Tipra Motha's demand of Greater Tipraland not possible: CM Manik Saha

Asserting that fulfilling the demand of Greater Tipraland by the Tipra Motha will not be possible, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said the opposition party was trying to create division between tribals and non-tribals in the state. Addressing the BJP's 'Vijay Sankalp' rally in South Tripura's Belonia on Saturday, he claimed that Tipra Motha was trying to fish in troubled waters in the upcoming assembly elections. "What is the boundary of Greater Tipraland? I heard that its proposed boundary passes through not only Assam and Mizoram but also neighbouring Bangladesh. Will they accept the proposal of Greater Tipraland? It is not possible," he said. Accusing the Tipra Motha of trying to create a division between people, Saha said the state has a tradition of good relations between tribals and non-tribals. Elections to the 60-member Tripura assembly will be held on February 16, and the counting of votes will be on March 2. Saha claimed that the Centre is focusing on the development

Tripura polls: Left releases manifesto, promises 250,000 new jobs

The opposition CPI(M)-led Left Front in Tripura on Friday unveiled its manifesto for the assembly polls, promising 2.5 lakh new jobs, pension to poor senior citizens, and reintroduction of the old pension scheme and two DA hikes for government employees every year if it is voted to power. In the 15-page manifesto, it also promised the reinstatement of 10,323 retrenched teachers, regularisation of services of contractual employees and more autonomy to the tribal council. Addressing a press conference, Left Front convener Narayan Kar alleged that democracy was throttled in Tripura after the BJP came to power in 2018. "Voting rights of people have been snatched away under the BJP-IPFT regime, while people's liberty to raise their voice has been lost. The Left Front will restore the democratic values once it wins the elections," he said. "We will create 2.5 lakh jobs during the next five years if the Left Front secures the blessing of the people," he said, adding that contractual ...

BJP releases list of 54 candidates for Tripura Assembly elections on Feb 16

The BJP on Saturday announced the names of its 54 candidates for the February 16 Tripura Assembly polls, fielding Chief Minister Manik Saha from Town Bordowali and Union minister Pratima Bhoumik from Dhanpur again. Party leaders Anil Baluni and Sambit Patra named 48 candidates at a press conference at the BJP headquarters here and another list of six more was released later. The seats included some where the party's ally and tribal outfit Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) had contested last time. In Agartala, Chief Minister Manik Saha announced the seat-sharing deal with IPFT which has been allocated five constituencies, four less than what it got in the 2018 polls. Saha told a press conference that the BJP will contest in 55 constituencies. The IPF's power has considerably waned with the rise of TIPRA Motha - a regional party founded by former Congress leader and royal scion Pradyot Deb Barman. The BJP had reached out to the TIPRA leadership for a tie-up but the regiona

Poll official suspended for 'defacing' PM Modi's photo in Tripura

A sector officer of Sabroom assembly constituency in poll-bound Tripura has been suspended for allegedly "defacing" a poster of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a drive to remove hoardings and banners from public places, an official said. The action was taken a day after the ruling BJP had urged the Election Commission to take steps against poll officials who defaced PM Modi's photograph in banners and hoardings put up in public places in the state, instead of removing them. It appears that the sector officer went beyond the model code of conduct and applied black colour on a poster inside a private shop. Therefore, it is decided that the officer shall be put under suspension and disciplinary proceedings shall be initiated against him as per the relevant rules, Additional Chief Electoral Officer UJ Mog said in a letter to the district magistrate of South Tripura on Tuesday. State Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath said the Election Commission has taken the acti

TMC will not join CPM-Cong alliance in Tripura, Mamata to visit on Feb 6

The Trinamool Congress will not join the CPI(M)-Congress alliance in the ensuing Tripura Assembly election, a senior party leader said on Sunday. Tripura Trinamool Congress president Pijush Kanti Biswas said TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister will arrive in Tripura on February 6 to campaign for party candidates. "The TMC is not going to forge any electoral understanding with the CPI(M)-Congress combine in the ensuing Tripura Assembly elections because many Congress leaders and workers who had suffered during Communist regime will not vote for their own party", said Biwas. "Our assessment is that the CPI(M)-Congress initiative will face the similar fate what had happened in West Bengal Assembly election in 2021, that's why we will keep our distance from it", he said. Biswas said "Trinamool Congress will contest the election in the seats where the party has a chance to win and TMC's doors are open for other parties for electoral understanding." He said Trinamool Congress sup
