The company's total domestic dispatches, however, declined 2 per cent year on year to 68,482 units last month as against 70,006 units in August last year, the auto major said in a statement. Total passenger vehicle dispatches of the company in the domestic market declined 7 per cent to 41,001 units last month from 44,142 units in August 2024. Total domestic commercial vehicle sales stood at 27,481 units last month, an increase of 6 per cent as compared to 25,864 units in August last year. Shares of the company were trading 3.09 per cent up at Rs 689.45 apiece on BSE.

Supreme Court dismisses plea to mandate six airbags in passenger vehicles

The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a plea to ensure installation of six airbags in passenger vehicles and said the matter was exclusively within the policy domain. A bench comprising Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran told the petitioner to make a representation to the government. The petitioner said he had already given a representation to the government on May 17. "The prayers made in the writ petition are exclusively within the domain of policy to be framed by the executive. We are, therefore, not inclined to entertain the present petition," the bench said. If the petitioner has made a representation to the Centre, the bench said, the same would be considered on its own merits. The plea urged the court to declare non-mandating of six airbags was a violation of Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution besides seeking a direction to authorities concerned to enhance vehicle safety mechanisms. Automobile exports from India rose 22 per cent year-on-year in the April-June quarter driven by record shipment of passenger vehicles and robust growth in segments like two-wheelers and commercial vehicles, according to industry body SIAM. Total exports across segments rose to 14,57,461 units in the first quarter as compared to 11,92,566 units in April-June quarter of last financial year. Passenger vehicles saw the highest-ever exports in the first quarter at 2,04,330 units, a growth of 13 per cent compared to 1,80,483 units in the same period last year. Export growth in this segment was driven by stable demand across most markets, with strong performance in the Middle East and Latin America, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) said. Revival in neighbouring markets like Sri Lanka and Nepal, rising demand from Japan, and growing exports under FTAs such as Australia also contributed to the overall uptick, it noted.
