A traffic accident in southern Afghanistan left at least 21 people dead and 38 others injured, according to a provincial traffic department. The accident occurred on Sunday morning in Gerashk district of Helmand province on the main highway between southern Kandahar and western Herat provinces, a statement from the department in Helmand said. A motorbike crashed into a passenger bus, which then hit a fuel tanker on the opposite side of the road, said Qadratullah, a traffic official in Helmand. An investigation into the accident was underway, he added. Eleven of the 38 injured people were transferred to hospitals with serious injuries, said Hzatullah Haqqani, a spokesman for the Helmand police chief. Traffic accidents are common in Afghanistan, mainly due to poor road conditions and driver carelessness.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Sunday inaugurated three road overbridges in Lakhimpur Kheri through video-conferencing and said this will ease traffic congestion and add to the convenience of people. These overbridges have been built at Chhouch crossing, LRP crossing and Rajapur crossing on the Pilibhit-Basti national highway at a cost of Rs 297 crore. Fatal accidents in the national capital were reduced by 15 per cent in January this year compared to the same month in 2023, officials said on Saturday. Measures to check the accidents, including spatial analysis of accident spots, has resulted in a reduction in both daytime and night-time crashes, an official statement released by Delhi Traffic Police stated. According to the official data, a total of 97 fatal accidents were reported this January, while the number was 114 last January. The city reported 322 "simple accidents" in January this year and 313 in the same month last year. In 2024, a total of 99 people died in the accidents and 394 got injured this year. The number of persons who lost their lives and got injured were 116 and 423 respectively in January 2023, the data showed. Data from January 2024 compared to the same month in the previous year also showed a decrease in non-injury and "simple crashes" by 36.4 per cent and 2.9 per cent respectively. Road traffic injurie

As per the report, Bhiwandi in Maharashtra, Kolkata, and Bihar's Arrah are among the 10 slowest cities in the world on the speed index. The study, conducted by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), covered over 1,200 cities in 152 countries.
