The Bombay High Court Friday granted bail to actor and singer Karan Oberoi, accused of raping his former girlfriend. Oberoi was arrested on May 5 after a 34-year-old woman alleged that he raped her on several occasions and also extorted money and gifts from her. Oberoi, in his bail application, claimed they were in a consensual relationship and after he broke off the relationship, she levelled allegations of rape. Justice Revati Mohite Dere Friday granted Oberoi bail on a surety of Rs 50,000. While granting relief to Oberoi, the judge noted that the woman, on May 25, "orchestrated" a fake attack on herself and tried to make it look like she was targeted because of her complaint against the actor. The Gauhati High Court has directed the CBI to probe an alleged case of land grabbing by former Director General of Police of Assam, Khagen Sarmah. Justice S K Medhi in an order on Thursday observed that the investigation into the matter was conducted in an "unfair, partial and unethical manner by the police" and as such the CBI is ordered to conduct the probe. The order was given on two writ petitions filed by family members of late Magni Devi Jain. It was alleged in the petitions that a plot of land owned by Jain was sold in 2009 to Bandana Sarmah, wife of Khagen Sarma by fraudulent means by suspected land mafias. The petitions also claimed that pressure had been exerted by the police to vacate the property. The high court directed the government advocates to transfer all required documents and records to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) within 15-days. A case of attempt to murder has been registered against a police sub-inspector in Vadodara for allegedly firing at a man during an altercation with the latter's father, an official said Friday. The incident happened on Jun 3 in the city's Tarsali locality falling under Makaarpura police station limits when sub-inspector S V Chudasama, in civil dress, had a heated exchange with Manilal Prajapati who owns a paan stall in the area, he said. When Prajapati's son Simit tried to intervene and asked Chudasama to show his identity card, the PSI allegedly fired four rounds from his service revolver, he said. Simit received bullet injuries in his stomach and legs and was rushed to a nearby hospital while Chudasama, attached to Makaarpura police station, fled from the spot. The apex child rights body has sought an inquiry report from the senior superintendent of police of Aligarh on the alleged killing of a three-year-old girl, whose body was found in a garbage dump. National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) chairperson Priyank Kanoongo spoke to SSP Akash Kulhari on Friday and asked him to take necessary action. Kulhari informed the commission that an FIR has been registered in the matter and two suspects have been arrested. The NCPCR has asked for a fact-finding inquiry report from the SSP. On receiving the report, the commission will examine it and issue suitable directions to the district administration concerned. A joy ride on a Ferris wheel at a fair near here proved fatal for a nine-year-old girl, who fell from it, police said Friday. The incident took place Wednesday last when the girl had gone to attend the fair at the powerloom town of Bhiwandi near here in Maharashtra with family members, they said. She got onto a Ferris wheel, but fell off it and died on the spot due to serious injuries, the police said. Three persons, all brothers, who were operating the Ferris wheel, were booked under IPC section 304A (causing death by negligence) Thursday night by the Bhiwandi police, they said. The special cell of the Delhi Police Friday arrested two people, wanted in two separate cases of murder after a brief shootout at Pusta Road in Mukhmelpur, officials said. The accused were identified as Salman (24) and Nazim (23), both residents of New Seelampur. Salman and Nazim, both brothers were carrying rewards of Rs one lakh and Rs 50,000 respectively, police said. Gujarat cadre IPS officer R S Bhagora, an accused in the 2002 Bilkis Bano case, was dismissed from service by the Union Home Ministry on May 30, a day before his retirement, a senior state government official said Friday. The 60-year-old officer, who was to retire on May 31, was serving as Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) with the Ahmedabad police when his dismissal order came, said M R Soni, Deputy Secretary (Inquiry), Gujarat Home Department. "The state Home Department had received a communication from the Union Home Ministry ordering dismissal of Bhagora from service on May 29. "We had served the order on May 30, which effectively means he was sacked a day before his retirement," said Soni. As per the government records, Bhagora, a state police service officer, was promoted to the IPS cadre in 2006.
