Novel device creates electricity from snowfall

Scientists have designed a first-of-its-kind 3D-printed device that can produce electricity from falling snow. The device designed by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the US is inexpensive, small, thin and flexible like a sheet of plastic. "The device can work in remote areas because it provides its own power and does not need batteries," said UCLA's Richard Kaner, senior author of the research published in the journal Nano Energy. "It's a very clever device -- a weather station that can tell you how much snow is falling, the direction the snow is falling, and the direction and speed of the wind," Kaner said in a statement. The device called snow-based triboelectric nanogenerator, or snow TENG, generates charge through static electricity, produces energy from the exchange of electrons. "Static electricity occurs from the interaction of one material that captures electrons and another that gives up electrons," said Kaner. "You separate the charges and

Meteoroid strikes eject precious water from Moon: NASA

Meteoroids showers cause the Moon to lose precious water from under the lunar surface, hampering a potential resource for sustaining long term human exploration of deep space, according to NASA. Models had predicted that meteoroid impacts could release water from the Moon as a vapour, but scientists had not yet observed the phenomenon. Researchers from NASA and the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in the US found dozens of these events in data collected by NASA's Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE). LADEE was a robotic mission that orbited the Moon to gather detailed information about the structure and composition of the thin lunar atmosphere, and determine whether dust is lofted into the lunar sky. "We traced most of these events to known meteoroid streams, but the really surprising part is that we also found evidence of four meteoroid streams that were previously undiscovered," said Mehdi Benna of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in the US, ...

Meteor showers depriving Moon of precious water: NASA

As billions of people on Earth stare at an imminent water shortage, precious, ancient water is being released into the lunar atmosphere by meteor showers from the Moon that can hamper future long-term exploration on the lunar surface.

NASA study finds meteor showers eject water on Moon

Providing a potential resource for future explorations, NASA on Monday revealed that water is released on the Moon during meteor showers. The data leading up to this landmark finding was collected through the space agency's Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) - a robotic mission which orbited the Moon from October 2013 to April 2014, to gather information about the Moon's exosphere."The Moon doesn't have significant amounts of H2O or OH in its atmosphere most of the time," Richard Elphic, the LADEE project scientist at NASA's Ames Research Center in California's Silicon Valley said."But when the Moon passed through one of these meteoroid streams, enough vapour was ejected for us to detect it. And then, when the event was over, the H2O or OH went away," a NASA press release quoted him as saying. The findings of the study, spearheaded by Mehdi Benna of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center here, are published in Nature Geosciences.According to NASA, the revelations give ...

Internet Explorer bug allows hackers to steal data even if browser is not in use

A security researcher has discovered a vulnerability in Microsoft's Internet Explorer which allows hackers to potentially steal user data even if they don't use the browser.Security researcher John Page explained that the browser is vulnerable to XML External Entity attack if a user opens something malicious. MHT file locally, allowing hackers to remotely access the computer and exfiltrate local files. The file format is used by Internet Explorer for its web archives and a user only needs to open the malicious attachment received either by email, messenger, or any other file transfer service, Mashable reports.Once a user opens the malicious file, it launches the browser. Afterwards, even if the commands such as 'Ctrl+K' for tab duplication, 'Print Preview', or 'Print' are used on the webpage, it may trigger the XXE vulnerability.Typically, Internet Explorer alerts users with a security bar if one tries to access objects like 'Microsoft.XMLHTTP'. However, with the specially crafted. MHT

Google reports surge in police requests on mobile location data

As technology becomes indispensable and more data is put out on the web, law enforcement agencies have also started to first see smartphones and web activity to gather evidence.Companies including Google are often at the crossroads choosing between user privacy and law when it comes to revealing data on users for legal purposes. Investigators have been using Google to find suspects and witnesses near crimes, and now the numbers have surged, Engadget reports.Law enforcement requests for information from Google's mobile Location History database, known as Sensorvault, have increased sharply in the last six months, with as many as 180 requests coming in a single week. Many of these requests come from the 'geofence' warrants which require Google to hand over location info for every device that passed through a given area over a specific time period. At first, the data is anonymised. However, if the information matches the behaviour of a suspect or witness, Google has to provide related ...

24/7 news, social media reducing our attention span: Study

The 'fear of missing out', keeping up to date on social media, and 24/7 cycle of breaking news is narrowing our collective attention span, a study has warned. The research, published in the journal Nature Communications, showed this effect occurs not only on social media but also across diverse domains including books, web searches, movie popularity, and internet trends. The negative effects of social media and a hectic news cycle on our attention span has been an on-going discussion in recent years -- but there has been a lack of empirical data supporting claims of a 'social acceleration'. Sociologists and psychologists have warned of an emerging crisis stemming from FOMO -- or the 'fear of missing out' -- keeping up to date on social media, and breaking news coming at us 24/7. Researchers including those from Technische Universitat Berlin, Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Germany found empirical evidence regarding one dimension of social acceleration, namely the ...
