DeChambeau wins Dell Technologies, Woods finishes T-24th

Bryson DeChambeau, the 24-year-old physics major, shot four-under 67 in the fourth round, which included three straight birdies, to win his second successive FedExCup Play-off event at the Dell Technologies Championship here. After winning the Northern Trust golf tournament by four shots last week, this win has brightened his chances of winning the FedExCup itself. En route his two-shot victory at the TPC Boston on Monday, DeChambeau became only the second player in 12 years to win the opening two Playoffs events. Vijay Singh achieved the feat in 2008. DeChambeau finished at 16-under 268 and earned USD 1,620,000 for the second straight week. Justin Rose birdied three of his last four holes for a 68 and wound up alone in second. Tiger Woods closed with a 71 and finished tied 24th. Woods is now 25th on FedExCup list. The 42-year-old is still not certain of a guaranteed place in Tour Championships for Top-30. Black night as Federer, Sharapova crash at US Open

Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova crashed out of the US Open on Monday in back-to-back seismic shocks under the Arthur Ashe Stadium lights. Federer, the five-time champion and looking to end his 10-year wait to add to his total in New York, was beaten by Australia's world number 55 John Millman 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (9/7), 7-6 (7/3). It was 20-time major winner Federer's first loss against a player outside the top 50 in 41 meetings at the US Open. He finished with 77 unforced errors and 10 double faults. "It was very hot. I felt I couldn't get any air and I was sweating more and more and became more and more uncomfortable," explained Federer. "I guess I was happy when the match was over." He added: "John dealt with it better -- he's from Brisbane, one of the most humid places in the world!" It was the world number two's earliest defeat at the tournament since a fourth round loss to Tommy Robredo in 2013. The result meant there would be no quarter-final showdown with old rival Novak Djokovic ..

Mitharwal strikes gold; Manu Bhaker, Heena Sidhu fail to make final at World C'ships

Indian shooter Om Prakash Mitharwal picked up his maiden gold medal at the ISSF World Championships, claiming the top honours in the 50m pistol event here Tuesday. The 23-year-old, a bronze-winner in the 10m air pistol and the 50m pistol events of the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast earlier this year, shot a score of 564 to finish on top here. The silver was won by Serbia's Damir Mikec (562), while the bronze went to local favourite Daemyung Lee (560). The seasoned Jitu Rai, who won a silver medal in the 2014 edition of the tournament, endured disappointment as he finished 17th in the field with a below-par score of 552. The ongoing championship is the first qualifying event for the 2020 Olympics but since 50m pistol is no longer a part of the Games roster, there were no quota places to be sealed. The International Shooting Sport Federation's (ISSF) premier tournament is offering as many as 60 berths across 15 events. In the team competition of the same category, Mitharwal, Rai and ..

Series win over India on par with Ashes triumph: Bayliss

The victory against world no 1 India in the ongoing five-Test series is on par with beating Australia in the Ashes, said England coach Trevor Bayliss, who suggested they might experiment in the final match starting at London on Friday. "It is right up there with beating Australia in the Ashes. Obviously India are a very good team, the number one team, and to knock them off is a very good feeling," said Bayliss after England sealed the series with a 60-run win in the fourth Test. "There were some difficult conditions especially on day one. We have said before, under a bit of pressure these guys have got a bit of character which is a good sign going forward." With opener Alastair Cook announcing his retirement after this series, and skipper Joe Root eagar to bat at number four, England will have to figure out their top-order in the final Test as well as in the upcoming series against Sri Lanka and West Indies. Moeen Ali was promoted to the number 3 spot in the second innings of the ...

Five-time champion Federer knocked out of US Open by Aussie Millman

Five-time champion Roger Federer crashed out of the US Open on Monday, beaten in four sets by 55th-ranked Australian John Millman. Millman's 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (9/7), 7-6 (7/3) victory in his first Grand Slam fourth round match scuppered a blockbuster quarter-final between Federer and two-time winner Novak Djokovic. It marked Federer's earliest US Open exit since he fell in straight sets to Tommy Robredo in the fourth round in 2013. Federer had set points in both the second and third sets, but troubles with his serve infected his entire game and 77 unforced errors doomed the 20-time Grand Slam champion in the face of a determined attack from Millman. "I'm probably in a little bit of disbelief," Millman, 29, said after three hours and 35 minutes in the cauldron of Arthur Ashe Stadium. "I have so much respect for Roger and everything he's done for the game. He's been a hero of mine." Federer took the opening set courtesy of a break in Millman's first service game. But Federer's first service

Mickelson eyes 'most special' Ryder Cup

Phil Mickelson believes this month's Ryder Cup could be the most special of his career if he is handed a 12th cap by USA captain Jim Furyk on Tuesday. Mickelson boosted his goal of competing in France later this month after posting closing rounds of 67 and 63 for an eventual 10-under-par total at the PGA Dell Technologies Championship on Monday. The 48-year-old's closing 63 could not have come at a better time for Mickelson, with Furyk set to announce three of his four captain's picks on Tuesday. Mickelson is widely expected to earn one of the available slots and is eager for the chance of ending the USA's 25-year wait to claim a Ryder Cup on European soil. "This one has an opportunity to be my favourite and most special," Mickelson said Tuesday. "We've never won over there. I feel like we have the team. I feel like we have the leadership and we have the direction. We have the game plan that will allow us to play our best. "If I'd be lucky enough to get on the team and go over there ..

German FA boss Grindel confident Ozil affair doesn't threaten Euro 2024 bid

The under-pressure president of the German Football Association (DFB), Reinhard Grindel, has told AFP he is confident the controversy over Mesut Ozil's international retirement will not have a negative impact on Germany's bid to host Euro 2024. Ozil, capped 92 times, walked away from the Germany set-up in the wake of their disastrous World Cup campaign, complaining of facing "racism and disrespect" and being made a scapegoat for the team's failure. That was after Ozil and teammate Ilkay Gundogan, born in Germany but of Turkish origin, sparked a political storm in May by meeting Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and being photographed together. Arsenal star Ozil took aim at Grindel in a statement announcing his retirement, saying that "in the eyes of Grindel and his supporters, I am German when we win, but I am an immigrant when we lose". The DFB chief has vehemently rejected accusations against him of racism, and has dismissed calls to resign over the issue. In July, Germany's ..

Djokovic books US Open quarter-final with Federer possible foe

Novak Djokovic did his part to set up a blockbuster quarter-final clash with Roger Federer at the US Open on Monday with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 victory over unseeded Joao Sousa. Djokovic, who ended a 54-week title drought with his 13th Grand Slam crown at Wimbledon, will play the winner of a night match between five-time US Open champion Federer and John Millman. Should 20-time major winner Federer get through against the 55th-ranked Australian, he'll set up his earliest Grand Slam meeting with Djokovic since 2007, when Federer beat the Serb star to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals. Djokovic, whose 3-3 record against Federer at Flushing Meadows includes victories over the Swiss great in the 2011 and 2015 finals, said he was relieved to get past 68th-ranked Sousa in straight sets as temperatures soared again. "Very happy to get this one done in straight sets," said Djokovic, who left the court for a lengthy toilet break after the second set and departed again for evaluation during a ..

Sharapova crashes at US Open to birthday girl Suarez Navarro

Maria Sharapova was knocked out of the US Open in the fourth round on Monday, losing 6-4, 6-3 to Spanish birthday girl Carla Suarez Navarro who inflicted the Russian's first ever night-time loss at the tournament. Sharapova, the 2006 champion who was trying to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2012, hit 38 unforced errors and dropped serve six times. The defeat ended the former world number one's perfect record of 23 wins -- 22 of them on Arthur Ashe Stadium -- in night sessions at Flushing Meadows. Suarez Navarro, who celebrated her 30th birthday Monday, was a quarter-finalist in New York in 2013. "Maria has played here at night many times so I knew I needed to be aggressive, focussed and play solid," said the 30th seeded Spaniard after clinching a second win in six meetings with Sharapova. "I told myself to run and fight -- that's the way I can play really good tennis." She will face 2017 runner-up Madison Keys for a place in the semi-finals. "Madison is from the ...
