Jwala Singh, Director and Organising Secretary of the 8th season of Mitsui Shoji T20 League, said it will be a five -team affair, which will begin from April 23 and the first game will be played at the Mumbai Police Gymkhana. While 45-year-old Vaas, who has played a staggering 111 Tests and 322 ODIs, has been a regular visitor here, 41- year-old Herath, one of the greatest left-arm spinners of his times, has accepted the invitation of the organisers for the opening ceremony. Indian boxers were off to a good start in the Asian Championships claiming two pre-quarterfinals berths in the opening session of the continental showpiece here Friday. National champion Deepak (49kg) and Rohit Tokas (64kg) advanced to the last-16 stage with confident victories. Deepak defeated Vietnam's Loi Bui Cong Danh, fetching a unanimous verdict from the judges before Rohit put it past Taiwan's Chu-Yen Lai with a similar scoreline. Deepak kept it simple and focussed on hitting straight to ensure clean and impactful punches. Danh wasn't particularly a pushover but lacked power in his attacks, not to mention the poor precision. Rohit Tokas (64kg) was up against a more aggressive one in Lai but he hardly broke a sweat to advance. The Indian, a winner of three King's Cup bronze medals here, literally toyed with his rival, who seemed under-prepared for bout. Lai was cautioned several times for failing to keep his head up. He went for the jugular in the last three minutes but Rohit ...

India's Test deputy Ajinkya Rahane has asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to grant him permission to play county cricket for Hampshire in the months of May, June and mid-July. An application seeking permission has been sent by the batsman to the board and the same has been forwarded to the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administration (CoA).
The BCCI's announcement of the 15-member India team for the forthcoming cricket World Cup in England and Wales has received a mixed reaction. The ones who gave it a thumbs-up were people who had already formed their opinion even before the selection. The common thread amongst them was that 90 per cent of the team had already established themselves and the question was to fill two insignificant spots, that too, if the need arose.
Punjab made it through to their 15th Santosh Trophy final on Friday at the Guru Nanak Stadium in Ludhiana, beating traditional rivals Goa by a 2-1 margin. Harjinder Singh scored the winning goal on this occasion to put the home side into the final. Punjab started off the match with great gutso plunging into the attack from the word go. The home side was heavily reliant on its wide players Sunny and Jaspreet Singh. Both the wide players toiled hard to generate swift attacks, aiming the ball at the heavily-marked striker Vikrant Singh. However, it was Jaspreet, who sneaked into the box from the right, and nodded in a cross from the left flank to put Punjab in the lead in the 12th minute. The Goans were shell-shocked, but they picked up the pace soon. Their striker Lallawmpuia dropped deep to get more involved in the build-up play, which helped them gain more possession over the ball. A foul near the Punjab penalty area towards the end of the first half gave the Goans the perfect ...

Hardik Pandya has already emulated M S Dhoni's signature helicopter shot and the Mumbai Indians all-rounder says the veteran keeper-batsman liked his version of the innovative stroke. Pandya has looked in ominous form this IPL, scoring 218 runs at a strike rate of 194.64 in nine matches. He used the shot to good effect against speedster Kagiso Rabada in their game against Delhi Capital Thursday night. The 25-year-old smashed 32 off 15 balls to power Mumbai Indians to 168 for five, a total which Delhi Capitals found too stiff to chase, going down by 40 runs. His inning comprised two boundaries and three massive sixes, including the helicopter shot -- a stroke made famous by Dhoni. It was in the second ball of the 20th over when Hardik had played that shot, sending a Rabada delivery across the ropes between long-on and deep mid-wicket position. The all-rounder had played the helicopter shot in front of Dhoni during a game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), which Mumbai won by 37 runs at
