A total of 7,671 people have voted in the Mizoram assembly elections through home voting and postal ballot facilities, an election official said on Thursday. Out of these, 1,998 votes have been cast through home voting and 5,673 votes were polled through postal ballots, Additional Chief Electoral Officer H Lianzela said in a statement. Polling for the 40-member assembly will be held on November 7, and the votes will be counted on December 3. Home voting facility is offered to people of 80 years and above along with persons with disability (PwD), while the postal ballots are for the polling personnel, other officials and people working in essential services. Of the 11 districts, the highest home and postal voting have been recorded in Aizawl at 1,654. It is followed by 1,114 votes in Lunglei and 1,064 votes in Lawngtlai, the statement said. Altogether 5,306 senior citizens, people with disabilities (PwDs) and government officials exercised their franchise for the November 7 Mizoram elections through home voting and postal ballots, an official statement said on Tuesday. While 1,100 senior citizens (80 years and above) and PwDs exercised their franchise through home voting, 4,203 government officials, including security and polling personnel, voted through postal ballots. In Aizawl district, 463 senior citizens and PwDs cast their votes, followed by Serchhip district (168) and Saitual district (149), the statement said. In all, 779 government officials voted in Aizawl district, 733 in Lawngtlai district and 574 in Lunglei district, it added.
Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will visit Mizoram to campaign for the November 7 assembly elections on Wednesday, a senior BJP leader said here. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday said a cross-border road under the ambitious Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMTTP) to link south Mizoram's Lawngtlai district with Myanmar's Sittwe port will be completed by November this year. Addressing a rally at West Phaileng in Dampa assembly constituency in west Mizoram's Mamit district bordering Bangladesh, Gadkari said the 26-km road project costs Rs 1,132 crore. At least 3,000 police personnel and 450 sections of central armed police forces (CAPFs) will be deployed for the November 7 Mizoram assembly polls, a senior election official said on Wednesday. Mizoram Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Madhup Vyas said the poll panel is making massive efforts to ensure a smooth, free, fair and peaceful election. "Ten companies of Border Security Force BSF) personnel and five companies each of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) have already reached Mizoram and are in their places of deployment," Vyas told reporters here.
