Patel takes oath as Chief Justice of Delhi HC

Justice Dhirubhai Naranbhai Patel was sworn in as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court Friday. Lt Governor Anil Baijal administered the oath of office to Justice Patel at a function held at Raj Niwas here. Earlier, Justice Patel was posted at the Jharkhand High Court. The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended his name for the appointment as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, his deputy Manish Sisodia and cabinet colleagues, senior members of the judiciary, officers of the Delhi government and other officials were present at the ceremony. With an approved strength of 60, the Delhi High Court has a shortage of around 24 judges.

Why helmet rule not enforced in Chennai, asks HC

The Madras High Court asked why the compulsory helmet rule for both rider and pillion could not be implemented here while the same was successfully enforced in cities like Delhi and Bengaluru. "We have not seen a single pillion rider wearing helmet," a division bench of Justice S Manikumar and Justice Subramonium Prasad observed. The bench made the observation Thursday while hearing a plea moved by K K Rajendran seeking to implement the compulsory helmet rule both for rider and pillion. When the PIL came up for hearing, the court insisted that authorities must take stringent action against the violators by imposing heavy penalty and impounding the vehicles. To this, additional advocate general Aravind Pandian said as per the Motor Vehicles Act, only Rs 100 can be levied as penalty for violation of helmet rule. Aligarh minor-girl murder: Victim's mother urges PM Modi, Yogi to hang the accused

Shilpa Sharma, mother of the two-year-old Twinkle, who was brutally murdered in Aligarh, on Friday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to serve justice to her daughter by hanging the accused.The body of the girl was found in a garbage dump on Sunday. Two persons, Zahid and Aslam, have been arrested for killing the child in Tappal area of the city. Fmr Kolkata Police commissioner Rajeev Kumar deposes before CBI

Former commissioner of Kolkata Police Rajeev Kumar Friday appeared before the CBI in connection with the multi-crore Saradha scam, that left thousands of small investors in the lurch. Kumar, who is presently the additional director general of police in the CID, reached the CBI office in the morning to face questioning by the agency officials for the second time, sources in the agency said. In February, Kumar had been interrogated by CBI officials in Shillong under directions of the Supreme Court which had asked him to cooperate with the probing agency. The senior police officer was heading the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of West Bengal Police before the Central Bureau of Investigation took over the case. The premier investigative agency had last month issued a lookout notice against Kumar and directed all airports and immigration authorities to alert it if they spot him leaving the country. Dead body of a man found in a servants' quarter in South Avenue

The dead body of a 50-year old person was found in a servants' quarter at Delhi's South Avenue area, which houses residences of Members of Parliament, police said Friday. Police said the incident took place on Thursday night and stab wounds were found on the body of the deceased, police said. NRC: Centre sets ball rolling for missing persons to approach foreigners tribunals

With the final list of the NRC getting ready to be published in less than two months, the Centre has set the ball rolling for those whose names are missing to approach the foreigners tribunals. The tribunals will deliver their verdict within four months of missing persons submitting their records. Exercising its powers conferred by the Foreigners Act, 1946, the central government has issued an order saying a person whose name is not part of the National Register of Citizens, currently being updated in Assam, can approach any such tribunal with a certified copy of the rejection order received from the NRC authorities along with the grounds for appeal. The order was uploaded on the website of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Thursday night. Malegaon blast accused Pragya appears in NIA court in Mumbai

Newly elected BJP MP and 2008 Malegaon bomb blast case accused Pragya Singh Thakur Friday appeared before a special court here. It was Thakur's first appearance before the NIA court, which is conducting trial in the 11-year-old case, after being elected to Lok Sabha from Bhopal last month. Man found killed at Akola railway station

An unidentified man was found killed at the Akola railway station here in eastern Maharashtra, the Railway Police said Friday. The body of the man, who appeared to be aged 30 to 35 years, was found on platform number 4 Friday morning, they said. A person, who is said to be mentally challenged, has been arrested in connection with the incident, the police said. UP: Woman commits suicide after being thrashed by husband

A women allegedly immolated herself after being beaten by her husband in an inebriated state, police said Friday. The incident took place in Kharauli village in Kamasin area, they said. As the victim Gaura (30) was being physically assaulted, someone informed the police which reached the spot and tried to control the situation. Motorcycle collides with private bus; four killed

Four men were killed when the motorcycle they were riding on collided with a passenger bus near here in Chhattisgarh, police said Friday. The incident occurred Thursday night on a bridge near Pampshala village, under the Farsabahar police station area of Jashpur district, when the victims were returning after attending a marriage, a local police official said. Their motorcycle collided head-on with the private passenger bus ahead of the village, leaving all of them dead on the spot, he added. The deceased were identified as Sawan Sai, Pramod Sai, natives of nearby Pandripani village, and Dipak Yadav and Suresh were, who hailed from Pampshala, he said. Delhi: 2 gangsters held after brief exchange of fire
