The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday announced former television actor and Rajya Sabha MP Smriti Irani as its candidate from Amethi. It has fielded Supreme Court advocate Ajay Agarwal as its Rae Bareli candidate.
In a decision made late evening, the party decided to field Irani against Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi in Amethi.
The party decided against naming senior leader Uma Bharti against Congress President Sonia Gandhi from Rae Bareli as had been suggested by yoga guru Baba Ramdev. Bharti remains the party's candidate from Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh.
Bharti was unwilling to quit her candidature from Jhansi to contest from Rae Bareli, and at worst willing to contest from both the seats.
Accusing the UPA government of mismanaging the economy, Irani claimed that Narendra Modi would bring it back on track after the NDA government comes to power at the Centre.
