Wartsila bets big on its product for 24/7 power

BS Reporter Chennai/ Hyderabad

With load shedding being the most favoured tool of power utilities for managing peak loads, Wartsila India, a part of Euro 4.6 billion Finnish global power solutions company, is betting big on its modular DG sets with a capacity ranging 50-60 Mw that ensures 24/7 power supply.

“This way more capacity will be added to the grid as more number of entrepreneurs come into the picture,” Rakesh Sarin, managing director, Wartsila India, said here today.

By operating 6-8 hours during the peak load period, these ‘flexible base load and peaking plants’ will remove the necessity of part load operation of thermal and gas-based power plants in off-peak hours and provide peak power at a slightly higher tariff.

A separate regulation on peak tariff being considered by the Centre will create enabling mechanism to encourage this trend, according to Sarin.

About 25 per cent of the 3,500 Mw capacity provided by the company is held by the power utilities while the rest is set up as captive units by industries and independent power producers.
