Asiad 2023: NRAI approaches OCA to get accreditation for skeet coach

The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) is frenetically trying to get a shotgun coach on board the flight to the Asian Games in Hangzhou after an accreditation muddle, and has approached the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) to help it out. The accreditation confusion has left the skeet contingent without an expert to guide them in the continental showpiece. A source told PTI that NRAI had sought the help of acting chief of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), Randhir Singh, to get an "extra accreditation" as soon as the top-ranking official reaches Hangzhou. For now, only one shotgun coach, Vikram Chopra has got the Asian Games accreditation and can accompany the Indian squad, comprising of trap and skeet shooters. The source said that Chopra is a trap coach and might not be able to help the skeet shooters, given his area of expertise. "Randhir Singh (a former Asian Games gold medallist in shotgun himself) will be reaching Hangzhou soon and the NRAI has requested him to help the

Asiad 2023: Shooter Rudrankksh aims for consistency with Paris 2024 in mind

World champion air rifle shooter Rudrankksh Patil will be aiming for "consistency" at the upcoming Asian Games and Asian Championships, which he feels will help him in achieving the bigger goal of winning gold at next year's Paris Olympics. Rudrankksh, following his World Championship gold medal-winning performance in Cairo last year and his sublime form throughout the year, is a favourite to clinch the yellow metal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, but he said such big competitions "help us prepare and grow" as shooters for major events. Asked if the Asian Games, commencing on Saturday and the Asian Championships in Changwon (South Korea) later this year, will be a stepping stone for winning the gold in Paris, the 19-year-old told PTI, "Our main focus is on the consistency of process, to keep ourselves maintained and to grow. Sometimes we find new methods to grow... I think all that (Asian Games) is helping (prepare for the Olympics)." The Maharashtra shooter, who was not included in

Paris 2024: Shooter Rajeshwari Kumari earns India's seventh Olympic quota

Shotgun shooting runs in her family, and trap exponent Rajeshwari Kumari showed why she is among the best in the country when she earned a seventh 2024 Paris Olympic quota place by finishing fifth in the ISSF World Championship here on Thursday. The 31-year-old, daughter of legendary shotgun shooter and one of the top sports administrators the country has produced, Randhir Singh, made it to the finals in an extremely tough field but bad luck forced her to miss out on a medal. Rajeshwari also became the second trap shooter after Shagun Chowdhary to ever earn an Olympic quota in women's trap. In a heartbreak for the shooter, she could score only 19 out of 30 shots in the final. Despite the below-par score in the finals, Rajeshwari was elated at having clinched the Olympic quota. "I am feeling great. It's unbelievable. It's finally done. It's done for the country. I mean I wish I could win a medal but this is great. Paris," said Rajeshwari after the final. Gunman opens fire at Shia shrine in Iran, leaves 1 dead, 8 injured

A gunman opened fire Sunday night at a prominent shrine in southern Iran, killing one person and wounding eight others in an attack that followed another assault there months earlier, authorities said. Officials offered no immediate motive for the attack in the city of Shiraz at Shah Cheragh, which draws Shiite pilgrims to its domed mosque and the tomb of a prominent member of the faith from its earliest days. However, Iran has faced attacks in the past from the Sunni extremists of the Islamic State group, who view Shiites as heretics. Iran also faces lingering unrest and economic turmoil amid tensions with the West. Iran's state-run IRNA news agency quoted Ismail Qezelsofla, a deputy governor for security in the country's Fars province, as offering the casualty toll. Fars province Gov. Mohammad Hadi Imanieh told Iranian state television that a single gunman carried out the attack and later was detained by security forces. He did not offer any motive for the attack in his brief ...

More than 700 para shooters caught in crossfire between PCI and NRAI

More than 700 para shooters have been caught in the crossfire between the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) and the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), and are unable to decide which tournament to participate in following different sets of competition circular being issued by the respective bodies. PCI secretary general Gursharan Singh issued a warning on Saturday, saying NRAI inviting para shooters in its competitions was an "unauthorised" act. Para shooting in the country is governed by PCI, which in turn is affiliated to the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). At the international level, para shooters compete under the aegis of World Shooting Para Sport (WSPS). NRAI, on the other hand, is affiliated to the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF), which in turn is governed by International Olympic Committee (IOC). PCI was taken by surprise when the NRAI issued a series of circulars calling on para shooters to participate in the Zonal/GV Mavlankar Championsh

A man stormed a high-rise construction site in downtown Auckland early Thursday morning, shooting at terrified workers and killing two people hours before New Zealand planned to host the first game of the FIFA Women's World Cup tournament. The gunman was found dead after a police shootout, during which an officer was shot and wounded. Four civilians were also injured. The shooting happened near hotels where Team Norway and other soccer teams have been staying. New Zealand Prime Minster Chris Hipkins said the tournament would go ahead as scheduled. Clearly with the FIFA World Cup kicking off this evening, there are a lot of eyes on Auckland," Hipkins said. "The government has spoken to FIFA organisers this morning and the tournament will proceed as planned." I want to reiterate that there is no wider national security threat, he added. "This appears to be the action of one individual. The shooting jarred New Zealand, where active shooter incidents are rare, leading the country's t

Georgia suspect in 4 killings fatally shot, 2 officers hurt in exchange

Officers shot and killed a man wanted in four-weekend killings near Atlanta during an exchange of gunfire, and a sheriff's deputy and a police officer were injured trying to take the suspect into custody, authorities said. Henry County Sheriff's spokesperson Syntonnia Moore said Andre Longmore was shot during an intense manhunt for the 40-year-old man. Indian shooters likely to compete in tournament at Paris' Olympic range

A handful of Indian shooters are likely to compete in a tournament in Paris in the third week of July, hoping to gain some "advance knowledge" of lining up at the range that will host the events at next year's Olympics. The forthcoming tournament, starting July 15, will take place at the same range that will also play host to the shooting events of the 2024 Olympic Games in the French capital. While not all shooters selected for the ISSF World Championships and Hangzhou Asian Games are going to be part of this tournament, which is being organised exactly one year before the quadrennial extravaganza, quite a few of them are set to take to the Paris range in the coming days. "The team is going to be a mix of players who are in the current Indian squad for the World Championship and Asian Games and those shooters who missed out on selection now but were part of the earlier squad," a source in the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) told PTI. Over 900 people arrested in France overnight as rioters clash with police

Rioting raged in cities around France for a fourth night despite massive police deployment, with cars and buildings set ablaze and stores looted, as family and friends prepared Saturday to bury the 17-year-old whose killing by police unleashed the unrest. The government suggested the violence was beginning to lessen thanks to tougher security measures, but damages remained widespread, from Paris to Marseille and Lyon and French territories overseas, where a 54-year-old died after being hit by a stray bullet in French Guiana. The interior ministry announced 994 arrests around France by early Saturday. France's national soccer team including international star Kylian Mbappe, an idol to many young people in the disadvantaged neighbourhoods where the anger is rooted pleaded for an end to the violence. Many of us are from working-class neighbourhoods, we too share this feeling of pain and sadness over the killing of 17-year-old Nahel, the players said in a statement. Violence resolves
