stringent NSA against the two men who allegedly killed her over a Rs 10,000 loan. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday arrested two persons in connection with the attack on villagers by members of proscribed militant outfit -- United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA).The accused are identified as Bubal Moran alias Tiger Asom and Binanda Dahotiya alias Swadesh. They are resident of Tinsukia district of the state."A case was registered against six unknown armed miscreants, suspected to be members of proscribed organisation ULFA, for the killing of five villagers of Bichanimukh Kherbari village in Tinsukia district of Assam, and causing grievous injuries to the sixth villager, outside the village last year," the investigation agency said in a statement.Both the accused were produced before a special court here on June 7, which remanded them to NIA custody for 12 days.Further investigation in the matter is underway.
A local court Friday convicted 11 persons for raping a 19-year-old woman in Dumka district on September 6, 2017. Additional District and Sessions Judge Pawan Kumar convicted the 11 accused in the case and fixed June 10 to pronounce the quantum of sentence. Two minor boys allegedly raped a 12-year-old girl in Jharkhand's Lohardaga district, police said Friday. According to the FIR filed by the father of the girl, the two boys aged 14-year and 16-year allegedly raped his daughter at Chhokta Rabanda village on Thursday, the police said here. A case has been filed against the two accused under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and and various sections of the IPC, the police said, adding that both the boys have been arrested.

A seven-year-old girl was Friday run over by a water tanker in Maharashtra's Aurangabad district, police said. Neha Gautam Dande had come from Bidar in neighbouring Karnataka along with her mother to visit relatives in Jai Bhawani Nagar area here, an official said. "She was crossing the road to buy ice-cream when the water tanker crushed her under its wheels. The driver fled from the spot and efforts are on to nab him," he added.
