A bipartisan group of US lawmakers are travelling to India to participate in the Red Ford address of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15 among other things, according to an official statement. The bi-partisan Congressional delegation is led by Indian-American Congressman Ro Khanna and Congressman Michael Waltz. The two are co-chairs of the bipartisan Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans. The lawmakers will visit Red Fort where the Prime Minister will address the nation on August 15th, India's Independence Day. They will meet with business, tech, government, and Bollywood leaders in Mumbai, Hyderabad, and New Delhi and visit Raj Ghat, a historic memorial dedicated to Gandhi, the media release said. Authorities have begun a special anti-encroachment near various metro stations here as the national capital prepares to host the G20 summit in September. On Monday, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) started a comprehensive week-long drive in areas abutting Lal Quila and Chandni Chowk metro stations, officials said. The multi-agency drive in the densely populated areas involves the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, NDMC, Delhi Development Authority and Delhi Police, and will be staggered over next few days to ensure commuters do not face any hassle in accessing metro stations, they said. The drive near gate no. 1 and 2 of the Lal Quila metro station and gate no 5 of Chandni Chowk metro stations began on Monday and will be conducted daily till June 17, 2023. It has been observed that encroachments by parking of selling carts ('rehris'), vending objects, rickshaws, and other unauthorised establishments outside metro stations cause inconvenience to passengers at these locations. A fire broke out at a police post in north Delhi's Red Fort area, officials said on Wednesday. The blaze erupted inside the subway where body protectors, lathis and door-frame metal detectors were stored, they said. Four fire tenders were rushed to the spot to contain the blaze. A PCR call was received at Kotwali police station regarding the fire around 1 pm, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Sagar Singh Kalsi said. Fire tenders and a Delhi Disaster Management Authority team reached the spot soon after to control the blaze, he said. "...within an hour and a half, fire and rescue teams stifled and assuaged the fire," Kalsi said. An enquiry is being conducted to ascertain the cause of the fire, he added.
The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed the plea of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist Mohammad Arif alias Ashfaq seeking review of its judgement awarding death penalty to him in the 2000 Red Fort attack case that left three people, including two Army jawans, dead. A bench comprising Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit and Justice Bela M Trivedi said that it has accepted the prayers that electronic records be considered.
