Manoj Jarange, who was on a hunger strike to demand reservation for the Maratha community, on Thursday ended his fast on the 17th day of his protest after Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde met him and assured that the government was committed to providing quota to Marathas. CM Shinde, accompanied by some of his ministerial colleagues and other leaders, arrived in Antarwali Sarati village in Jalna district around 10.45 am. The CM met Jarange and held talks with him for some time. Around 11.15 am, Jarange ended his fast by drinking a glass of juice offered by CM Shinde. Police continued to maintain strict vigil in Pusesawali village in Maharashtra's Satara district where communal violence claimed one life, while the Internet services which have been suspended are likely to be restored by Wednesday evening, officials said. Two groups clashed in Pusesawali village on Sunday night over an "objectionable" post on social media. Rioters also set on fire some houses and vehicles, police earlier said. One person was killed and 10 others injured in the violence, they said. According to the district administration, the situation in the village is under control and police security continues to be deployed there. After the violence, Internet services were suspended in the western Maharashtra district. Asked when the Internet service will resume, district collector Jitendra Dudi said it is likely to be restored by Wednesday evening. So far, 19 people have been arrested in connection with the violence, a police official said.

As many as 685 farmers have committed suicide this year till August 31 in Maharashtra's Marathwada region, according to an official report, with the highest deaths at 186 reported from Beed, the home district of state Agriculture Minister Dhananjay Munde. The arid region in central Maharashtra consists of eight districts -- Aurangabad, Jalna, Beed, Parbhani, Nanded, Osmanabad, Hingoli and Latur. As per a report of the Divisional Commissioner's office here, 685 cultivators have ended their lives between January 1 and August 31, 2023, in the region and 294 of these deaths took place in three monsoon months alone (June to August). Marathwada is currently facing 20.7 per cent rainfall deficit. The region has so far received 455.4 mm of rainfall (till September 11) as against 574.4 mm of average monsoon showers (during period under review), an official said. IRB Infrastructure Developers Ltd (IRB) on Monday said its revenue from toll collection grew 24 per cent to Rs 417.2 crore in August 2023. Toll collection stood at Rs 336 crore in the same month last year, IRB said in a statement. Out of its 13 tolls, IRB MP Expressway in Maharashtra contributed the major share of Rs 141.1 crore to the total revenue collection, it said. On a month-on-month basis, the collection was up 14 per cent from Rs 365 crore in July 2023. Amitabh Murarka, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of IRB said, "We have added Hyderabad ORR project. The facility is strategically located in close proximity to the prime eastern suburbs of Thane and Mulund and the eastern express highway, as per the company. At least 46 out of 250 bus depots of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation have been completely shut due to protests over reservation for the Maratha community, and the MSRTC has suffered losses worth Rs 13.25 crore over the last few days, an official said. Bus operations in Ahmednagar, Aurangabad, Parbhani, Hingoli, Jalna, Nanded and Dharashiv districts have been badly hit by the protests, a spokesperson of the MSRTC told PTI on Monday. As many as 20 buses were torched and 19 were damaged amid the protests over the last few days, he said. The MSRTC has suffered losses to the tune of Rs 5.25 crore due to damages to the buses and lost Rs 8 crore in ticket sales due to protests in various parts of the state, the official said. The MSRTC is one of the biggest public transport bodies in the country, with more than 15,000 buses in its fleet. It ferries around 60 lakh passengers every day.
Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) will set up a 26-MW captive solar plant at Ahmednagar in Maharashtra. In this regard, the company said it has already signed a power delivery agreement (PDA) with Neosym Industry Limited (Neosym) which is a leading Gray & S.G. iron casting, manufacturing company. The PDA is for 26-MW AC group captive solar plant, the Tata Power arm said. The project is anticipated to generate 59 million units of electricity annually. It is expected to start from March 2024 and reduce 32,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
