14 civilians killed in jihadist attack in Burkina Faso: army

Fourteen civilians were killed in a jihadist attack in northern Burkina Faso near the Mali border, the military has said. The army conducted raids in three northern provinces in response and said it had "neutralised" 146 militants, according to a report that AFP could not immediately confirm from an independent source. The jihadist attack, which took place in the town of Kain in the Yatenta province bordering Mali, is one of the most serious recorded in the country. Army spokesman Colonel Lamoussa Fofana said in a statement: "On the night of Sunday 3 to Monday, February 4, 2019 a terrorist attack in Kain left 14 civilian victims. "In response to this attack, the national defence and security forces immediately began operations in the Kain, Banh (Loroum Province, north) and Bomboro (Kossi Province, northwest) areas. "This counterattack... resulted in a land and air operation which neutralised 146 terrorists in the three areas," the statement said on Monday. A military source confirmed .

Palestinian killed, one wounded by Israeli fire in West Bank

A Palestinian was shot dead and another wounded in a clash at a military checkpoint in the northern West Bank, Palestinian officials said, without giving further details. The Israeli army said its troops fired at "two assailants who hurled an explosive device" on Monday in the vicinity of the checkpoint, near Jenin, but it did not confirm if either were hit. It said no soldiers were hurt. The Palestinian health ministry named the dead man as Abdullah Tawalba, 19, and said in a statement that he was "hit by live bullets" and died in the Jenin hospital. It called him a "martyr" - a term used to describe those killed while carrying out attacks. Officials at the hospital had earlier said his name was Abdallah Abu Talib, aged 20, and said he was killed in the Jalameh incident. Both sources said a second man was injured moderately.

Bomb explosion kills 10 in Somalia

10 people lost their lives while dozens were injured after a car bomb exploded at a crowded mall in the business district of Hamarweyne here on Monday.Terrorist group Al-Shabaab, which is affiliated to Al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility for the heinous attack."The explosion rattled windows of nearby buildings," CNN quoted a witness as saying.The death toll is expected to rise as search and rescue efforts continue. Meanwhile, a few of the victims, who are receiving medical attention have been grievously injured.The terror group has previously staged attacks which killed 52 people and injured a 100 in November last year, amongst other strikes.This is the group's second attack in 2019. 21 people lost their lives when members belonging to the terrorist outfit laid siege at the DusitD2 compound in Nairobi.

Eastern Army Commander reviews security situation in Nagaland

The Eastern Army Commander Lt Gen M M Naravane reviewed the security situation and operational preparedness of the security forces and Assam Rifles in Nagaland, Defence sources said on Monday. The General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Eastern Command was a two-day official visit to Nagaland since Sunday, Defence PRO Col C Konwer said here. Iraqi president slams Trump's remarks about staying in Iraq

Iraq's president has slammed comments by US President Donald Trump who, he says, wants to keep US troops in Iraq "to watch Iran." Barham Salih says Trump did not ask Iraq's permission for American troops stationed there to watch Iran, describing his comments as "strange." Salih spoke Monday at a forum in Baghdad and was responding to Trump's comments to U.S. media in which he said the U.S. has an "incredible base" in Iraq which he intends to keep "because I want to be able to watch Iran." Salih says U.S. troops in Iraq were there for one purpose only which is assisting in the fight against IS. He says Iraq's constitution forbids the use of Iraq as a base to threaten the interests or security of neighboring countries.

Philippine police: 5 church bombing suspects in custody

Five suspected Abu Sayyaf militants accused of involvement in a deadly suicide attack at a Roman Catholic cathedral in the southern Philippines have surrendered to authorities, the national police chief said Monday amid renewed terrorism fears. Complaints for murder and attempted murder were filed against the five, as well as several other suspected Abu Sayyaf fighters who remain at large, for their alleged role in the Jan. 27 attack at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cathedral in Sulu province's Jolo town which killed 23 people and wounded nearly 100 others. Before the bombing, the detained suspects escorted two Indonesians thought to have carried out the suicide attack around Jolo and to a meeting with an Abu Sayyaf commander, Hatib Hajan Sawadjaan, who has been accused of planning and funding the attack, police Director-General Oscar Albayalde said. CRPF centre attack in J-K: NIA arrests JeM terrorist for providing logistics

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) Monday arrested a Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorist in connection with the attack on a CRPF camp in Jammu and Kashmir's Lethpora, according to an official statement. The accused, Fayaz Ahmad Magray, is an active OGW (over ground worker) of proscribed terrorist organisation Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), it said. He is a key conspirator who provided logistical support such as providing shelter to the terrorists and conducting reconnaissance of the CRPF group centre in Lethpora before the terrorist attack, the NIA said in the statement. Gen Rawat reviews preparedness of Indian Army along LAC

191 Kashmiri youths joined militancy in 2018: Official

As many as 191 local youths joined various militant outfits in Jammu and Kashmir in 2018, 65 more than 2017, a senor Army official said Monday. The new recruits mostly hailed from the restive south Kashmir region, he added. "As many as 191 Kashmiri youths joined militancy in 2018," the official told PTI. In 2017, 126 locals had joined militant ranks, he said. South Kashmir districts -- Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam and Anantnag -- have become a breeding ground for militants with many youths joining their rank and file, the officer said. Maha govt to give 10 pc quota to EWS in jobs, education

Ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, the Maharashtra government has decided to grant 10 per cent reservation in jobs and education to those who are economically weak in the state. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis tweeted a graphic that said families, whose collective annual income is less than Rs 8 lakh -- through sources such as farming, salaries, business-industry -- would be treated as economically backward in this case. "#Maharashtra Cabinet 10 per cent reservation for the economically poor in Maharashtra," Fadnavis said on Twitter. The state government's decision is in line with the Centre's recent move of granting 10 per cent quota to the financially weak from general category, Maharashtra Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar said. Iraqi politicians on Monday hit back at Donald Trump after the US president said he plans to keep American forces in the country to spy on Iran.
