Cpi(Ml) Flays Move To Allow Foreign N-Plants

BSCAL

The Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) yesterday denounced the governments reported proposal to have fully foreign-owned nuclear power plants in the country. With this announcement, the government has shed the last pretense of safeguarding self-reliance in sectors of strategic importance. If foreign-owned nuclear power plants become a reality, India would have the freedom to choose between having another Bhopal or her own Chernobyls, the partys politburo said in a statement here.

The party has also taken strong exception to the Prime Ministers action in disclosing the governments decision in this regard to a Japanese business daily, before sharing it with the Indian parliament or people.

Meanwhile, the partys politburo member, Swadesh Bhattacharya has expressed deep concern over the recent lifting of import curbs on a whole range of consumer items.

Such a blatant encouragement of elitist profligacy can only aggravate the persistent balance of payment crisis, Bhattacharya said.

Calling upon the CPI and CPM to take a fresh look at their continuing participation in the United Front, he said the anti-BJP consensus is patently being stretched beyond all limits only to accelerate the sell-out of our vital national interests in the fiftieth year of Independence.
