Insect Arm inspired drones invented using in-flight adjustments technology

Researchers have developed a drone with 'movable-arm technology'. It is inspired by the wings and flight patterns of insects. The new technology enables the drones to function in windy conditions along with making it more energy efficient. The details about the technology is published in the Journal - Dynamic Systems, Measurement, and Control.Drones are used to assist in end number of functions, such as disaster relief, surveillance and spying, mineral exploration, geological surveying, agriculture, archaeology. Several other industries too use drones to achieve accurateness."Our drone design was inspired by the wings and flight patterns of insects. We created a drone design with automatic folding arms that can make in-flight adjustments." said Xiumin Diao. Diao worked with the Purdue Office of Technology Commercialization to patent his device. They are looking for additional researchers and partners to license the technology.Diao said the design provides drones with improved stability

Deepest radio images of Sun created

Scientists have captured the deepest radio images of the Sun, an advance that may help reliably predict space weather and its possible effects on Earth. The Sun is probably the most studied celestial object, but it still hosts mysteries that scientists have been trying to unravel for decades, for example, the origin of coronal mass ejections which can potentially affect the Earth. A team of scientists at the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA) in Pune, Maharashtra have been leading an international group of researchers to understand some of these mysteries. "The sun is a surprisingly challenging radio source to study. Its emission can change within a second and can be very different, even across nearby frequencies," said Divya Oberoi, from NCRA, who led the study published in the Astrophysical Journal. "In addition, the radiation due to the magnetic fields is so weak that it is like looking for the feeble light from a candle in the beam of a powerful headlight," Oberoi ...

Small-scale desalination made easy with solar evaporators

In recent research, engineers have successfully prototyped an inexpensive solar evaporator, made of wood, for affordable small-scale desalination.According to the study published in Advanced Materials, the evaporator generates steam with high efficiency and minimal need for maintenance.About a billion people around the world lack access to safe drinking water. Desalinating salty water into drinkable water can help to fill this dangerous gap. But traditional desalination systems are far too expensive to install and operate in many locations, especially in low-income countries and remote areas. The design employs a technique known as interfacial evaporation, "which shows great potential in response to global water scarcity because of its high solar-to-vapour efficiency, low environmental impact, and portable device design with low cost. These features make it suitable for off-grid water generation and purification, especially for low-income countries," said Liangbing Hu, senior author of

Govt asks Google, Apple to comply with court order prohibiting TikTok download

The government has asked tech giants Google and Apple to comply with the Madras High Court's order that had banned popular mobile app TikTok, according to sources. Sources said instructions in this regard were sent to the two American companies on Monday after the Supreme Court refused to stay the April 3 order of Madras High Cout that had directed the Centre to ban Tiktok app over concerns about access to pornographic content through it. E-mails sent to Apple and Google did not elicit a response. On Monday, the Supreme Court said the ban directive was just an interim order and that the high court is scheduled to hear the matter on April 16. In its April 3 order, the Madras HC said it was evident from media reports that pornography and inappropriate content were made available through such mobile applications. It had also directed the media not to telecast video clips made with TikTok. The app, which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance, allows users to create short videos and then ..

New way to create fast-charging lithium-ion batteries discovered

Scientists, including one of Indian origin, have developed a way to make lithium-ion battery that can charge within minutes but still operate at a high capacity, an advance that may improve performance for smartphones and electric vehicles. A lithium-ion battery charges and discharges as lithium ions move between two electrodes, called an anode and a cathode. In a traditional lithium-ion battery, the anode is made of graphite, while the cathode is composed of lithium cobalt oxide. These materials perform well together, which is why lithium-ion batteries have become increasingly popular, but researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the US believe the function can be enhanced further. "The way to make batteries better is to improve the materials used for the electrodes," said Nikhil Koratkar, a professor at Rensselaer. "What we are trying to do is make lithium-ion technology even better in performance," Koratkar said in a statement. The team improved battery performance by ...

'Insect-inspired drone can fly in windy conditions'

Scientists have come up with a patented design for drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles, that works in windy conditions, is more energy efficient and can handle a larger payload. Most drones are not able to withstand wind because of their fixed-arm design, according to the study published in the ASME Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement and Control. "Our drone design was inspired by the wings and flight patterns of insects," said Xiumin Diao, an assistant professor at Purdue University in the US. "We created a drone design with automatic folding arms that can make in-flight adjustments," Diao said in a statement. He said the design provides drones with improved stability in windy conditions because the folding arms can move and change the centre of gravity of the device during flight. Diao said the design also makes drones more energy efficient because the movable-arm technology allows for the use of the full range of rotor thrust. "The drones on the market now have fixed arms and ..
